These guys are from the West Island of Montreal, where I was raised, so they can do no wrong. The High Dials, originally The Datson Four, were re-christened backstage by Little Steven (E Street Band) when they discovered there was already a Kiwi band named The Datsuns.
By the way they weren't only re-christened they were also blessed... by the Almighty God of POP (i don't mean little steven, i mean... uuh, i don't know what i mean... ya know what i mean?) .

john vanderslice: LIVE July 2, 2004
John is at it again. Mr. Vanderslice has once again bestowed a kindness upon us all by posting a live set on his site. There are many great songs to discover there, not just his own work, but links to music by friends and artists he admires from afar.
This is an example from a July 2nd performance in Iowa City.

Parallax Project
POWER POP.
This is what Parallax Project is... what they are... what you should aspire to be. The Project is pretty much run by one man - Michael Giblin, with the able assistance of a revolving door collective of established and new-comer artists.
The song, To The Moon , has an air of Matthew Sweet about it - a definite compliment in this genre of music - not so much if they played grindcore.

Don't think power is all these guys got, (If It's) All The Same To You is a sugar sweet ballad cut by sombre strings.

Rachel Goswell
Rachel Goswell is a member of the great indie sadcore band Mojave 3, so the feel-good sunshine that permeates her solo debut, Waves are Universal, is a bit surprising.
The final track on the disc is Sleepless and Tooting (yeah, ignore the title). This song shimmers and even shimmies a touch - all jangly, folky pop lifted up by a reedy, whistling organ.
(yes, I do like a song with a nice organ part - it may be becoming obvious).
sleepless and tooting
*thanks to the good guys at Better Propaganda for this one.
Also, I have put a link to Better Propaganda on the left hand side under Music Resources, visit them.

john vanderslice: mgm endings
YES, I have gone on about the greatness of John Vanderslice before, from his work in MK Ultra to his now stellar solo efforts, but if you haven't given his noirish story songs a listen, here is a chance to rectify that in one fell swoop. His latest album, Cellar Door, is available in remixes on his website, as are many, many, more great works spanning his career.
Go and listen. (after further listening I have discovered that the vocals have been pretty much mixed out of the remixes, diminishing them in my eyes... uuuh, ears, I mean)
*Now after listening hit the MP3 link on the left hand side and marvel at what you find.

What I'm listening to right now
This is TVOTR singer Tunde Adebimpe on a home demo that was entitled OK Calculator, which was self-released before their studio efforts as a band. The demo release contains a total of 18 tracks and displays some self-indulgence - this track is over 16 minutes in length.
+ on a train - this track is no longer available
tornado is lo-fi, indie, folk, pop created by Frenchman Sammy Decoster. I really enjoy the laid back feel of the vocal with the upfront urgency of the drumbeat.

Rogue Wave
Rogue Wave are Gram Lebron, Sonya Westcott, Pat Sturgeon and Zach Rogue. And Rogue Wave are pop. Just how much so is obvious when listening to these tracks.
They just released their debut - 'Out of the Shadow' - on Sub Pop Records (it was originally released in early 2003 on their own label Responsive Recordings) and are touring with A.C (Carl) Newman as openers on most of his dates. I picked up tickets for Newman's Toronto date last week and am now looking forward to seeing the opening act as well - a rare occurrence for me. I first heard of Rogue Wave at fellow blogger Chris's POP77 music blog - he hosted a couple of tracks you can get here.
This is what Carl Newman himself said about the band: '... Rogue Wave seems like a classic (San Francisco) Bay Area band, in the tradition of Thinking Fellers and Barbara Manning, they've just got that vibe...'

MANTLER
With the keyboard reaffirming itself in indie rock circles thanks to The Fiery Furnaces magical albums - could it open the door for other keyboard based artists to click with the Hipster crowd?
One man who deserves the attention of listeners is Toronto native Chris A. Cummings who calls himself Mantler. Signed to the German label Tomlab, Cummings music is kin to late 70's piano based artists such as Steely Dan's Donald Fagen and The Doobie Brothers Michael McDonald. The songs are built on piano and organ with little in the way of guitar, save for the bass.

