John Weinland

Portland band, John Weinland, sing and play a song called "Other Folks" on their album, Demersville. Smack dab in the middle of this record is a song that would fit seamlessly on a much older recording called Comes A Time from 1978, this John Weinland song easily recalling the towering talents of Comes A Time's writer, Canadian icon, Neil Young. With the bittersweet pedal steel running beneath the creaky boat of Adam Shearer's vocals, "Other Folks" is brought to a close with the line "... I can feel your breath on the back of my neck, like a whisper from home...". A more than apt descriptor for this song and album, an album which will make you ache and comfort you at the same time... like sitting alone in your bachelor apartment on New Year's Eve 1,500 miles from home, with a bottle of wine, a box of old family photos, and a corkscrew from Value Village.

Shearer, who gives the band it's name (his full name being John Adam Weinland Shearer, perhaps the band is a tribute to a grandfather, or at least, to family. If so, a nice touch), is the primary talent here. His words and voice pull the listener along and inspire the musicians who play on the record, who, along with band members Aaron "Rantz" Pomerantz, Rory Brown, Ian Lyles, and Paul Christensen, include a few notables from the acoustic woods of Portland, Oregon, and they are Norfolk and Western's Rachel Blumberg and Adam Selzer, Blumberg formerly of the Decemberists and Selzer who also plays with M. Ward.

Some have compared the band's sound to Iron and Wine, but I don't follow that, there is a hushed feel to the recording, although Shearer's vocals are much more muscular, more akin to a restrained Howe Gelb with better pitch, especially on track three, "The Letters".

This record won't lift you out of the chair and spin you around, what it will do is seep in like coffee spilled on a paperback book... leaving it's mark and aroma. And I like coffee, but better yet, I love a coffee ring on white paper, it's like an accidental abstract watercolour. So, pour a coffee and listen to the music (the link to buy is below)... and make some inspired art.

Michael Zapruder's Rain of Frogs

Michael Zapruder's album came to me quite a while back, and I did give it a listen, finding some of the songs to be stunning right off the bat. But somehow my plans to post about it got lost along the way. Now, I've got to thank my new mp3 player for rekindling interest in Zapruder's music. The album (Zapruder's second solo effort) is titled, New Ways Of Letting Go [August 15, 2006], on Howell's Transmitter. The Rain Of Frogs are described as a collective on his homepage and the outfit includes Nate Query [Decemberists], Jonathan Segel [Camper Van Beethoven], Scott Pinkmountain [Pink Mountain], Scott Solter of Tiny Telephone (an analog studio), Jon Bernson (Ray's Vast Basement), and some fifteen others. Zapruder, based in the Bay area, has been at this music thing for a while now, doing time in a number of bands (Naked Barbies, Vagabond Lovers) before going solo in the late nineties. He gained some attention with his '52 songs project' where he wrote and recorded a song for each week of the year in 1999, posting the songs here; unfortunately, the songs are no longer available for download. It wasn't until 2002 that Zapruder released his solo debut, This Is a Beautiful Town. But it was New Ways Of Letting Go's lead-off track, "The Alchemist", that grabbed me via my Zen player, it's fantastic. Strings, horns, keyboards, and a sad minor key chorus, which carves a little home in your chest around about the second listen. "Do my work...", Zapurder's repeats, "... do my work...", that's the refrain and it's simplicity is the bright shiny hook in an arrangement which gets more complex as the song grows. Zapruder can sound more than a touch like a less nasal Rufus Wainwright, especially in this song. You have to give this music a try, it will grow on all but the most jaded of listener.

Zapruder is also the sole music curator for Pandora /The Music Genome Project, which is a great way to discover new music. I came across it a couple of years ago, before it took it's current incarnation as a type of internet radio station that you, and others like you, program. DISCOVER: White Birds and Lemons

Hey kids, be the first on your block to secretly covet and hoard your new discovery!! White Birds and Lemons!! If you like, or love, raw vocals... the kind that make you want to wail along with the singer who is wailing along with the garagey bluesy music... then Merry Yeowwww Christmas! Here's your present!

