The Lovely Feathers Tour 'Hind Hind Legs'

The Lovely Feathers are Montreal's twisted sons, somewhere between the epic pop of the Arcade Fire and the insular indieness of label mates, Islands. Of course, you must consider the exuberance with which they spew forth their lyrics, continually becoming obsessed with a turn of phrase, or rhyme, and repeating it like a riff on guitar. This band still shows more promise than accomplishment, which is not to denigrate what they have done (there are amazing songs on both releases to date and they are my favourite band out of Montreal), but to simply say that the best is yet to come. They're still touring their latest effort on Equator Records, Hind Hind Legs, and here are the dates currently scheduled:

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin: MP3s, Tour Dates, 'Broom' Track List

Someone Still Loves You Boris YeltsinSomeone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin have been hammered for their unwieldy moniker, but I won't do that, the name doesn't bother me in the least. These boys from Springfield, Missouri, have a sixties aura in their vocals and song structures, but I don't think that's intentional. I just think that Springfield, MO may be (I said may be) like the kind of place that would revel in it's glorious past while enduring it's tedious present, which would rub off on it's youth. Youth who would approach puberty knowing the names of everyone on the Lawrence Welk show, or being well versed in the dusty record collections of their parents and grandparents.

SSLYBY's debut full length, Broom, is a sparkling record, not too sweet, it leaves you satisfied and, thankfully, without the sugar rush of mainstream radio. Broom finally became available nationally on October 24, 2006, on Polyvinyl Records. With Broom being re-mastered and now also found on 180 gram vinyl, you should definitely be buying the record, or CD, right here.

For your listening pleasure you'll find some mp3s below. I've also included upcoming tour dates and the track list for Broom. Let me know if you like it.

THE MAY FIRE

A while back a band called The May Fire got in touch about sending me a CD to check out, but the offer slipped my slippery mind until something triggered the memory. So, here's a post about the San Francisco band called The May Fire:

If you're looking for some catchy, yet grimey, girl-yelped rock 'n roll... pull over 'cause here it is. Led by the smokey raw purr of Catty Tasso, the band of El Pipe (Drums/Vox), Rob (Bass/Keys), and Nachito (Guitar), are wrapped tightly about Tasso's voice and the always welcome cowbell.

The Shins: MP3s + 'Wincing The Night Away' Track List

shins of the corn
THE SHINS OF THE CORN

It's still a long way off to the release of The Shins anticipated third album, Wincing The Night Away, but it's good, believe me, it's good. A handful of songs will hook you on first listen and all of those will work their way deeper into your flesh like barbed fishhooks of melody. A few of the tracks which have me gasping while dangling at the end of 20 lb test monofilament are "Sleeping Lessons", "Australia", "Phantom Limb", and "Red Rabbits". Until the disc arrives in stores on January 23, 2007, here are some mp3s from earlier Shins efforts, including a couple of covers. If you're into the live tracks, there's a James Mercer fan site that has a few live shows available to download here.

*Sixeyes Sponsors Tour!

*Sixeyes is proud to announce that it is partnered with insound.com in bringing the 'much-loved-at-*Sixeyes' band, Devastations, to North American audiences for the first time. This is also a first for *Sixeyes, as far as being a tour sponsor, and I couldn't be more excited that it's for this great band. Joining Devastations on the road will be All Tomorrow's Parties band, The Drones. Both bands are well above par and differing enough in style to make this a great show... please check out the tour specifics and dates through the linked ad in the top right sidebar.

Here are some mp3s of the bands and here's the link to *Sixeyes myspace page (why not add *Sixeyes as a friend while you'e there) where a handful of tracks can be streamed from each current release by Devastations, and The Drones. Vanderslice's mk ultra:"The Lesser Beauty"

I've been a little obsessed with this song from John Vanderslice's earlier musical career in his band mk Ultra. Found on the self-titled debut from 1994, "The Lesser Beauty" is one of fifteen tracks that brought Vanderslice's talents as a songwriter to the public view. Lasting close to five years, the band, mk ultra, released three albums, the aforementioned self-titled debut, along with Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1996), and The Dream is Over (1999). Vanderslice's love of experimental and intriguing sound textures shows up on this very first album, as well as this song. It also bears his unerring ability to craft melodies which instantly latch onto you.