ANDREW
Andrew is Andrew Sandoval, a man clearly enamored of the glory of pop music. Luckily for him and us he has the talent and vision to have created the sweet nuggets of pop he has on 'What's it all About?', 'A Beautiful Story', and his debut EP 'Million Dollar Movie'.
A pop historian as well as musician, Sandoval produced Rhino Records reissues of The Monkees albums in the mid '90's and is now working on a book about The Monkees career between 1965-70.

The Waxwings
This song swaggers and struts from your speaker cones until the voices rise up in... harmony?.... huh? You were feeling some Stones-like sex 'n' roll, you could feel your lips Jaggering up into a pout and then the California harmonies sweep over you and... and... you feel becalmed, sweetened, but still hot and sexy.

Matt Sharp
Former Weezer bassist and The Rentals frontman, Matt Sharp, has released his full length solo debut entitled 'Matt Sharp' (he also released an EP in 2003). This is so far away from what he has done with Weezer or The Rentals - it's all introspective and quietly sad at times, but also beautiful - a surprising result from the former Weezer extrovert.
Here he explains how he came to live and record the CD in a small town in Tennessee.
"I received a call from an old acquaintance. She heard that I'd been looking for a place that was far away from everyone, a place to think, a place to breathe, a place to write and record some very slow and sad music. It was a strange and dark time in my life." - Matt Sharp

the laws have changed
The magic in this track is Neko Case's voice - singing hard and high - in a register that is far from natural for her. At the points where her vocal is multi-tracked the song really comes to life for me. Carl Newman uses her voice to perfection dressing it with a 60's backbeat, the jangly twang of guitars, and a simple organ melody. For me this is the highlight of The New Pornographers second CD Electric Version.

The High Drivers
The High Drivers are, as far as I can tell, an unsigned band from Northampton, England. Four young lads led by Andy Crofts' very British pop-song writing - not BritPop - no, no, this is descended from the 70's - dirty guitars and keyboards stirring up memories of great bands like The Jam.
'How Long' is an instant favourite - great melody, whiny electric guitar, and an acoustic guitar sound I loved from the get go.

PAS/CAL
Detroit's Gene Corduroy [lead guitar], Casimer Pascal [rhythm guitar, vocals] and Little Tommy Daniels [drums] became Pas/Cal in late 2000. After signing bassist Nathaniel Burgundy in February 2002, they soon after inked a deal with Le Grand Magistery Records. There is a definite love of The Beach Boys harmonies and sunshiney beach life imagery, but this is not another group of Brian Wilson worshippers as evidenced by their sound - to me they come across a little closer to the bouncy indie pop of Dressy Bessy with a little melancholy mixed in now and again, diluting any saccharine tendencies - a problem inherent in this genre of music in less capable hands.

THE BLUESKINS
The music blog New(ish) has two tracks of this upcoming band from Gawthorpe, a small village in Yorkshire, England
The band consists of former boxer Ryan Spendlove on guitar and vocals, seventeen year old Richie Townsend on a second guitar, Ryan's old school friend Maff Smith on the bass and Paul Brown on drums.
Take Jet and add a little more soul and a lot more believability and you have The Blueskins pretty much. If you like rock 'n soul boogie you might find something you like here (although they do slow it down now and again).

Now that Blueberry Boat has finally weighed anchor at your local shop - hopefully the local indie shop is your shop - many tracks are surfacing on mp3 blogs that host their own songs, unlike me, who only offers what I find on the internet, although what I offer is for the most part free and legal.

Amazon.com has Crystal Clear also from Gallowsbird's Bark.

The birth of BLUE-EYED SON
Andrew Heilprin was frontman for surf punkers 40 Watt Domain, but then he saw the light and it was acoustic, it was organic, it was music billowing from wooden top guitars, sharpened by ivory keyed notes rising up through the voices.
He re-christened himself Blue-Eyed Son and created his solo full length debut - West of Lincoln.

