Forro In The Dark: "I Wish" MP3: feauring David Byrne

"Asa Branca" (White Wing) is the song which Brazilian Forró (pronounced: foe ho) bands are measured by. Forró is not only a type of music, it is also a dance which grew out of the rhythms of the music. Bonfires of São João is the new album by NYC based Forró band, Forró In The Dark, led by percussionist, Mauro Refosco. Several publications are predicting that this band will ignite a renewed interest in Brazilian music--and they have a few heavy hitters singing on the record: David Byrne, who contributes his talent to two tracks, Cibo Matto’s Miho Hatori, and Bebel Gilberto, who sings a version of an old Peggy Lee song, "Wandering Swallow”.

David Byrne had this to say about working with the band on their latest album:
"I sang "Asa Branca" and "I Wish" - the latter song emerged out of a jam. I was warming up with some chord changes and Mauro suggested during the recording session that we all improvise around those chords. The result was surprisingly good - but, maybe because I can, I suggested that with just a few words added, with a vocal, the song might be more focused. The lyrics and vocal turned it into a vaguely Country outpouring of pain, anger and loss - which maybe made explicit the link between forró and North American country music."

Bjork: 'Pagan Poetry' Video + MP3

With all the press concerning our favourite Icelandic pixie, Bjork, and her upcoming release Volta, I've been listening to older Bjork and this is one of my favourites from her album Vespertine, "Pagan Poetry". This song twinkles and flares with emotional beauty.

I've included her controversial video for the song which was directed by Nick Knight. Originally banned by the staid MTV for nudity (Bjork is seen in a dress designed by Alexander McQueen that fails to cover her breasts) this video is nearly as beautiful as the song. I should warn you that there are graphic shots of body piercing... you've been forewarned. ENJOY!
(pssst - the lyrics are below)

PAGAN POETRY by Bjork
Pedalling through
The dark currents
I find
An accurate copy
A blueprint
Of the pleasure
In me

Swirling black lilies totally ripe
A secret code carved
Swirling black lilies totally ripe
A secret code carved

He offers
A handshake
Crooked
Five fingers
They form a pattern
Yet to be matched

On the surface simplicity
But the darkest pit in me
Its pagan poetry
Pagan poetry

Morsecoding signals (signals)
They pulsate (wake me up) and wake me up
(pulsate) from my hibernating

On the surface simplicity
Swirling black lilies totally ripe
But the darkest pit in me
Its pagan poetry
Swirling black lilies totally ripe
Pagan poetry

Swirling black lilies totally ripe
....

I love him, I love him
I love him, I love him
I love him, I love him
I love him, I love him
She loves him, she loves him

This time
She loves him, she loves him
Im gonna keep it to myself
She loves him, she loves him
She loves him, she loves him
This time
Im gonna keep me all to myself
She loves him, she loves him
And he makes me want to hand myself over
She loves him, she loves him
She loves him, she loves him
And he makes me want to hand myself over

Bjork and Jesus & Mary Chain Kick Off Coachella + Video

From Billboard.com:

Jonathan Cohen, Palm Desert, Calif.

"New material from Bjork and Interpol, the first major concert of the Jesus & Mary Chain's first tour in nine years and high-profile sets from hot U.K. exports Amy Winehouse and the Arctic Monkeys marked the start of the 2007 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, Calif. About 60,000 people braved nearly triple-digit temperatures on the first day of the three-day event at Empire Polo Field."

"The Jesus & Mary Chain arguably stole the show with a set full of thick guitar screeds such as "Head On," "Snakedriver," "Teenage Lust" and "Frequency." The set also featured a rumored guest appearance by actress Scarlett Johansson, who sang Hope Sandoval's part on "Just Like Honey..."

"Arctic Monkeys held down an early evening set on the main stage with a blend of high-energy material from their two albums... The best of the new songs was "Fluorescent Adoloscent," which recalled the meaty power pop of Weezer."

Harlem 'Shakes' the Arctic Monkeys

The other day I was listening to my mp3 player and one of those new Arctic Monkeys songs came on. I can't recall which one, but then that may be due to the fact that they are all beginning to sound like the first album. Now this is the important bit, right after that new Monkeys song my player queued up a song by the Harlem Shakes. I already knew this was a good band and after "Sickos" began to play (and it kicked the ass of the Arctic Monkeys track) I thought to myself 'I've gotta tell people about this band... again'. Here's my review of their EP Burning Birthdays and here's what they sound like. And to put it simply this band isn't good they're goddamn great.