An upcoming release (this October 24th) from NYC band, +/- {Plus/Minus}, boasts a song called "Steal The Blueprints" and it should be heard. From the rumble of the bass, to the crack of the drum kit, to the smooth mellow vocal this song's never boring start/stop vibe meshes beautifully with the final words of the song "... without knowing where you're going".

SKIRTING THE DARK FRINGES with Devastations: *Sixeyes Interview

Interview by Alan Williamson

devastationsBW111

The music of Australian-bred trio, Devastations, is akin to nights when you're so tired you can't sleep--those sleepless nights when you see and hear things in a different way and they stick with you because of that fact. 3 a.m. is a different world for those who rise at 7:30 each morning and the music created by Devastations is from that dark of night, that dark of dreams, and the darkness within us… the 3 a.m. of the soul.

Formed from the core of Melbourne rock band, Luxedo, in 2002, Tom Carlyon, Hugo Cran, and Conrad Standish, have always kept moving, either creatively, or geographically. Critical acclaim befell the trio after the release of their self-titled debut in 2003--a recording ripe with promise, one that easily demonstrated the talents of the band, especially through the songs, "Loene", "We Will Never Drink Again", and "Previous Crimes". The songs have a smeared European decadence shrink-wrapped about the brooding talents of Carlyon, Cran, and Standish. If you find the intelligent music authored and essayed by Brooklyn band, The National, to be moving, then I highly recommend you seek out Devastations. They have a more sparse sound, three members in comparison to The National's five, but the songs of both outfits skirt the dark fringes. And each boasts a singer whose tobacco-stained throat curls up from the words like smoke, smoke that attempts to obscure the ache and yet only shrouds it in the vocal charisma of the singer. It's a cultural crime that more have not had the opportunity to discover them, although the crime fighting indie record label, Brassland, has taken the proper steps to right this wrong… they've signed Devastations and will give their latest disc, Coal, a Stateside release this coming Tuesday, October 24th.

(An interesting tidbit: vocalist and bassist, Standish, is a childhood friend of Angus Andrew of Liars and he contributed three songs and guested on the Liars latest album.)

I'd like to thank Devastations guitarist, Tom Carlyon, for taking the time to answer these interview questions.

* * * * * * * * *

*Sixeyes: I’ve got to start by saying that the Nick Cave comparisons I repeatedly find in album reviews are getting tiresome. All harping on the same things: the vocals, song subjects, and that both singers are tall. Okay, it's a lazy comparison, and they are favourable comparisons, but do you see the similarity others cite so often?

Tom Carlyon: Comparisons full-stop are pretty limiting. I’m not sure what it achieves. It’s like palm-reading – I don’t believe any of it. It’s probably more apt to say The Devastations share similar influences. But then again, maybe we don’t. I just don’t know.

*Six: ...or, is it taken as a compliment and let go? Has there been a comparison you found much more apt, or even incomprehensible?

TC: Well, Nick Cave is no schmuck. Better being compared to him than, say, Donny Osmond. Someone once compared us to the sound of a meteor cooling in the cut grass. That’s far more appealing.

*Six: If you had the luxury of providing the press with a brief description of the band and it's sound, which the press would have to use, what short, succinct phrase would you give them?

TC: Tropical Goth.

*Six: Coal was recorded in Berlin, Melbourne, and Prague, and I hear that the Berlin location was formerly the East German headquarters for radio and television... is this also where Radiohead have recorded? How did you choose this location and while I'm on this subject, who produced the record?

TC: Not sure if Radiohead recorded in the same Berlin Studio. Quite possibly – it’s an immense compound with many studios under the one roof. We chose the location on the advice of our friend Alex Hacke who recorded these sessions. We were living in Berlin at the time, had just finished 4 months of fairly solid touring and had the opportunity to begin a new record (Coal) – it seemed like a good idea at the time. As far as production goes, we (as in Conrad, Hugo and I) produced Coal.

*Six: What outside force had the greatest effect on Coal?