TOM WAITS
Tom waits has a new CD coming out on Anti Records October 5th. It's called Tom Waits Real Gone.
"Written and produced by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan, his wife and long- time collaborator, REAL GONE features 15 tracks of funk, Jamaican rock-steady, blues both urban and rural, rhythms and melodies both Latin and African and, for the first time, no piano.
The crash and collide of rhythms and genres within a song creates a hybrid unlike any music he has made before. The comic, funky, hip-hop/r and b inspired instructional dance number, "Metropolitan Glide" ("now show your teeth, bray like a calf/Then kill me with your machine gun laugh") and the sonic mayhem and nonsense rhyme ride to "Top of the Hill" (why don't you give me another cup of that soup?/Turn a Rolls Royce into a chicken coop") are both punctuated by a live band and turntable playing along to Waits' home recorded voice percussion.
Lyrically and musically the kinetic songs play against the haunting lull of the ballads. The epic, ominous and hypnotic Jamaican rock-steady groove of, "Sins of the Father," follows the dark trails of straying, passed on from generation to generation, from those at the top to those at the bottom and back around again, echoing a theme of the record.
While Waits has traditionally used his voice as an actor, inhabiting each song with a different vocal character, on numerous songs here, he also uses it as chugging, sputtering, wheezing syncopated engine of sound and rhythm that can explode like a string of sidewalk firecrackers or sound like the indecipherable incantations of a street corner shaman." - from Anti.com

Sondre Lerche
I posted about Sondre Lerche a while back, a couple of times actually. I caught his 2004 North America concert opener(his first with a band behind him) at The Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto and he put on a good show. He seemed to really enjoy himself up there banging away at an electric guitar. Especially during Two-way Monologue, which is probably the best song he has yet written.
The structure of the song itself is impressive enough, but his vocal ability is often overlooked due to the simple fact that he makes it look, or should I say sound so easy. The guy almost sounds like he's talking in your ear, cooing you to sleep - what he is doing is crooning. You don't hear it much nowadays in the pop mainstream, when it was the mainstream it was usually done with a slower tempo and a big band - behind guys like Sinatra and Tony Bennett.
Two-way Monologue is simply a great piece of pop music writing. From a lazily strummed acoustic guitar it moves into drums, bass, and choppy guitar. Then the song pops like a big red balloon as the chorus hits, organ swirling, back-up voices cooing along.

BEWARE of Viscidity.com
Okay music lovers beware! This is where I found the 'FAULTY' Constantines song files VISCIDITY.COM.
All right... maybe I should have listened to them before posting them... but, after further investigation all 1200 (just an estimate) files are Celine Dion singing something I have heard before, but I have no idea what it's called or from. AND I DON'T CARE TO KNOW!
Just a warning to all of you out there surfing and searching for good music.

We Are Scientists
Found this great little song on Drowned in Sound's home page, recommended by one of their readers... they owe her.
The band is keith (guitar-vocals), chris (bass-vocals) and michael (drums-vocals). From their website bio I can make out that they are from Berkeley CA. originally, but now make New York their home base.
This is off their three song EP Ask Your Doctor About We Are Scientists

Toronto Trippers
If you are planning a trip up Toronto way (I say up because quite a few populous spots are south of Hogtown) you could be kicking yourself if you don't check into who might be playing during your stay.
This is the place to keep an eye on with so many bands, great ones and up and comers, making The Horseshoe their venue of choice.
Before your trip you should definitely check out the Rotate This website. A average to small sized record shop on Queen Street West, their website has all the info you will need.
Although The Horseshoe isn't the only spot, not in the least, there's: lee's palace, the mod club, rancho relaxo, warehouse, phoenix, and the opera house, to name a few.

It's lunch time... do I have to eat this?
>>from CMJ Music News:
"Brits Are A Bunch Of Californicators"
The British version of FHM recently challenged its discerning readership to vote online for the top 10 albums of the past decade, and apparently, the pinnacle of artistic achievement of the past 10 years is (drum roll)... the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Californication. Coldplay managed two slots, No. 5 for A Rush Of Blood To The Head and No. 7 for Parachutes (these two bookend the vastly inferior OK Computer). In other news, both Chris Martin and Anthony Kiedis were recently hospitalized with sudden repetitive stress injuries."

OZMA
Are you ready for some 'geek' rock a la Weezer? Ozma on Kung Fu Records are well known in their home state of California and have toured with Weezer (who I am guessing are heroes of theirs) and are clearly mining the same vein of fuzzy, crunchy power pop that feels good - that has that deja vu voodoo... you know... it sounds like someone else, but you still like it.

