david and the citizens

David & The Citizens: Free MP3sSweden's David & the Citizens will release a new self-titled EP on March 7th, 2006. Found on Friendly Fire Recordings it features the songwriting talent of David Fridlund, who last year released a critically acclaimed solo debut, Amaterasu. His band work with The Citizens is harder, poppier, more guitar driven then his solo recording. It is very good, as you'd expect from a writer of Fridlund's abilities.

"In November 2004, a limited edition of 50 wood "cloud boxes" which gathered ten CDs of new music from His Name Is Alive was released via mail order from Time Stereo. These quickly sold out. An 11-track sampler of the boxset, titled Cloud Pop, was subsequently planned and it appears below as a limited time free download courtesy of His Name Is Alive. These downloads are of interest to owners of the Cloud Box as well as those who missed out because these are freshly remixed versions, never before released in any form. Enjoy!"

AMESTORY: National Release Jan. 31

Amestory: Free MP3sAmestory released their first full length last October on Portia Records. I would guess that it slipped under the radar of many, including myself, even though I did receive a promo copy of the self titled disc. Unfortunate that I misplaced the disc after a change of residence and, you know... out of sight, out of mind. The good news is that the album will receive a national release on January 31st. And it offers 12 tracks of sparse, airy, indie pop laced with a chamber music mentality, not to mention a rich piano sound. Mix their carefully arranged and presented miniatures with vocalist Mike Russell's Death Cab-like tones and the restrained support of Doug Prior (piano), J.D. Knotts (drums, slide) Derek Coburn (bass), and guest violinist Ray Tong (violin) and this band (now that I've gotten around to them) is one I can highly recommend.

Sweet Billy Pilgrim: We Just Did What Happened And No One Came: Review

Sweet Billy Pilgrim: Free MP3sSweet Billy Pilgrim
We Just Did What Happened And No One Came
[Wonderland Avenue 2005]
*Sixeyes Score: 8.4 out of 10

UK band Sweet Billy Pilgrim have finally put out a full length album, We Just Did What Happened And No One Came, and it's stunning. The band members, Tim Elsenburg on vocals, guitar and electronics, Anthony Bishop on bass, guitars and vocals, and Al Hamer on drums and percussion, have created a near-minimalist work of art that practically turns the sound of rain on window pane into music. "God In The Details" opens like a Tom Waits song off of Swordfishtrombones, albeit one swimming in a placid pond. In fact this mesmerizing record by Sweet Billy Pilgrim evokes water in it's soft, open spaces and the 'fallen from grace' choir boy vocals from opener, "Atlantis", to closer, "Atropina". Like water, the music rises and falls, carries with it surprising and unseen power, refreshes and relaxes--always matching the gliding, deceptively powerful vocals of Tim Elsenburg. An album which will reward repeated listens, if only to pour again and again the beauty of Sweet Billy Pilgrim into you like a glass of spring water. This band has discovered a secret to beauty, whether they realize it or not, and that is to match their music to the amazingly affecting vocals of Elsenburg. Highly recommended.

Tomihira: New Album Coming

The San Francisco band, Tomihira, are close to finishing up their debut recording, Play Dead. But until it sees the light of day, they have kindly put up remastered and remixed versions of the mp3s on their site. And as Dean (pictured left above) says himself, they are 'just plain better', and I agree.

I have written about the band previously and below is part of what I said. If you follow this link you will find the original post and an interview I did with Dean Tomihira.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I've said it before (because it's true), 'the best songs are sad songs' - the ones that pluck and strum the minor chords of your life. The band, Tomihira, led by Dean Tomihira (vocals and guitar) and ably bolstered by the talented pair of Markkus Rovito (drums and percussion) and Chris Zaballos (bass), deliver these songs. Songs with the melancholy thrum and ache of guitar matched by the Pacific Ocean blue of Dean Tomihira's vocals.

Put simply... Tomihira is West Coast electric melancholia, beautifully controlled and arranged.