So Sorry
I'm sorry, two words
I always think after you're gone
When I realize I was acting all wrong
So selfish, two words that could describe
Old actions of mine when patience is in short supply

We don't need to say goodbye
We don't need to fight and cry
Oh we, we could hold each other tight
Tonight

We're so helpless
We're slaves to our own forces
We're afraid of our emotions
No one, knows where the shore is
We're divided by the ocean
And the only thing I know is
The answer it isn't for us
No the answer isn't for us

I'm sorry, two words
I always think after, oh you're gone
When I realize I was acting all wrong

We don't need to say goodbye
We don't need to fight and cry
No we, we could, we could hold each other tight
Tonight...
Tonight...
Tonight...
Tonight...

I Feel It All
I feel it all, I feel it all
I feel it all, I feel it all
The wings are wide, the wings are wide
Wild card inside, wild card inside

Oh I’ll be the one who'll break my heart
I'll be the one to hold the gun

I know more than I knew before
I know more than I knew before
I didn't rest, I didn't stop
Did we fight or did we talk

Oh I’ll be the one who'll break my heart
I'll be the one to hold the gun

I love you more
I love you more
I don't know what I knew before
But now I know I want to win the war

No one likes to take a test
Sometimes we know more is less
Put your weight against the door
Kick-drum on the basement floor
Stranded in a fog of words
Loved him like a winter bird
On my head the water pours
Gulf-stream through that open door
Fly away
Fly away to what you want to make

I feel it all
I feel it all
The wings are wide
Wild card inside, wild card inside

Oh I’ll be the one who'll break my heart
I'll be the one who'll break my heart
I'll be the one who'll break my heart
I'll end it, though you started it
The truth lies
(nothing we can do)
The truth lied
(and now I wanna know the truth)
But lies divide
The lies divide

My Moon, My Man
My moon, my man's a changeable land
Such a loveable land to me
My care, my co-lead barber I know
There's nowhere to go but on

How honestly my beggar should be
The song's out of key again
My fools, my things
We're digging the things
If the candlelit page again

Take it slow
Take it easy on me
Shed some light
Shed some light on things
Take it slow
Take it easy on me
Shed some light
Shed some light on things

My moon and me
Not skirty swift bean
It's the dirtiest clean I know
My care, my co-lead barber I know
There's nowhere to go
There's nowhere to go

Take it slow
Take it easy on me
Shed some light
Shed some light on things
Take it slow
Take it easy on me
Shed some light
Shed some light on it please

My moon
The moon my man
My moon
The moon my man...

The Park
Why would he come back through the park
You thought that you saw him, but no you did not
It's not him coming across the sea to surprise you
Not him who would know where in London to find you

Sadness so real that it populates
The city and leaves you homeless again
Steam from a cup and snow on the path
The seasons have changed from the present to past

The past...
There's hope to have
In the past...

Why would he come back through the park
You thought that you saw him, but no you did not
Who can be sure of anything through
The distance that keeps you from knowing truth

Why would he think, the boy could become
The man who could make you sure he was the one
The one...
My one...
My one...

The Water
The telegraph cables hum
The few can decipher who the message is from
And deliver it quietly
'Cause some don’t get much company

The harbour becomes the sea
And lighting the house keeps it collision free
Understand the lay of the land
Don’t let it hurt you
Or it will be the first to

The water
The water didn't realize
It's dangerous size
The mountain
The mountain came to recognize
It's deep and rocky sides
More than realized

Pale as a pile of bones
You long for your babies and this is how they grow
Wind-battered, knocked over
The teeth by the shoulder
Watching the gray sky
That’s acting like a good guy

The water
The water came to realize
It's dangerous size
The mountain
The mountain
Came to recognize
It's deep and rocky sides
Came to recognize
It's deep and rocky sides
More than realized

Past in Present
The scarlet letter isn't black
Gotta know who's got your back
Because they're right in front of you
Because they're telling you the truth

There's so much present inside my present
Inside my present and
So, so much past inside my present
Inside my present inside my present
So, so...

Feeling it from dark to bright
When a wrong becomes a right
When a mountain fills with light
It's a volcano, it's a volcano
It's a volcano, it's a volcano

I have so much present inside my present
Inside my present and so
So much past inside my present
Inside my present inside my present
And so,
So much past inside my present
Inside my present
Inside my present
And so,
So much past inside my present
Inside my present
Inside my present

Limit To Your Love
Clouds part just to give us a lesson

There's a limit to your love
Like a waterfall in slow motion
Like a map with no ocean
There's a limit to your love
Your love, your love, your love

There's a limit to your care
So carelessly there
You that drove them down
It's a limit to your care

I love, I love, I love
This drink on my stream
I love, I love, I love
The trouble that you give me
I know i know i know
That only I can save me
I'll go i'll go i'll go
Lie down alone

There's a limit to your love
Like a waterfall in slow motion
Like a map with no ocean
There's a limit to your love
Your love, your love, your love

You can't really smile
It should be written on your face
I'm piecing it together
There's something out of place

I love, I love, I love
This drink on my stream
I love, I love, I love
The trouble that you give me
I know, I know, I know
That only I can save me
I'll go i'll go i'll go
Out of love

Because there is no limit
There's no limit no limit no limit, to my love.