TC: When we left Melbourne in 2003 we were elated at the prospect of leaving home for an eternally prosperous future on the road! This feeling was undoubtedly delusional but it had a large influence on what songs we chose to record, how we decided to arrange them and where we would record them etc… We also toured solidly for 4 months before recording began. This put us in the same car for a long time so we were forced to talk about our next record. Unfortunately we screwed up the Berlin sessions due to our own inept playing (too much prep) and had to re-start nearly everything again in Prague. In the end, time became the biggest factor. Having abandoned the Berlin sessions and re-started everything in Prague some months later we then finished Coal over 8 very long months in Melbourne - due largely to financial restrictions, engineer illness and touring commitments. This lengthy process actually opened the door for collaborations with both Padma Newsome (Clogs) and Bic Runga.

*Six: Like several prominent Australian bands before you, you've made a long distance move to the 'old country'. Where does the band now call home, or even feel at home? And why did you leave Australia?

TC: We left Melbourne because it takes 23 hours in the air and another 10 in transit just to get to London Koko in Camden to play with The National on May 31st. Now, we’re just trying to keep on the move – like gypsy’s or something. After the UK tour Conrad and Hugo will move back to Berlin for a while and I’m going to set up a duchy somewhere in Moravia – put the wife and kid in a castle and find some subjects. Actually, there’re plenty of castles in Ireland. I shall book a flight to Cork.

*Six: What strengths and weaknesses do you feel that working as a trio brings to Devastations music? Also, I believe the band expands to a quartet when on the road, who is it you rope in for this position?

devastationsBWsmallTC: Working as a trio is my favourite format for watching other bands and playing live because every aspect of a band and it’s music is visible. The musicians look naked and the sound is right in front of you. Also, you can hear the fuck ups and you can see any chemistry between the individuals – if it exists.

Having said that, if (as we have) you write songs that have string arrangements, piano choirs and go-go dancers, you can’t fairly represent them as a three piece. ‘Sex & Mayhem’ as a 3-piece is akin to hearing ‘Sexual Healing’ played on trombone. One other down-side of a three piece is that the guitar becomes the instrumental centrepiece and that can get a bit tiresome after a while.

On piano, we initially roped in Kiernan Box. He’s been with us for 2 years now. When he’s not available we are lucky enough to have Nigel Yang to fill-in.

*Six: Even before your signing to US indie Brassland, I heard a similarity to former Brassland artists, The National: in the baritones of the singers, the way both bands aren’t afraid to veer off the ‘rock’ roadmap and take less traversed pathways. And I’ve learned that both have also utilized the talents of instrumentalist Padma Newsome. Was Padma, or The National, a factor in your choosing Brassland, and how do you know Padma?

TC: Conrad told me Brassland was a cool label in NY releasing interesting music and getting good feedback from all corners. So, some months later, I just sent a copy of our first record – expecting to hear nothing more. Months later we were on tour in Europe when we got an email from Alec saying he’d seen our itinerary and we should hook up with Clogs in Paris. We duly hooked-up meeting Padma as a result. A few weeks later we were sound checking in Bra, Italy and Alec conveyed his intention to sign us – I think he even used the term ‘against my better judgement’. We were ecstatic.

Padma’s incredible contribution to Coal came about some months later when we were all back in Australia. He lives in Mallacoota. We would send song files there and receive back from him incredible pieces of music that stand up in their on own right. Padma is a genius.

*Six: Much of what I've read online mentions the Yeah Yeah Yeahs Karen O and the wonderful compliment she paid your self-titled debut album when she said… 'The Best Thing I’ve Heard All Year' [MOJO Magazine Dec, 2003]. Have you ever met her, or wanted to seek her out to thank her? And have you seen any positive effects from her kind words?

TC: I think she saw us play in Berlin once. I didn’t meet her although I will definitely thank her for her kind words when/if I ever do. Con met her in Melbourne when the YYY’s toured Australia and stayed in touch to some degree. They eventually did some recording together in LA a while back.

Some people definitely took a bit more interest in us after Mojo. Even we did. It was the first time our name had appeared in a UK publication. Afterwards we were inundated with weird emails from record companies saying how much they love us and would we be interested in private helicopters etc. At the time we were touring Germany and selling CD’s out of a 2-door hatchback. So we said ‘yes, we would like a private jet’ – then never heard another word from any of them. Strange people.

*Six: What about the song writing – is it a group effort, or individual? And who is penning the lyrics? There is some wonderful imagery within the songs.