Wintergreen: The Extended Play EP

Wintergreen: Free MP3sA young band based in LA, Wintergreen have released an EP titled Extended Play and, I believe, are working on a full length. The guys seem to be more than a little cracked [a good thing]. I asked for some info on Wintergreen and this is what Wintergreen said...

we are all straight.enjoy nights out at fancy restaurants and seeing movies...or just nights at home curled up under blankets on the couch watching old TV shows....we prefer people that are honest...no playing games!!! people that know what they want in life and aren't afraid to dream big and really go for it...but love is far more important then good looks and success....also...wintergreen has been a band for about 18 months in Los Angeles...we are all Midwestern kids that are unknowns really...we immediately began writing and recording for an album with Michael krassner (ealimart, califone, koufax) and later worked with niko bolas (Neil young, Keith Richards, Fiona apple, Billy Joel, kiss, Bette milder, Travis, Warren Zevon... ok.. the guy is a recording legend) but we are label and money free...thus we've always been waiting for open studio time and time from others to get this sucker done once and for all....we got antsy and put out the EP as a lil teaser of what is to come on my friends label Mt.Fuji....has redeye distro and might be people's favorite new indie label someday....random hollywood truths are....jessica simpson and nick lachey were at our first show ever.....cameron diaz was at our 10th and has our demo....shows 8 and 9 we were openers for the get up kids on their farewell tour....indie 103.1 was the first radio station to play us ever...and played us a few times this summer....yet wintergreen members are all fucking crazy in their own way...our lead guitarist is homeless...most of us work for low wage and can barely get by...but all of us have been through the best and worst together...we only want to be in this band and only death will break us up...

Trevor Sherwood age 26-leo
Jared Anderson age 28-taurus
Todd Ramsey age 28 Gemini
Drew Mottinger age 23 Capricorn

----------

What do they sound like? Well, the English jaunt of The Smiths permeates 'When I Wake Up" and to a lesser extent, "Waste of time". Actually the song "Waste of Time", it's title is little more than just that, a title (time wise I mean). As two out of these three mp3s, including "Waste Of Time", are little more than 2 minutes in length... this foursome don't waste any time... perhaps due to financial constraints, studio time does add up. A lack of funds can help crystallize and distill a band's creative energy.

Spinto Band

Spinto Band :: Free MP3sThe Spinto Band are from Wilmington, Delaware, a city with many ties to history and tradition, as most American east coast cities do. And the band Spinto, as well, has ties to history, and in a sense, tradition. Key founding member, Nick Krill, discovered the spark which set the band in motion while sifting through his late grandfather's belongings close to ten years ago. Roy Spinto, Krill's grandfather and a guitarist, lived down in the Mississippi delta where he practiced the odd habit of scrawling original songs on the inside of Crackerjack boxes. These songs were the impetus that Krill needed to start off on a creative journey leading to the formation of the Spinto Band. Now after seven albums the six man outfit have moved past bringing those songs to life and now pen their own quirky indie music; they have also earned deserved comparisions to bands like The Flaming Lips and Pavement. The band is currently touring their latest effort on Bar None Records, Nice and Nicely Done, in the UK. With only a few shows left [overseas that is, they return stateside to continue touring], here are the dates and some free mp3s...

Sufjan Stevens :: Free MP3s + Lyrics

The indie world's 'buzz' boy since the release of Illinois in July is Sufjan (Soofyan) Stevens. It's hard to recommend one of these mp3s... but a current fave is "Chicago". Stevens composes very lyrical music. Melodically lyrical and... uhh, lyrically lyrical. This is essentially the same post I put up a couple of weeks ago... the difference being I've added the lyrics for some of the mp3s from Illinois.

Of course you can find more MP3s here.

Sufjan Stevens: LYRICS

"part 1: the world's columbian exposition part 2: carl sandburg visits me in a dream"
Oh great intentions
I've got the best of interventions
But when the ads come
I think about it now

In my infliction
Entrepreneurial conditions
Take us to glory
I think about it now

Cannot conversations cull united nations?
If you got the patience, celebrate the ancients
Cannot all creation call it celebration?
Or united nation. Put it to your head.