1 2 3 4
One Two Three Four
Tell me that you love me more
Sleepless, long nights
That was what my youth was for

Oh teenage hopes are lying at your door
Left you with nothing
But they want some more

Oh, oh, oh
You're changing your heart
Oh, oh, oh
You know who you are

Sweetheart, bitter heart
Now I can't tell you apart
Cosy and cold
Put the horse before the cart

Four teenage boys
Who have tears in their eyes
Too scared to own up
To one little lie

Oh, oh, oh
You're changing your heart
Oh, oh, oh
You know who you are

One, two, three, four, five, six, nine, and ten
Money can't buy you back the love that you had then
One, two, three, four, five, six, nine, and ten
Money can't buy you back the love that you had then

Oh, oh, oh
You're changing your heart
Oh, oh, oh
You know who you are
Oh, oh, oh
You're changing your heart
Oh, oh, oh
You know who you are

Brandy Alexander
Though I'd like to be the girl for him
And cross the sea and land for him,
On milky skin my tongue is sand until
The ever distant band begins to play

He's my Brandy Alexander
Always gets me into trouble
But that's another matter
Brandy Alexander
He's my Brandy Alexander
Always gets me into trouble
But that's another matter
Brandy Alexander

Though I know what I love most of him
I'm walking on needles and pins
My addiction to the worst of him
He's the one that makes me sing

I'm his Brandy Alexander
Always get him into trouble
I hide that I am flattered
Brandy Alexander
I'm his Brandy Alexander
Always get him into trouble
I hide that I am flattered
Brandy Alexander

It goes down easy, easy
It goes down easy, easy
It goes down easy, easy...

Brandy Alexander...

Intuition
What gives what helps the intuition?
I know I’ll know
I won’t have to be shown
The way home
And it’s not about a boy
Although although

They can lead you
Break or defeat you

A destination known
Only by the one
Whose fate is overgrown
Piecemeal can break your home in half
A love is not complete with only heat

And they can tease you
Break or complete you

And it came a heat wave
A merciful save
You choose you chose
Poetry over prose
A map is more unreal than where you’ve been
Or how you feel
A map is more unreal than where you’ve been
Or how you feel
And it’s impossible to tell
How important someone was
And what you might have missed out on
And how he might have changed it all
And how you might have changed it all for him
And how he might have changed it all
And how you might have changed it all for him

Did I, did I
Did I, did I
Did I, did I
Did I, did I
Did I did I miss out on you?

Honey Honey
Honey honey, up in the trees
Fill the flowers deep in his dreams
Eat them out to sea by the east
Honey honey, food for the bees

Honey honey, out on the sea
In the Doldrums thinking of me
Me I'm driving thinking of he
Honey honey, not next to me

Even if he wanted to
Even if he wanted to
Even if he wanted to
Do you think he'll come back
Would he come back

Honey honey out on the sea
In the Doldrums waiting for me
Me in my boat searching for he
Honey honey, food for the bees

How My Heart Behaves
What grew
What grew
What grew and inside who
First so simple was the vow
Then the chorus sang about
Your shoulder
The mooring for me
Like water lost in the sea

The cold heart will burst
If mistrusted first
And a calm heart will break
When given a shake

I’m a stem now
Pushing the drought aside
Opening up
Fanning my yellow eye
On the ferry
That’s making the waves wave
Illumination
This is how my heart behaves

The cold heart will burst
If mistrusted first
And a calm heart will break when given a shake

(How her heart behaves)
The rain rain making me cry
(How her heart behaves)
Then the wind comes
Fanning my yellow eye
(How her heart behaves)
The waves wave the waves wave
This is how my heart behaves

A cold heart will burst
If mistrusted first
And a calm heart will break
When given a shake
The cold heart will burst
If mistrusted first
And a calm heart will break
When given a shake

What grew
What grew
What grew and inside who

Beirut's New Album Details

I came across this news item on billboard.com:

Michael D. Ayers, N.Y.

Blog-driven indie rock sensation Beirut is putting the final touches on the follow-up to 2006's "Gulag Orkestar," tentatively due in September. Twelve songs are being eyed to make the final cut for the as-yet-untitled set.