TC: It’s a group collaboration. The songs are inspired by and therefore written for this band. The imagery comes from the dubious poet hiding inside us all.

*Six: Finally, what does the rest of 2006 hold for the band? Any plans to tour North America in the near future?

TC: Well, right now we’re on tour in the UK. ‘Coal’ is coming out in US through Brassland in July and in the UK/Europe through Beggars Banquet in August. We will definitely be touring the US at some stage this year. We’ve never been. I hope you like us.

BELLA

Vancouver's Bella work the synth/sugar pop angle until it becomes razor sharp. The three members, two girls and one boy, could be three razor blades... blades that'll get your legs nice and smooth... if you shaved your legs, of course I don't (but, I'm open minded).

Bella

With all members taking turns at the mic, a vocal identity for the band isn't a strong point, but the simple arrangements, musicianship, and strong production, make the music distinctive. I mentioned the production because it was achieved in part by the owner and chief engineer of Vancouver's Hive Studios, Colin Stewart. Stewart engineered Bella's Pretty Mess, but that's not all, his list of credits is impressive to say the least: Black Mountain, The Salteens, Pink Mountaintops, Despistado, Jon-Rae Fletcher, The Unicorns, p:ano, Destroyer, Frog Eyes, The Handsome Family, Hot Hot Heat, The Walkmen, and many more.

Listen to Bella--I especially like the guy's falsetto in "Crystal Tears"--from the album, Pretty Mess...

BEAT RADIO: Free Album Download

Brian SendrowitzLate last year I came across the band Beat Radio, but I can't recall how I did that. But, no matter, I'm here to tell those of you who didn't catch them the first time around that the band has just made their debut album available as a free download. Just follow the Beat Radio link below, and bearing that link is the brief piece I wrote about Beat Radio last year.

New York based band, Beat Radio, are led by singer/songwriter, Brian Sendrowitz (guitar), along with Phil Jimenez (guitar and keyboards), Mike McCabe (bass) and Jim Mansfield (drums). The quartet fit into the 'indie' groove quite nicely. The vocals and harmonies have that well worn, slightly offbeat/off kilter veneer that feels organic, and in fact it's Sendrowitz vocals and lyrics which outshine anything else in the songs. The songs are, for the most part, framed in the raggedy guitar sounds of the early nineties, but the band is quite capable of walking or running as the song dictates, despite playing their first live gig a scant four months ago.

You will also find the latest live dates on the album download page. If you're in NYC, or the New Jersey area, you're in luck.

Here's the song that inspired my writing about Beat Radio in the first place...

Devastations: Coal: Review

Devastations
Coal
[October 24th, 2006 - Brassland US/Beggars EU]
*Sixeyes Score: 8.9 out of 10

Devastations album, Coal, opens with "Sex and Mayhem", and ends with a broken heart. Sound familiar? Just how many relationships started and ended that way? I guess pretty much all of them that came to an untimely end. But never fear that broken heart; just cue up Coal again and you're swept into the 'sex and mayhem' once more. And all this sex comes and goes in the dark, slinky sound of the Australian trio, Devastations.
On the aforementioned album opener, "Sex and Mayhem", the confidential and confident baritone of vocalist/bassist, Conrad Standish, the snaky, supple guitar of Tom Carlyon [also piano and vocals] and the understated, selfless drumming of Hugo Cran, don't 'remind' me of Bryan Ferry, so much as make me think of him. I can imagine Ferry singing this song; it's a dark, lovely number that I feel would be well suited to a cover by Ferry. If there's one song you should hear from, Coal, it's that one.
Standish's voice comes at you from the corner of the room, the dark smoky corner where broken hearts and dust lay side by side… a voice of smoke and wine. And this is the voice that leads you from beginning to end, I hesitate to label it a croon, but it is mighty close. Whether it's up on it's high sweet edge in "Terrified", or the 'things-look-all-right-but-they-don't-feel-all-right' David Lynch vibe of "Take You Home" and "Man of Fortune", Standish reassures us with his delivery and seduces us with his words.
An outstanding sophomore effort from this Euro based trio with Australian roots, one that comes swooping out of smoky shadows on pale wings stained black with tobacco and worry. Antipodean's self examination meets European decadence giving us torch songs from minds ignited by twenty first century angst. Does that sound good? Well, it should, because it is.