Oh great white city
I've got the adequate committee
Where have your walls gone?
I think about it now

Chicago, in fashion, the soft drinks, expansion
Oh Columbia!
From Paris, incentive, like Cream of Wheat invented,
The Ferris Wheel!

Oh great intentions
Covenant with the imitation
Have you no conscience?
I think about it now

Oh God of Progress
Have you degraded or forgot us?
Where have your laws gone?
I think about it now

Ancient hieroglyphic or the South Pacific
Typically terrific, busy and prolific

Classical devotion, architect promotion
Lacking in emotion. Think about it now.

Chicago, the New Age, but what would Frank Lloyd Wright say?
Oh Columbia!
Amusement or treasure, these optimistic pleasures
Like the Ferris Wheel!

Cannot conversations cull united nations?
If you got the patience, celebrate the ancients

Columbia!

I cried myself to sleep last night
And the ghost of Carl, he approached my window
I was hypnotized, I was asked
To improvise
On the attitude, the regret
Of a thousand centuries of death

Even with the heart of terror and the superstitious wearer
I am riding all alone
I am writing all alone

Even in my best condition, counting all the superstition
I am riding all alone
I am running all alone

And we laughed at the beatitudes of a thousand lines
We were asked at the attitudes
They reminded us of death

Even with the rest belated, everything is antiquated
Are you writing from the heart?
Are you writing from the heart?

Even in his heart the Devil has to know the water level
Are you writing from the heart?
Are you writing from the heart?

And I cried myself to sleep last night
For the Earth, and materials, they may sound just right to me

Even with the rest belated, everything is antiquated
Are you writing from the heart?
Are you writing from the heart?

Even in his heart the Devil has to know the water level
Are you writing from the heart?
Are you writing from the heart?

"Chicago"
I fell in love again
all things go, all things go
drove to Chicago
all things know, all things know
we sold our clothes to the state
I don't mind, I don't mind
I made a lot of mistakes
in my mind, in my mind

you came to take us
all things go, all things go
to recreate us
all things grow, all things grow
we had our mindset
all things know, all things know
you had to find it
all things go, all things go

I drove to New York
in the van, with my friend
we slept in parking lots
I don't mind, I don't mind
I was in love with the place
in my mind, in my mind
I made a lot of mistakes
in my mind, in my mind

you came to take us
all things go, all things go
to recreate us
all things grow, all things grow
we had our mindset
all things know, all things know
you had to find it
all things go, all things go

if I was crying
in the van, with my friend
it was for freedom
from myself and from the land
I made a lot of mistakes
I made a lot of mistakes
I made a lot of mistakes
I made a lot of mistakes

you came to take us
all things go, all things go
to recreate us
all things grow, all things grow
we had our mindset
all things know, all things know
you had to find it
all things go, all things go

you came to take us
all things go, all things go
to recreate us
all things grow, all things grow
we had our mindset
(I made a lot of mistakes)
all things know, all things know
(I made a lot of mistakes)
you had to find it
(I made a lot of mistakes)
all things go, all things go
(I made a lot of mistakes)

"Casimir Pulaski Day"
Goldenrod and the 4H stone,
the things I brought you,
when I found out you had cancer of the bone

Your father cried on the telephone,
and he drove his car into the navy yard,
just to prove that he was sorry

In the morning, through the window shade,
when the light pressed up against your shoulderblade,
I could see what you were reading.

All the glory that the Lord has made,
and the complications you could do without,
when I kissed you on the mouth.

Tuesday night at the Bible study,
we lift our hands and pray over your body,
but nothing ever happens.

I remember at Michael's house,
in the living room when you kissed my neck,
and I almost touched your blouse.

In the morning at the top of the stairs,
when your father found out what we did that night,
and you told me you were scared.

All the glory when you ran outside,
with your shirt tucked in and your shoes untied,
and you told me not to follow you.

Sunday night when I cleaned the house,
I find the card where you wrote it out,
with the pictures of you mother.

On the floor at the great divide,
with my shirt tucked in and my shoes untied,
I am crying in the bathroom.

In the morning when you finally go,
and the nurse runs in with her head hung low,
and the cardinal hits the window.