"I've finished what I'm capable of doing, and from here, I'm taking it to mixing," Beirut founder Zach Condon tells Billboard.com. "Owen Pallet [of Montreal group Final Fantasy] is going to help out with some string arrangements. The influences are coming from a different place; it's not heavily a Balkan aesthetic. I was listening to a lot of old French songs, but I'm taking it in my direction."

I was listening to "Postcards From Italy" yesterday on my Zen and then it came on at the bookstore I was in later that same day... it was a lovely reminder of how great that song is.

The Veils' Finn Andrews: +Sixeyes Interview

Finn Andrews is The Veils. From the moment major labels execs started waving five album deals in his fifteen year old face, he was on the path to leading his own band. At sixteen he left school and home in New Zealand to head for London to make music. 2004 saw the release of The Veils' debut, The Runaway Found. An album teeming with promise, it slipped under the radar of many who should have heard it. The album boasted the magnificently dreamy balladry of "Lavinia", a song that has wound itself about my core like a wild vine. The talent of Andrews staggered me when I heard the rest of the album and further more when I learned he was but twenty years of age. The sweeping romance of the imagery countered with Andrews cracking rasp, which could, and often did, rise with a feral grace, seduced many of us who are romantics at heart. The seduction continues with the second effort by Andrews and the new members of The Veils, Sophia Burn, and Liam Gerrard... the album is called Nux Vomica. Not as polished as The Runaway Found, production-wise, the new recording shows a growing confidence in Andrews as a songwriter. The ferocity unveiled on the debut is even more on show here in songs like "Not Yet", "Pan", "Jesus For The Jugular", and the title track, "Nux Vomica". And worthy successors to the lovely "Lavinia" are here as well, namely "Under The Folding Branches" and "House Where We All Live", the former being as romantic a song as Andrews has yet written. The only thing holding The Veils back from stardom is time, time to be heard, time to build an audience, and time to do things one at a time.

Finn Andrews was kind enough to answer some questions from an imaginary hammock on an imaginary dusty porch (when he wasn't worrying about time and space).

Tour dates and mp3s can be found below.

+SIXEYES INTERVIEW: The Veils' Finn Andrews
+Sixeyes:
Let's start at the beginning... what instrument did you first pick up, guitar? And is that first instrument the one that still gets the most attention today?

Finn Andrews: I played around on a lot of different instruments pretty early on - I learnt the didgeridoo when I was about 6, circular breathing and all. I’m currently trying to teach myself the Viola but I’m still pretty shit at it. I figured I’d at least be as good as John Cale within a few months but it really doesn’t seem to be working out like that.

+SE: I was wondering if anything you've read had inspired songs on the new album, or on the first album?

FA: I read an essay by Susan Sontag in the paper last week that made me want to build a fucking city. It had a line in it, I don’t know if it was one of hers or not but it went: “Time is so everything doesn’t happen all at once, and Space is so it doesn’t all happen to you.” That cheered me up immensely.

+SE: I've gotten the impression from some lyrics and older interviews that you may be a homebody, that you like the comforts of hearth and home. If that's true, or not, how do you handle the constant flux of life on the road?

FA: I’m really pretty perverse – I want whatever is furthest away from me most of the time it seems, so when we’re on the road all I really want to be doing is swaying in a hammock on some dusty porch, strumming a banjo and humming to myself.

It might have something to do with growing up between New Zealand and England that nothing ever seems like that far away.

+SE: In the performance videos I've seen of the band and in photos you've adopted an image that some have described as pseudo-Amish. Is this a deliberate look you've settled on, or just a happy result of your style choices? And if deliberate, why?

FA: It’s amazing the amount of attention a big hat gets you. I just like dressing up in weird shit from time to time - bands all look the fucking same and I just woke up one morning and thought “Fuck it, I’m putting on an enormous fucking hat.” I don’t wear it anymore though.

+SE: I want to know what drives you to create? And why did you decide to make another album? I mean it seems like such a hassle and all to get a record made unlike say a painter who only answers to himself and does all the work on his own.

FA: I think it depends entirely on how you look at it: I haven’t met many painters who are laughing it up at people in the music industry cause they’ve got it so much harder. Anyone that works in the arts kind of has to just accept pretty early on that it’s a fucking struggle getting anything of any real worth made and you better just get used to it.

+SE: Nick Launay, who produced Nux Vomica, had worked on your father's (XTC) albums in the past. Did you know Launay personally because of this connection?

FA: Yeah, sort of - I used to go round to his house a lot when I was a kid and I’d amuse myself in his living room while the adults were up stairs making loud noises in the studio. It’s kind of come full circle.

