"Good Thing"

This song was on an album, yes - a 12" wide slab of vinyl, I bought when I was about 11 or 12. This scratched, and no doubt gouged, piece of plastic is sitting in a milk crate about two hours drive from where I sit - with the best songs underlined in pen on the back cover and on the disc itself.

Just get a look at the cover shot, the hair, the ruffles - maybe it was groovy back in '66 when this album came out. Possibly it isn't cracking me up as it should, for I spent many happy hours, years ago, listening and looking at this album. Perhaps this accounts for the way I am today. Hey, NO wisecracks.

MP3|Revolver - MP3 players, technology, industry, music

If you are into digital music and getting the dish on the latest hardware and software available, check out MP3Revolver.

SLEEPER - Pie In The Sky

I stumbled across this artist, Sleeper, while searching for the band 'Big Star'. Interesting and at times childlike music by a fella called Woody James. After some internet searching I know next to nothing about Mr. James, but perhaps his music is all you need to know. Low key tunes with acoustic guitar and two voices that to me at times seem to be trying to weave a bit of the 'California' sound into their harmonies contrasting with some more upbeat stuff in the same vein.

from the afterthecomet.com website:

Woody James - whose likeness, strangely enough, can not be reproduced with conventional photography, has been writing songs since well before the invention of the blanket. His work here with Reverend John "Yonko" Baltic evolved... read the rest

Ted Leo's new disc 'Shakin' The Sheets' will hit the streets on October 19 on Lookout Records. The pounding 'The Angels Share' is on the album - now one of my favourite driving songs. Another fave from Leo is Come Baby Come off of 'Treble in Trouble'.

I have to thank Kingblind for the link to this German tv commercial, after watching, remember I watched this at 4:30 am... you'll understand the 'Wake Up Call' title... if you can stop laughing.

undertones - the best of new and local music in guelph

Here and there on the 'net you will come across something that makes you smile. I know, I know, that covers a lot of ground. What made me smile was finding the website for CFRU Radio's Undertones radio show broadcast out of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, which is about 20 minutes from where I sit. Who knew? It's on the University of Guelph's campus radio station and Undertones audio page has some interesting stuff: interviews, live on air performances, a nice little selection of Canadian indie artists: the arcade fire, mathew barber, barzin, blood shot bill, mayor mcCa, nathan lawr, wax mannequin, and more.

The Wind-Up Birds

If describing a band was like a recipe, the basic ingredients would possibly be like this... "Take a piece of Belle & Sebastian, mix them with The Pixies and Dexy's Midnight Runners and sprinkle liberally with the Sex Pistols" You'd then end up with a rather fine band from Leeds called The Wind-Up Birds.

THE VEILS: Lavinia

There is a timeless quality to The Veils music. A quality enhanced , no doubt, by producer Bernard Butler (formerly of Suede) and the songs arrangements - but, a quality achieved by the songs lyrics. The best songs on 'The Runaway Found' are those that concern relationships, good and bad - 200 years ago and 200 years from now, relationships will be the same - they are timeless.
Finn Andrews is the group's singer and songwriter and he has a distinctive voice - kind of a soft rasp - but, rasp isn't right - more of a rustling, especially on the slower tracks - like barefeet brushing through long grass. And when he uses it on tracks like 'Lavinia' it is to great effect.

marianne faithfull

Marianne Faithfull has released over twenty albums, starting in 1965 when Rolling Stones manager, Andrew Loog Oldham, convinced her to give it a go. Hitting the charts a number of times in her native UK she rose fast and fell hard. After ending a relationship with Mick Jagger, in the early 70's, she nurtured a serious addiction problem, but in 1979, after getting her habit under control, she made a startling comeback with her album 'Broken English' (mp3 download of title track). Startling not only in it's representation of a strong, sexual woman, (why'd ya do it' - mp3) but also in the beautifully ravaged voice that the formerly girlish sounding Faithfull now commanded.

It was around 25 years ago that Tuxedomoon came barrelling out of the electronic music lab of San Francisco City College and began making flirtatious, whimsical, provocative, idiosyncratic music. Bjork defines 'Medulla'

Bjork explains how the much anticipated album MEDULLA came about:

"I was going to call the album ‘Ink’, because I wanted it to be like that black, 5,000 year-old blood that’s inside us all; an ancient spirit that’s passionate and dark, a spirit that survives. Something in me wanted to leave out civilisation, to rewind to before it all happened and work out, ‘Where is the human soul? What if we do without civilisation and religion and patriotism, without the stuff that has gone wrong?’ When I first moved to New York there was room for immigrants and eccentrics and whoever, then suddenly it became the most scarily patriotic place on earth. “Then”, Björk continues, “I got drunk – surprise!- with my artist friend Gabriella and she came up with the title Medúlla. It basically means ‘marrow’ in medical language, in Latin. Not just you’re bone marrow, but marrow in the kidneys and marrow in your hair, too. It’s about getting to the essence of something. And with this album being all vocals, that made sense."
"I used to write lots of lyrics that were like: ‘I am HERE, and I’m walking down THIS street”, she says, “but on this album there are no rules with the words. If you want to sing about a candle-flame, then go for it, and if you want to sing about existentialism or a celibate nurse from Boston, then go for that, too. Some of the time, I’m just following a train of thought. There are no flashing neon signs.”
“Sometimes there’s a kind of weave or blend where nobody is more important than anybody else; other times I wanted each singer to have a sort of solo.”
“It wasn’t working”, she says, “and I was trying to figure out why; wondering, ‘Where are the songs in all this mess?’ Then I sat down at the mixing-desk and started muting the instruments, and it was like, ‘Oh! There they are.’”
“The only other rule”, she says smiling “was for it not to sound like Manhattan Transfer or Bobby McFerrin. After that, it became a very spontaneous, kind of carefree album to make. I didn’t want to spend another two years making it just a tiny bit better - fuck that.”
“I liked all of us to make any special noises we could on the new album”, she says. “Sometimes there’s a kind of weave or blend where nobody is more important than anybody else; other times I wanted each singer to have a sort of solo.”
“There are lot of little things about this record that seem to fit together”, concluded Björk, “and it feels good to trust nature and my subconscious. You start some kind of universe, and because you’re doing it from the right place, it completes itself. I definitely feel that I’m getting better at what I do, too. Not that it’s good, necessarily; just that there is an improvement. The best thing, maybe, is that I’m enjoying all those little nuances with people, all those micro-moments that I used to think were just pauses between real life.”

Andrew Bird is fascinating to hear through his recordings, but seeing him live is worth much more than the few dollars that indie artists of Bird's calibre sadly go for in our society.

TED LEO::balls out

Ted Leo will unveil his new cd in the very near, but not close enough, future. Word is that the new stuff has leaked onto filesharing services and yet, on his own website, are what I have heard some say are demos from the new album. Whatever they are, the track The Angels Share kicks some ass - I can imagine them bouncing off the studio walls - if this is the demo? Ted and the boys sound like they're having a blast - when I listen I can see Ted himself bounding up and down, over and over, like a twenty two year old Pete Townsend. They've all got their balls out on this one, let's hope no one got hurt... and I pray no one put an eye out - that would be a tough one to explain.

(sounding more than humbled) 'Well, ya see, uh... first we, uh... we... got our balls out...'

Shelflife Records

Shelflife Records gets around. Beginning in what their website label history calls a "small southern California suburb" - they packed up and moved east to NYC two years later in 1997. It didn't end there, the cross-continental jaunts I mean, for close to 4 years later the three principal players upped and moved again... all the way back west, landing in San Francisco this time.

The artists who call Shelflife home are from the indie rock camp, bands such as: The Maybellines, The Shermans, Call and Response, The Radio Dept, Postal Blue, etc.
With close to 5o solo artists and bands, you may just have heard a Shelflife recording without realizing it.

When I began the test I hoped it was a Björk song I had heard before and not one of quite a few I hadn't yet had the pleasure. Turns out I do know this song and like it.

You really should check out 'An Idiot's Guide to Dreaming' for the music and the weirdness: MUSIC - Dead can Dance, Tallulah Gosh, Butthole Surfers, The Slits, The Chicken Hawks. WEIRDNESS - Transdimensional Abduction and the transdimensionally modified.

::Endearing Records::

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada is where you will find the good folk of Endearing Records. It's also where you will find the famous intersection, Portage and Main, also known as Windy Corner, that has recorded some very brutal winter wind chills.

From the Endearing Records website, this is how the label came to be:

"Endearing was formed in 1995. Why? Our friends were putting out music we liked and we thought it deserved to be heard. This remains our guiding principle to this day. There is no defining genre or pattern. If there is a mandate, it is to release music we like from people we love. We have diverse tastes and find a variety of music stimulating and challenging so this has resulted in a diverse catalogue over our 8 years. We hope you enjoy what you hear."

There are about thirty artists on the Canadian label and about as many MP3s to sample. Here are a few to give you an idea.

starflyer 59

Starflyer 59 is pretty much Jason Martin, who recruits players when he's going on the road to fill out the big sound of the recordings.

Currently working on the next recording slated for early 2005 release, Martin has been at the business of Starflyer 59 since 1994.

The music has a metallic sheen - as do the album covers of the bands early releases.

the self-titled debut - 1994 - Tooth and Nail Records

gold - 1995 - Tooth and Nail Records

Struttin'

I like some good funk every now and again and the blog, Sounds Like Funday, has a favourite: The Meters - Cissy Strut. These guys are one of the best funk bands... ever.

Go give it a listen.

I was thinking... why let *HIP/STER/EO have all the fun exposing visitors to great little indie record labels and the free songs they offer. Here's a list of the great bands who make Flameshovel Records home.

Ancient Greeks
Che Arthur
The Duddley Corporation
Joan of Arse
The Joggers
Judah Johnson
Low Skies
Lying In States
Make Believe
The Narrator
The Natural History
The Race
Viza-Noir

I believe there are mp3s available for each band on this list. Enjoy.