Auckland, New Zealand band, White Birds and Lemons have been laying low on my radar for a while now, I was biding my time waiting for a download that I could share with you, but I can't wait any longer. These four guys are young, in age, and in terms of being a band (no label, no releases, no mp3s even), all they've got is a myspace page, not even a website yet. BUT on that myspace are two songs (demos recorded by Kody Neilson of NZ band The Mint Chicks) which you can stream. So, give a listen to "Secret Drug" and "Stella", it's the former that gets me, although the latter is good and the differences in these two songs does a great job of displaying the range of this band who are: Scott Frantz (vocals/guitar), Rob Dickens (Drums), Matt Wilson (Lead Guitar), and Dom Dipple (Bass).

If these boys, who formed a year ago, do the things I expect of them, this very rough live video of "Secret Drug" will be amazing to look at in a few years and you know, it's pretty amazing to see and hear right now (albeit a tad fuzzy). And I'm surprised at how good the vocals sound on this video... can Frantz's voice be that good? Yes, it can, and that will be proven when they get their EP out for all to hear.

The Layaways Say 'Merry Christmas'

Hushed, lush, dreamy, tasteful, moody, shoegaze, dreampop, all these words come to mind when listening to Chicago's The Layaways. And now Christmas-y can be added to that list as the band have dipped their toes into the voluminous Christmas music ocean and immediately snagged something worth eating. Here it is, hope you've got your fork.

"Jesus Christ" MP3

This song was one I hadn't heard before, which surprises me as I've listened to a fair bit of Big Star. But because it's perfect for this time of year, I figured it was a good pick for you guys, even if you've heard it before. I found the song on a fairly new music blog called Modern Music. Based out of Istanbul, it's proprietor, Bulut, offers insightful thoughts on a wide array of indie artists, plus the odd major label act, along with the prerequsite mp3s.

After doing some research, I've learned that this song is from Big Star's album, Third/Sister Lovers. And I believe I haven't heard any of these songs before. Now, I own the first two albums (bought out of curiousity years ago, and have a handful of favourite songs from them), but I never got around to this one. This song won't usurp my long-time Christmas fave by John Lennon, "Happy Christmas (War Is Over", and it won't make me go to church (not much can do that), but it fits the late December vibe to a tee. And I just realized, as I typed in the title for this post, that this may bring me a few visitors I may have otherwise not reached. Hallelujah!

*Sixeyes Favourite Album of 2006

The Veils Nux Vomica.

It's the album that I've enjoyed more often than any other this year (and if you're a regular visitor to *Sixeyes, you likely know that I'm not big on lists, so this is my best of list). Now I'm not saying it's the best album of the year, I don't have the gall to think I know enough about music, or have heard enough of the music released this year, to even begin to approach that level of gall. This is my favourite. And I only realized that after hearing the songs again and again, after it had fallen by the wayside, on my new mp3 player. If you haven't heard The Veils the first thing you should know is they are led by Finn Andrews (above), a singer and songwriter whose personality comes across in raw waves in his music. His voice is rough and ragged... it cracks and squeaks in all the right places. The songs range from intimate to epic, but almost always romantic. He's not pushing the envelope here, there is definitely not enough experimental clinging and clanging to appeal to some of the bloggers out there drooling over Sunset Rubdown, or Animal Collective. This is just straight up and straight ahead... it's appeal resting in, once again, Andrews distinctive musical and physical voice. There's an old vibe to the music, as if drawn from a long forgotten well. A well now passed over by the self-ironic. A well offering up buckets of passion. If Andrews had been writing music in the early seventies he would have been a star. Right up there with Bowie and Bolan. You know, a little make-up, a little glitter, the pants (or jumpsuit) WAY too tight, multiple appearances on The Midnight Special, a band member who OD'ed. But he is here and now. The hooks are strong and the sound distinctive. It's my favourite of the year.

Jenn Grant

The honeyed-warmth of Haligonian Jenn Grant's vocals will be enough to garner her fans wherever her music is played and she performs. A recent graduate of art school and sometime member of Halifax's contribution to the orchestral pop scene, The Heavy Blinkers, Grant will step into the limelight with her own music, her debut full-length, Orchestra For The Moon, in early 2007. Grant has two singles from the new album available to buy, "Britt n Kip" and "Dreamer".

