VIDEO: The Weakerthans: "Civil Twilight" + MP3s

The Weakerthans are John Samson's baby. His matter of fact nasal vocals are lent a heft through his novelist's eye for detail and his short story writer's editing skill. If you like, or love, the sparkle of John Darnielle's lyrics you have to give The Weakerthans a good listen.

Here's a video for Civil Twilight from the band's latest record on Epitaph Records,

The National 'Boxer': The Best Album of 2007

Abandon all hope ye who dream to be fawned over and lifted high upon loving shoulders, who wish to be touted as the best (better than the rest), who dream their music may one day cause young men to break a sweat and old men (that's me) to have hot flashes, who aspire to the lofty goal of sharing a stage and a nationally televised moment with a 'Mr David Letterman' (and being 'Sixeyes Best of The Year'. - it's pretty much the same thing, no?) For this year, the year of our Lord, Two Thousand and Seven, The National and their album, Boxer, are the best.

Well, that thing of being lifted upon loving shoulders, I don't mean that literally, there's just one of me and five of them, I could lift one, maybe one of the Dessners, they're not too.... wait, my backs acting up. It's just metaphorical, the shoulder lifting thing, but it's meant truthfully and honestly, this is the best album of the year! The band is at the top of their game with Boxer. There is always something to grab your ear, from the Dessner brother's guitar work, to the rhythm section of the Devendorf brothers (particularly Bryan's drumming), to singer Matt Berninger's lyrical imagery. Short, sharp lyrical phrases which needle and punch their way into you and yet are always wrapped in the soft leather of Berninger's vocal. These are just the parts, together their sum totals 'The Best Album of The Year'.

And yes, I do realize the year has a couple of months to go, but come on, have you heard the album?

Thank you and goodnight,

Sixeyes

The National and Kings of Leon: A Different Drummer

Just today I was listening to my mp3 player and The National and Kings of Leon came up repeatedly which made me realize how much drumming, or interesting drumming, can draw me into a song. The National are still touring in support of their great album, Boxer, and it was this record that I was listening to while working. Although songs like "Brainy" didn't cast a spell upon me right off the bat, after many, many listens, the drum patterns doled out by Bryan Devendorf, on "Brainy" in particular, simply began to mesmerize me. The effect isn't as powerful on some tracks from the Kings of Leon's latest record, Because of The Times, but Nathan Followill's playing adds a rhythmic edge to many of the songs... especially "McFearless".

Feist is now a drummer? Hey, Jack White!

When Feist toured Europe recently she brought along the enigmatic Bob Wiseman as her opening act. On the final night of Wiseman's supporting gig in Munich, Feist came out before her set to lend a hand and sat behind the drumkit to play (and sing) along with "You Don't Love Me" off of Wiseman's More Work Songs From The Planet Of The Apes. Bob is still touring Europe, visit his myspace for details and dates. Here's proof that Bob writes and plays a good song and that Ms Feist knows what to hit on a drumkit.

Radiohead Moves 1.2 Million Downloads of 'In Rainbows'

Gigwise.com reported through an anonymous 'source close to the band', that Radiohead moved something close to 1.2 million downloads of the new album, In Rainbows, and this report was posted the day after the downloads were made available. As most of you already know, everyone has the option of paying whatever they see fit when visiting this site to download the 160 bit-rate mp3s, including nothing at all. And seeing how the bit rate is so low, the amount you pay should be in line with that fact. You can also buy the heftily priced discbox while you are there on site for £40 UK, which is $81 US, or $79 CAN.

Or go here for mp3s and do a little searching.

Black Mountain New Album Details

(via billboard)

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. That old adage proved true for Black Mountain during the making of its sophomore album, "In the Future," due Jan. 22.

"We had tried like a year before to do some new stuff, but it just seemed that everyone was burnt out from touring," explains bassist Matt Camirand.

REM: "Until The Day Is Done" Debuts on CNN... WTF?

REM debuted a new song on CNN's Anderson Cooper 360º last night, now who is Anderson Cooper? I don't watch cable anymore, I mean I don't have cable anymore. After watching the trailer for the special, Planet In Peril, featuring REM's song, "Until The Day Is Done", I thought that Cooper would do himself and the planet some good by talking to David Suzuki, a Canadian environmental activist who has done just about all he could for the good of the planet. Anyway, we're here for the music and it's nothing to get excited about... and by 'it' I mean the new song. Did they phone this one in? Cooper's shiny hair is just as exciting, if not more so, than this song.

Planet In Peril airs October 23 - 24 9:00 pm

Interview: Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood

Radiohead, who digitally self-released their latest record, In Rainbows, yesterday, gave Gothamist some inside dirt when the band's Jonny Greenwood answered some questions.

How did the process of making In Rainbows differ from Hail to the Thief?

Greenwood:
It was more like earlier Kid A stuff, more based in studio experiments and trying out ideas and spending quite a long time. That's what we did with Kid A and Amnesiac.

What song on the album proved most difficult to finish?

Greenwood: Even ones that we finished quickly we spent a long time deciding if they were good enough. None of them were easy, actually. "Reckoner" kind of came together quickly.

Luke Temple Wants You To Design A Video

To fans, filmmakers, and aspiring filmmakers: Want to be the next Michel Gondry, Mark Romanek, or Anton Corbijn? This is your chance! Luke Temple wants you to design a video for a song on his newest album, Snowbeast. You can choose any song from Snowbeast and make a video. Go here to find a track you like and e-mailian.wheeler@themusebox.net for an MP3 file of the song. We’re looking for really creative ideas here... Stop motion, cheap animation, anything CHEAP and creative that captures the spirit of one of Luke’s songs.

The contest will run for six (6) weeks. After that time, Luke will hand select the winner himself. The selected video will be the OFFICIAL video for that song. The lucky individual will not only receive the honor and credit of making and directing an official video for Luke Temple, they’ll also receive two backstage passes to see Luke in the city of their choosing, a poster signed by Luke, and the winning video will be sent out to every major music website, blog, and several indie music video television shows. You’ll also get an IMDB (Internet Movie Database) credit for directing a Luke Temple video!
RULES:

Please send a video, or link to your video, to luketemplevideos@themusbox.net

We will accept submissions until November 15, 2007. Luke will choose the winner within two weeks, and we will contact you directly via e-mail. Please submit your entries in the form of an MOV file, and include the following:

Sondre Lerche will return to North American venues for a swath of solo tour dates beginning and ending in November. Get your wallets out and lay some cash down for Lerche for I can attest to the indisputable fact that he puts on a great show. October 2nd was the release date for the Dan In Real Life soundtrack that is simply oozing with Sondre Lerche music. As it states on his homepage, the album "features 11 new Sondre Lerche compositions, a duet with Regina Spektor, Sondre's cover of Pete Townshend's "Let My Love Open the Door", a Lerche-produced version of "Fever" by a Fine Frenzy as well as songs from Lerche's previous records featured in the film."