In the morning in the winter shade,
on the 1st of March on the holiday,
I thought I saw you breathing.

All the glory that the Lord has made,
and the complications when I see His face,
in the morning in the window.

All the glory when he took our place,
but he took my shoulders and he shook my face,
and he takes and he takes and he takes.

"The Man of Metropolis Steals Our Hearts"
Trouble falls in my home
Troubled man, troubled stone
turn a mountain of lies
turn a card for my life
Man of Steel, Man of Heart
Tame our ways, if we start
To devise something more
Something half ways

Only a steel man came to recover
If he had run from gold, carry over
We celebrate our sense of each other
We have a lot to give one another

I took a bus to the lake
Saw the monument face
Yellow tides, golden eyes
Red and white, red and wise
Raise the flag, summer home
Parted hair, part unknown
If I knew what I read
I'll send it half ways

Only a real man can be a lover
If he had hands to lend us all over
We celebrate our sense of each other
We have a lot to give one another

Took my bags, Illinois
Dreamt the lake took my boy
Man of Steel, Man of Heart
Turn your ear to my part
There are things you have said
Raise the boat, and raise the dead
If you take us away
Still can we say:

Only a steel man can be a lover
If he had hands to tremble all over
We celebrate our sense of each other
We have a lot to give one another

The Lovely Feathers: New Album Coming + MP3s

The Lovely Feathers: Free MP3s:::photo by Lilly Gulycz

Montreal's The Lovely Feathers are excited to announce the release of their debut album, Hind Hind Legs, out May 2nd on Canadian indie label Equator. The band recorded Hind Hind Legs at Studio Plateau in Montreal, working with a diverse team which included producer Jimmy Shaw (Metric guitarist), engineer Drew Malamud (whose credits include Sum41, The Dears, Death From Above 1979 and Stars), and mixer John O’Mahony (Jimi Hendrix, System of a Down, Matt Pond PA).

*Sixeyes contacted the band and guitarist/vocalist, Mark Kupfert, filled me in on what the band's been up to:

"Since coming off the road we put the finishing touches on the album. The album has been basically done since August, but there were a few small things. The album will be released in the first week of April and it will have 5 re-recordings of songs off the My Best Friend Daniel demo and 8 new ones. Awaiting the release, some of us are finishing school (me), working at part-time jobs and visiting girlfriends in South Korea (Daniel is in Seoul visiting his girlfriends' family while teaching English). He'll be back we hope. During the next three months, we hope to demo out our new songs, so that we're ready to record our next album in the summer. Funny, thinking that our record hasn't come out yet, and we're pondering the next one already. That's what happens when songs are with you for too fuckin long. Next album will hopefully take less than 8 months to be released."

Before touring this spring (stay tuned for dates), The Lovely Feathers will gear up to film the video for their first single, “Frantic”.

*Sixeyes hopes that these demo mp3s will stir a similar Arctic Monkeys/Clap Your Hands Say Yeah mania for this outstanding Montreal band. Here are some mp3s from the 2004 demo recording, My Best Friend Daniel to get the ball rolling...

Magnet is Even Johansen

Magnet is Even Johansen, a Norwegian musician who makes his home in the city of Bergen, also home to international musicians Sondre Lerche and Annie. And not unlike Lerche, Johansen has a lushness to his sound. The music is lush and melodic, set apart by an ear for quirky sounds and instruments. Magnet is an indie package with a major label voice... and that's not always a bad thing.

Magnet's latest, The Tourniquet, will be released in North America February 14th 2006

Doveman leaves "Chinatown"?

Thomas Bartlett: Free MP3sThere has been a lovely collection of covers available on Thomas Bartlett's Doveman webpage for some time. Entitled Steffani Birthday EP, it offers touching cover versions that bear the idiosyncratic touch of Bartlett's talent as a musician and the unmistakeable high, sharp whisper of his voice. It's as if he wants to make it as hard as possible for the mic to pick that voice up, but of course that's not true. The final song of this EP is titled, "Chinatown" and it's slow, sweet, and sour--a beautiful song that immediately demanded repeated listening. The lyric is especially good, even more so if you are in the right frame of mind.