+SE: Did you always have the idea of making music as a way of life in the back of your mind because of your father's career as a musician?

FA: Oh God no! It looked like the most horrific fucking profession imaginable – I wanted to make films or be a fisherman or something.

+SE: How do you think his career affected your confidence towards music and making a living at it?

FA: It made me very aware very early on that nearly everyone in the record industry is a self-promoting chancer who will work you to death and try to steal your money. That’s proved pretty much spot on so far.

+SE: Is there an artist or musician whose work you hold aloft as a goal you're attempting to equal when you write? Someone you measure yourself against?

FA: I read an interview with Martin Sheen this morning and I kind of want to turn out like him in 40 years time. I love Devendra Banhart’s stuff. He’s so free in the music he’s making and he really excites me about the music that will be made tomorrow. I used to be very obsessed with musicians more of my father’s generation when I was in my teens, people like Patti Smith and Tom Waits, but now I feel a lot more towards those closer to my age, people whose work is blossoming all around us right now. People like Rufus Wainwright, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Antony & The Johnsons, Bill Callahan. They’re kind of all driving me nuts at the moment.

+SE: What does the rest of the year hold for you and the band?

FA: We’re actually moving to Oklahoma to squat in The Flaming Lips living room and rehearse a record. You know how it is. We’ll be there ‘til August and then hopefully there’ll be a new album out by the end of the year. I can’t wait.

The Child Ballads

I wrote this back in late November of 2005:

The promising band, Jonathan Fire*Eater, was made up of vocalist Stewart Lupton (above right), keyboardist Walter Martin, guitarist Paul Maroon, drummer Matt Barrick, and bassist Tom Frank. When they called it quits, Martin, Barrick, and Maroon reformed with Hamilton Leithauser to become The Walkmen. But what became of Stewart Lupton, JF*E's lead singer? It turns out he is still singing and writing, evidenced by the recent signing of his new band The Child Ballads to British label Loog Records.

The new band is comprised of D.C. native Stewart Lupton (vocals, guitar), Betsy Wright (vocals, wurlitzer, farfisa, violin), Hugh McIntosh (Drums), Tunde Oyewole (Bass), and Judah Bauer (Guitar).

Loog Records will release the Child Ballads track, "Cheekbones", as a single next month. In this song Lupton exercises a subdued drawl that recalls Mick Jagger as New Yorker. Lupton's singing is extremely appealing and is, rightly so, front and center in the mix, surrounded by the 60's urban jangle of the supporting players. A very nice little teaser for the promised early 2006 release on British imprint Loog Records. I am looking forward to this release as I loved the JF*E song, "When The Curtain Calls For You".

A few days ago I was browsing my music files for something to post and saw that Child Ballads song, "Cheekbone Hollows". I posted it (again) and subsequently got a question about the band. This prompted me to go searching for them online and I found a few things: their website is no longer functioning, their myspace is up-to-date, and they've finally released a recording on Loog Records. It's a six song EP called Cheekbone Hollows (pop. 1/2 life). I haven't had a lot of time with the songs, but it's what I would call a 'grower'. It needs time to find a home in the listener, although it's not difficult music... but then again, it certainly isn't lightweight radio pap either. Joining Lupton in the band are bassist Tunde Oyewole, Paul Arfield (rhythm guitar), John Melville (drums), Betsy Wright (keyboards, viola, vocals), Hugh MacIntosh (drums), and Judah Bauer (lead guitar).

THE VEILS TOUR DATES + MP3s

The band that released my favourite record last year and will release one of my favourites this year is the time shifting band, The Veils. With their sophomore effort, Nux Vomica, coming out in North America April 24th, the record which Europe has known for months and months (the band is based in London), will be reborn and the band will begin it's push to get it heard by new ears. Check the tour dates and get your tickets because this is the type of band that won't, I repeat, won't, be on the indie hipster radar. There's just much too much posturing and falseness in some of the young bands that scream outta the 'indie hipster hive' with an overpowering buzz for me to believe that The Veils' romantic and passionate sound would appeal to your average indie beekeeper. To paraphrase Muhammad Ali, The Veils 'sting like a butterfly and move like a bee'. I'm not sure if that makes sense, but it feels right to me.

Here's what the band sounds like live and below are the tour dates. Oh yeah, the band's leader, Finn Andrews, will be featured soon in an exclusive interview with +Sixeyes.

These mp3s are from a Black Session [#251] done for French radio, you hear the announcer at the beginning and/or end of some songs, but the quality is quite good and the performance should get you out the door to buy tickets. And these, save for the cover of course, are songs found on Nux Vomica.