"Britt 'n Kip" sounds like it's built out of an improvisation, because of the natural flow of images and rhythmic shifts. While this is interesting enough what makes Jenn Grant's songs truly stand out is her voice. It is simply stunning in it's effortlessness and one can only wonder at it's latent power if, and when, she cuts loose and really wails. In these two songs she trades in instrumental subtlety, colouring the tastful arrangements with her words that are twisted, stretched, and warmed by her singing abiliy. I think the only thing that will hold her back from reaching major stardom is how populist her songwriting becomes. But whether or not she appeals to the masses, she will be a star on some scale. She already appeals to musicians, which is evident by the roll call that assisted her in making her upcoming album, Orchestra For The Moon. Names such as Ron Sexsmith, Heavy Blinkers Jason MacIsaac and David Christensen, Jill Barber, and Tyler Messick. She is on the road this month with her band, The Night Painters, who are: Jason Burns - Drums and percussion, Sean MacGIllivray - Bass and backing vocals, Dave Christensen - Electric organ and Flute, Kris Pope - Slide and electric guitar, and Kinley Dowling - Violin. Discover Something New: Bronx Cheerleader, Annemarie, Oxygen Ponies

Bronx Cheerleader - Canada

It was quite a while back when I happily stumbled upon this band and after linking some mp3s from the label (Yummy Recordings) was contacted by Yummy head honcho and future Bronx Cheerleader member, Joe Lapinski. He (or was it Bronx Cheerleader leader, Scott Warren) sent me a copy of the album, Tough Guy Cliches. I raved about it, or in my own low key 'don't-make-too-much-noise-'cause-you-don't-want-to-draw-too-much-attention-to-yourself-'cause-i'm-a-shy-and-private-kinda-guy' way, raved about it here at *Sixeyes. But don't take my word for it... others have said good things as well:

!earshot online said:"This is the greatest pop release I've heard in a long time."

indiecan.com said: "... one of the best debut’s I’ve heard and was definitely one of the strongest releases of the year."

And this is what I said:
"This debut outing is wonderfully packed with strongly memorable melodies. Led by Scott Warren of former Toronto band Pope Factory, this is a DIY bedroom effort which was mixed and mastered by Yummy Recordings label head, Joe Lapinski. Relying heavily on acoustic guitar and frequent double tracking of Warren's soft vocals some of the album's 12 songs raise the spectre of Elliott Smith, but Warren's vocals are more akin to the ethereal voice of Great Lake Swimmer's Tony Dekker brought down to earth by the twin ghosts of Nick Drake and the aforementioned Smith. Standout tracks include "Hollywood Ending", "The Idea", Racing Time", and "Invisible Suit" with it's unexpected serpentine groove. A series of songs that sparkle with the pent up energy of Warren's self-imposed exile from music. Shimmering with melancholia, Tough Guy Cliches, marks a very welcome return to the fold for Scott Warren."

So, the people who got to hear it pretty much raved about it... this here is a reminder, or a refresher, for those of you who didn't give the band a listen yet.

Now download the incredibly generous amount of mp3s offered by the band... and please spread the word and fill your mp3 players with Bronx Cheerleader.

Annemarie - Indonesia

This outfit's manager got in touch with an eye to getting some attention for this band... hope she's happy because here it is. First thing I noticed was the band's name, not the best choice... maybe they could shorten it to AM, but they do have a twee thing going on, so after a brief listen Annemarie seems perfect for a twee pop band. And there is some very sweet pop stuff happening here with the plaintive female vocal giving way to the tobacco-burred sounds of the male voice. Those of you missing the more twee aspects of Belle and Sebastian should heed this band (and download these offerings, plus BUY the music and maybe even add them as a friend on myspace).

The Oxygen Ponies - USA
Paul Megna has a truly distinctive sound vocally and he makes good use of that voice, keeping it out front on songs like "Get over Yrself", with it's sparse but atmospheric instrumentation. This New Yorker has a voice limned with sadness, although not overcome by it, and most definitely not wallowing in it. He gives up a weariness, a weariness worn down by the sadness he carries day to day. And I hope that you do remember that sad songs make the best songs... no, not the most popular songs, the best songs. You remember that, don't you?