Now I have just come across a new mp3 of a Doveman song called "I Don't" and discovered that it is the same song. So, I've come to the conclusion that it is an original. If I'm wrong, Thomas, let me know, please.

You should also seek out Doveman's debut album, The Acrobat. *Sixeyes review of it is here. It can be bought through insound.com.

Great Lake Swimmers: Free MP3s

Toronto based quintet, Great Lake Swimmers, make their American label home at Misra Records, which has thankfully released, stateside, the band's 2003 self-titled debut. For a band that's still relatively unknown, they have drawn some lofty praise from the European press:

'Beautiful bittersweet, drifting, late summer melancholia' **** Mojo

'Dekker squares the circle between Nick Drake, early Neil Young and Will Oldham' **** Uncut

Led by singer/songwriter, Tony Dekker, whose melancholy vocals seemingly float above the music, Great Lake Swimmers are a rustic, pioneer orchestra drifting across a wilderness lake, with Dekker's vocal the devoted missionary sent forth to gather in those that have lost touch or faith in the Holy Trinity mentioned above by Uncut magazine.

Sounding like a rural choirboy who has grown up and out of boyhood and into a neighbourhood of ethereal folk, inhabiting a country of alternative flavours -- Dekker describes the band this way:
"We are basically a quiet, alt-country flavored, independent band who play thoughtful, shaky folk music," says Dekker. "Come and see us if you'd like to have a quiet night out." -- From this article by Michelle Lobkowicz.

Between The Pine: Between The Pine: Review

Between The Pine
Between The Pine
[Hot Porta Records - 2005]
*Sixeyes Score: 7.9 out of 10

This one man band from Rhode Island, Between The Pine [a.k.a. Jim Diotte], is without a doubt my favourite artist of 2006. What? What's that? The year 2006 is hardly two weeks old? All right... so far, Between The Pine is my favourite and will most certainly be my 'Discovery of the Year'. And I truly hope he is one of yours as well. I stumbled upon the fantastic songs of Between The Pine a short time ago and have previously written about the music and artist here and here. One of these pieces was a brief review of the FREE downloadable EP available at 80H Records, but those songs have grown more pleasing as time passed(the three tracks you can grab can be found on the full length album as well). When I heard another song from the full length, "Bronze Shoes", it just further confused me as to why I hadn't heard of this artist, because it's another strong track--one with a chorus that will corkscrew into you and swell until you're singing and swaying along. "Bronze Shoes" has, as many of these songs do, been given an indie folkiness by the addition of an accordion--an instrument which finds itself somewhere between a Hammond organ's atmospheric power and a harmonica's French film soundtrack playfulness--this song also, due to it's strong melody line and the accordion, stirs up welcome echoes of The Arcade Fire... if they were playing for you and you alone in the back of a mini van or in a dark corner at a noisy party. The song also boasts the pleasant surprise of backing vocals from Diotte's wife, Robin Toste.

The album opener, the feathery "Sit down, Shut Up", melds the familiar feel of a Beatles-like rhythm guitar and a much less familiar, but pleasing, vocal which resembles Baxter Dury (son of Brit legend, Ian Dury). While the song, "We Awoke", enters, or draws us into, the unique universe of Sufjan Stevens, if he lived in a art house film shot in France, or another of those 'old country' countries with a laissez-faire attitude. It's the vibraphone, or xylophone, that lends a European air to the melody and which always stirs images of foreign films and sub-titles in my mind. "We Awoke" starts sadly and beautifully and stays that way--only adding more layers of blue over the waltzing alabaster melody. A standout track which has been granted a precious fold of gray matter in my skull, an area labeled 'permanent memory", smack up against the 'feel good' center. Other highpoints include "I'll Carry On My Father's Joke", "We All Know Where You Are", and "Shoot Me In The Spine".