Scissors For Lefty 'Underhanded Romance': Acoustic MP3s

San Francisco's Scissors For Lefty, who are on Brit label, Rough Trade, finally saw their full length, Underhanded Romance, released in the UK on October 2nd. Two singles have already seen the light of day across the pond, ("Ghetto Ways" and "Mama Your Boys Will Find A Home").

Imagine Spoon grabbing a synthesizer now and again... and with a more obvious British influence. Yeah, it's good.

Coconut Monkeyrocket

Coconut Monkeyrocket makes music inspired by cartoons... this music is a cartoon soundtrack you can dance to. Not what you'd usually find here at *Sixeyes, but it's unique and extremely entertaining. And it just may be perfect for that Halloween party you're planning.

Devastations: TOUR DATES

devastationscolour

Things are looking rosy for Devastations, a band of long and lean Australians who have been calling Berlin, Germany, home for some time now. Their most recent release, Coal, is now out in UK/Europe on Beggars [Sept 26] and will see a well-deserved stateside unveiling on Brassland, October 24th. And it's fitting that they've chosen this city of long lost secrets, grimy old buildings, and smoky glass as their home away from home, as that description can also be applied to their music.

The band will soon set foot on North American soil for the first time and you can be there! Joining them on this inaugural trek will be fellow Aussies, The Drones. Interestingly, the Devs and Drones were both shortlisted for this year's Australian Music Prize which celebrates the "best album" of the year.

Princeton (the band)

Princeton is a California based trio of twin brothers Jesse and Matt Kivel along with Ben Usen. These fellas appear to be attempting to deliver the sombre beauty of Nick Drake, the peppy peppermint pop of the sixties, and the naiveity of those past times on their mini LP, A Case of the Emperor's Clothes. And with very little in the way of tools, as explained on their web site... "one microphone, one acoustic guitar, a cheap keyboard, six pairs of hands, three sets of vocal chords, and one small egg shaker"... they've achieved this perceived goal admirably. If you like shiny, sparkling harmonies glinting from the face of timeless melodies, you'd do well to focus your light upon this band. It'll be hard not to smile when they're smiling at you.

Don't worry your pretty little head, pretty little Nellie McKay [fan page] has a double album coming the end of this month, October 31st. Pretty Little Head will finally be issued on New York indie label, SpinART Records, after it had languished on the shelf since October 2005 when her previous label, Columbia, nixed her plans to release a full 23 song, 65 minute album by stating they wanted a cut down 16 song and 48 minute version.

Leeroy Stagger

Canada now has it's own Ryan Adams, his name is Leeroy Stagger. If Adams had kept toeing the line he drew with his acclaimed outfit, Whiskeytown, and swallowed enough hard times to grow a Steve Earle throat, well, hell, then Stagger would be American, but he's not... he's ours. But better yet, his latest and third full-length, Depression River, is everyone's.

Stagger delivers his songs in an incredibly familiar voice, ragged and warm it masks his youth (24) and yet it doesn't hide his sincerity. Although he does stir echoes of Earle, he recalls Wilco's Jeff Tweedy on the mid-tempo nugget, "Wish You Were The Trees". What stands out most of all is Stagger's ability to pen songs that seem like old friends. The album was released in Canada, October 3rd, but it won't be released stateside until February 2007. So, spread the word that rootsy alt-country has a new 'it' boy and you'll be able to say say you were a fan all along... when he's sitting up there with Letterman.

Woolly Leaves

Woolly Leaves is a side-project of Constantines keyboardist, Will Kidman. A quiet lo-fi bedroom recording done with skill and talent, and none of the trepidation you might expect from one who spends their time in a band led by a powerful writer and performer like Constantines singer, Bry Webb, and who often does his work in the shadows of the stage.

Kidman's voice carries a slight quaver similar to fellow Canadian, Neil Young. His voice and music are intimate and endearing, giving up touchstones such as double-tracked echoes of Elliott Smith to the rustic glow of Toronto's Hayden. Kidman's album, Quiet Waters [Outside Music], nearly whispers quiet tunes whose merits should be shouted.

A favourite song is "Soft Place to Call Home", a track that ends on a brief, yet lovely, coda wavering from the keys of an organ... a warmer, softer sound I couldn't imagine.