NEW MUSIC

Here's some music for you to chew on... something from Austin, Brooklyn, Toronto, Detroit, and Fresno.

First up is a free download from Austin TX band, The Boxing Lesson called "Mirrors". This is a slower paced track than the other three found on their myspace page and it's the one I like more than the others.

Crestview Trust (above) isn't just another Canadian band, so I guess that means they're good, right? A band of friends who now call Toronto home, Crestview Trust may wear their influences on their sleeves, but this is Canada and it's December, so those shirt sleeves are under coat sleeves.

California's Rademacher is a band with talent behind it and I like them, but sometimes I get the feeling they're trying to be odd, instead of just letting that strangeness appear on it's own. They seem to be the kind of band that pulls you in, or pushes you away… which one will you be? These are from their latest EP, Heart Machine

Pas/cal (above) is a large Detroit based outfit, seven members, who make an effort to wring something new from the pop music mop. This determination and their talents produce some great music. This song is from their latest EP, Dear Sir. The band will release their debut full length early next year.

And finally, Arms is a side project from Todd Goldstein, the guitarist for The Harlem Shakes. Recently signed to British indie label, Melodic, Arms' Goldstein has a seven track EP called Shitty Little Disco (BUY). Catchy songs, funny lyrics, and a voice that sounds like a friend, Arms is well worth your time... Shitty Little Disco is not a shittly little EP (or song).

I want to thank Sebastian Krueger for getting in touch to let me know about his music and his new EP, Vestibule.

If you love the beautiful and sad, such as November rocks huddled like abandoned eggs on the beach, then the music of Inlets may satisfy your craving. Another in a growing line of talented bedroom auteurs, Inlets' Sebastian Krueger works the same organic farm as fellow midwesterner, Sufjan Stevens. And he also summons comparisions to another young precocious musician, Owen Pallett a.k.a. Final Fantasy. Only twenty-four years old, Brooklyn based Krueger earns some scratch playing with the band My Brighest Diamond (asthmatic kitty), but he obviously would like to carve out his own creative niche as a songwriter and performer, although he needs your help. You know, you're the ones with the ears and the craving for new music. So, here are some songs from Inlets latest EP, Vestibule, and a link to the free download of that EP at Luvsound, plus the credits for this latest effort. Doveman: "Honey" and more

Doveman is a band and Doveman are:

Thomas Bartlett (pictured above)--voice, piano, wurlitzer, pump organ, harmonium--founding member of Assembly, sometime member of Elysian Fields, Chocolate Genius, and Mike Doughty's band.

Sam Amidon--banjo, guitar--founding member of Assembly, star of the film "American Wake", aspiring sumo wrestler.

Dougie Bowne--drums, guitar--drummer for Iggy Pop, Chris Whitley, The Lounge Lizards, Cassandra Wilson, and Porn Buddhist.

Jacob Danziger--electronics, violin--founding member of flashpapr and City Cricket, sometime member of Saturday Looks Good To Me, and His Name is Alive.

Shahzad Ismaily--drums, guitar--doesn't really play with anyone other than Doveman.

On the band's site are two tracks from their album, 'THE ACROBAT', one of them is titled "Honey". What does it sound like? Well... take early Tom Waits circa Closing Time and The Heart of Saturday Night, Nick Cave's atmospheric keyboard-ripe masterpieces, and a dash of Iron & Wine's gauzy vocals (imagine I & W's Sam Beam with a wider range and more forceful delivery), this is Doveman on the song, "Honey". Some tinkling percussion meets the contrast of a banjo's warm friendly twang and the cool ivory plinking of piano to carry a lovely, lovely melody decorated with silver trinkets. Tasteful baubles draped around throat, dangling from ears, and tugging at wrist; a melody which shows just enough skin to spark the imagination. It's the 'Pink Moon album Nick Drake' with an American whisper and technicolor vista supplanting Drake's British greys, blacks, and whites... listen...