I have a new blog called *HIP/STER/EO.
Focusing on independent record labels and featuring some of the [[[free+legal]]] MP3s they have kindly made available to all.
I launched this blog yesterday and am still working out the kinks, but i would still like to invite everyone to take a look.
Any suggestions on labels or artists would be appreciated.

Why Wilco?
Wilco have never excited me. Every so often I would get a copy of something they released (i.e. Summerteeth, Being There, Mermaid Avenue w/Billy Bragg) and I would enjoy it, but I don't get the sudden worship of them by so many. Is it that there's a vacuum left by the loss of some other band or bands - a void created by a break-up of some old and beloved favourite artist, or by a nosedive in that band or bands previous stellar quality? A raw gaping wound that now must be filled by someone or something similar, but that 'someone or something' must be great, must be renowned by their peers and their critics alike - you must have... you will accept... nothing but the best to replace your old fave. Maybe it's a result of the overzealous idoltry of so many rock critics concerning Wilco's last release,
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and the just released A Ghost is Born. The ingesting of enough over the top platitudes, praise, fawning, and 'oh god, I want to have your baby ' reviews can leave quite an impression on some readers and may just plant an 'agressive rock critic/passive rock fan' engineered seed. A seed which may have blown free from a weedy plant sprouting in the previously postulated 'vacuum'. Let's call that plant Hype and the flowers it's seeds produce have had many, many, many names. Unfortunately, great bands are hyped in the same manner as mediocre ones - I'm not saying Wilco are mediocre, it's just that this album probably won't change your life, as I read some fan claim, or cause a reaffirmation of faith (unless you believe that Jesus... sorry, Jeff... Tweedy can do no wrong) then you can drop to your knees right now in a perfect rapture the envy of a Jimmy Swaggart fan club president.

Peeling Back The Label - WORDS ON MUSIC
the Ostermeir brothers
Words on Music is a young indie label based in Minneapolis. Founded in 1998 by brothers Eric and Marc Ostermeier, their first release came in March of '98 with Eric's own band Motion Picture.
Lush and serene, Motion Picture's music is played by Eric Ostermeier (voice, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, drum kit, orchestration) and John Rigg (electric guitar, second voice) with Merilee Klemp (cor anglais), Ingrid Liepins (violin), Josi Wergin (french horn), and Sarah West (cello).
Guitar and cello dominate this Motion Picture song -
I Know It Will Rain On My Wedding Day.
The label is also home to Coastal, a critically lauded Utah quartet of the Slowcore variety.
Coastal eternal + northern

For Against, Fiel Garvie, The Meeting Places, Remnant Three, and Should make up the low in number, but high in quality roster.
MP3's of almost the entire roster can be found here.
"Summer 2004 releases for Words On Music include Halfway To You, Coastal’s second album, and Echelons, the re-release of For Against’s 1987 debut (first time on CD).
In September 2004 Words On Music will release a tribute album devoted exclusively to the Wire pop gem “Outdoor Miner.” The album, A Houseguest’s Wish, will consist entirely of versions of this Wire masterpiece from the 1978 7” single and Chairs Missing LP. Participating artists include Adam Franklin (Swervedriver), Lush, Flying Saucer Attack, Typewriter (Mark Bandola of The Lucy Show), Kick On The Floods (ex-For Stars), Timonium, Experimental Aircraft, Sharron Kraus and many more.
Forthcoming Words On Music projects include the re-release of a long out-of-print album by Factory Records-esque band Remnant Three, and the fourth Motion Picture album in early 2005."

Described as the real deal 'Thrills', this LA based band bring words to the pens of critics like - summery, jangly, fuzzy, wistful, giddy, retro, catchy, infectious, warm... and bands such as - The Beach Boys, The Byrds, Small Faces, T Rex, The Doors, Stereolab, Breeders, Bowie...get the idea?
Made up of keyboardist/singer Donna Coppola and Chris Colthart, guitarist, writer, producer, and singer - they are joined by drummer Chris Phillips (formerly of the Squirrel Nut Zippers) and bassist Scott Barber. Colthart and Coppala formed the band in Boston under the name Solar Saturday, but on relocating to LA they took the name The Faraway Places.
Their debut album is 'Unfocus On It' on which they were ably assisted by members of Papa Fritas and a couple of recent escapees of The Boston Philharmonic.