A dash of Sufjan Stevens, a little lo-fi indie, an eccentric mix of instrumentation, and a timelessness that evades reasoning is what the debut album from Between The Pine is all about.
If I can turn just a few people onto this great music then the songs themselves will do the rest. You should give Jim Diotte and the DIY gems he cuts in his Rhode Island basement studio a little time, but no effort... oh no, it's no effort at all to listen to imagination and talent.

"When The Sun Goes Down" Free MP3 Demo

Arctic Monkeys: Free MP3 and Lyrics

Many visitors are coming here searching for the Arctic Monkeys track, "When The Sun Goes Down". *Sixeyes doesn't have a free and legal mp3 of that song from the upcoming release, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not [Domino], but here is a free and legal mp3 of the demo for those interested. It was originally titled, "Scummy".

Scroll down for a link to more demo mp3s.

+ When The Sun Goes Down [Scummy Demo]

So who's that girl there?
I wonder what went wrong
So that she had to roam the streets
She don't do major credit cards
I doubt she does receipts
It's all not quite legitimate

And what a scummy man
Just give him half a chance
I bet he'll rob you if he can
Can see it in his eyes, yeah
That he's got a driving ban
Amongst some other offences

And I've seen him with girls of the night
And he told Roxanne to put on her red light
They're all infected but he'll be alright
Cause he's a scumbag, don't you know
I said he's a scumbag, don't you know!

Although you're trying not to listen
I bet your eyes are staring at the ground
She makes a subtle proposition
Sorry love I'll have to turn you down

And oh he must be up to something
Want half a chance to show he's more than likely
I've got a feeling in my stomach
I start to wonder what his story might be
What his story might be

They said it changes when the sun goes down
And they said it changes when the sun goes down
And they said it changes when the sun goes down
Around here
Around

And look here comes a Ford Mondeo
Isn't he Mister Inconspicuous
And he don't have to say 'owt
She understands she's here to get picked up

And she's delighted when she sees him
Pulling in and giving her the eye
Because she must be fucking freezing
Scantily clad beneath the clear night sky
She don't stop in the winter, no and...

They said it changes when the sun goes down
And they said it changes when the sun goes down
And they said it changes when the sun goes down
Around here

They said it changes when the sun goes down
And they said it changes when the sun goes down
And they said it changes when the sun goes down
Around here
Around here

What a scummy man
Just give him half a chance
I bet he'll rob you if he can
Can see it in his eyes that he's got a nasty plan
I hope you're not involved at all

Meredith Bragg and The Terminals: Free MP3s belowMeredith Bragg and The Terminals
The Departures EP
[The Kora Records - Jan 17 2006]
*Sixeyes Score: 8.0 out of 10

This is the collection of songs that should push Meredith Bragg and his band, The Terminals, to the fore of the indie playground. Third track, "Let's Start Over", resembles current 'indie band of the moment' Death Cab For Cutie during a power outage while the EP as a whole is acoustic/chamber pop that never fills up all the cracks and crevices... it wisely leaves air between the sounds. Bragg's voice can resemble DCFC's Ben Gibbard, but without his keening overtones and it, Bragg's voice, does a more than adequate job of tackling the ominous task of covering Jason Molina's (Songs: Ohia) "Two Blue Lights".

The songs on this EP are so complete and yet so well trimmed. Each track a perfect haircut, each hair in place... no mousse, no gel, no ozone chomping hair spray... this is all natural. You never looked so good.

Secret Mommy: Free MP3s

Secret Mommy: Free MP3sDo you turn a blind eye and deaf ear when you see, or hear, the term electronica? Do you imagine hearing, once again, a handful of fascinating bleeps, squiggles, and bloops looped until you can't stand to listen any longer? Ok, I feel that way at times, although Vancouver's Secret Mommy uses an array of electronic sounds and samples to grow the captivating song "Dance Studio". At times humorous, it is always reaching in some small way towards a different pattern. The looped foundation of the track is the root system and the shifting rhythms are the sprouting leaves, the unfurling tendrils.

Not being a fan of experimental electronica I have a hard time comparing the music of Secret Mommy to anyone else... but betterPropaganda name checks Prefuse 73 in the similar artists box, so I'll go with that and also you could check out fellow Canadian and electronic musician, Montag.
