Tokyo Police Club: CBC Radio3 Session MP3s

Canadian band, Tokyo Police Club, have received much lauded praise and interest for their very small (and very short) output thus far. That's just two EPs and 3 singles (plus one iTunes exclusive) and barely two years since the band formed, so will the hooks and smartly arranged music continue when they release their next effort on Saddle Creek in early 2008? I think it will.

Here's the band's CBC Radio session from last year:

Debbie Harry: New Solo Album MP3

Debbie Harry, the 62 year old icon for every female (and more than a few guys) who wants to be a rock star, has a new album titled Necessary Evil arriving this coming January. Most of you should know of Ms Harry from the world-wide success that greeted her work with seminal band, Blondie. If not... you've got some reading up to do. But now she has returned with a voice as youthful as her visage, offering her sixth solo work and first in 14 years!

"It's exciting to be doing this on my own, but chilling and weird at the same time," she admits. "In a way, I will be out there without a safety net. The comfort level with Blondie is great, but in most cases, the audience wants to hear the old music from us, rather than the future, and that is death for an artist. You have to keep moving forward."

Harry has an amazing voice, cool one moment and then warm and purring the next. She displays an elastic capacity with this, the first single off the new record, sounding like a sugary Patti Smith before slipping into the vocal persona she is famous for.

Yep, the new John Vanderslice effort, Emerald City, shows up on shelves tomorrow (I'll bet some indie stores have got it front and center already). You should buy it for many reasons:

1. It's a beautiful collection of songs.
2. It'll complete the set you've already acquired.
3. It's the most attractive CD package I've seen in a long while.
4. If you've got to pick one from this list, hell, it's a no-brainer.
5. And once again, JV's record has been produced by the very talented Scott Solter.

Now, finally, here's the fourth installment of Sixeyes' reposting of The National's White Sessions (there will be one more). Spoon's Britt Daniel Talks About 'Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga'

More Spoon for you guys. Just found on eMusic that they've done a interesting little piece with Britt Daniel, Spoon's front man, talking about several songs on the newly released, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. Here are a few choice excerpts from the mouth of Britt Daniel... while you're waiting for the band's website to be updated (come on already, jeez):

On “Don’t Make Me a Target”:
This song is essentially about talking to the Big Guy in charge, asking Him to not make things any worse. I came up with it a while back, when I was writing songs for Gimme Fiction.

On “The Ghost of You Lingers”:
It was our choice to make this the first song leaked to the blogs. When there’s a band that’s been around for a while and I hear them doing something I’ve never heard them do before, that kind of excites me. It gets me way more intrigued than, say, hearing a song that sounds exactly like the record before. That was the thinking here: put something out there that will make even people that know us say, “Hey, this is exciting.” The problem is that the very next day, the whole album leaked, so that kind of killed that plan.

The New Pornographers: Myriad Harbour + My Rights Versus Yours: MP3s

So, here it is, my favourite track from the Canadian supergroup The New Pornographers upcoming album, Challengers. "Myriad Harbour" is one of three Dan Bejar (Destroyer) songs found on the upcoming record and after countless listens this is my pick as best song on the disc, with another Bejar tune "Entering White Cecilia" also in the top five. I don't know what to say, except that Mr Newman better pull his socks up and knock out a stunner of a solo album in the next year, or so, to keep up with Mr Bejar. In fact, this record was very disappointing in the beginning, except of course for this Bejar song, it's just that not much of Carl Newman's input was mainlining it's powerpop sugar into my creaky old veins, but that's slowing changing with time. Lead off track "My Rights Versus Yours" wouldn't be out of place on Newman's great solo debut, The Slow Wonder (until the band begins to join in), and Kathryn Calder's first foray singing lead on a track, "Failsafe", is another standout with it's dreamy bed of tremeloed guitar and Calder's easy, relaxed vocal. What falls a little flat are the Neko Case songs, "Go Places" and "Challengers", and the songs that wouldn't be out of place on earlier New Pornos records, songs like "All The Things That Go To Make Heaven And Earth" and "Mutiny, I Promise You". What makes Challengers different than earlier albums is that here the best songs will emerge after many listenings, I think. Since the band's debut album, Mass Romantic, the best songs jumped up and spun you round on first listen, with Challengers it appears that Newman's pop craftsmanship is maturing and it will take a few more sips of this wine to appreciate it fully. Now, regarding my comment that Newman had better pull his socks up and knock out a stunner of a solo album to keep up with Mr Bejar... I guess I've come to a better understanding of this new record while writing this, but I hope he does deliver a stunning solo album, I love The Slow Wonder much more than any New Pornos disc. But it's funny how Bejar's lyric says "I said to Carl look up for once, see just how the sun sets in the sky", funny because I think that Carl Newman spent a lot of time looking up with past records, but with Challengers is now spending more time looking inward, resulting in a more challenging, although rewarding listen. After saying all this, I have to add that I doubt this record will outsell any other New Pornos album by a large margin. This isn't the one that will take them to the next level commercially, but it will satisfy the patient listener.

Spoon: "The Underdog" Video

I like this video, even if I gave up on videos back in the early nineties, I could watch this one again... although that could be because the song is so good. Let me put it this way, the video does not detract from the song.

Julian Carax

Julian Carax (if that is his real name) is a French musician who happens to have the same name as a fictional writer in a best-selling book of fiction titled, The Shadow of the Wind. His new EP, Turnpike, boasts the song,"Under The Sun", and this is the Julian Carax song which makes me feel good. It's a strong melody, rising and falling, definite in it's pattern while the vocal is soft and nearly timid, although this is Carax's style, I believe. Another song of his, "Turnpike", is also very good... skittering drums, a repeating piano figure building tension, and strings swelling around the music. His vocals have an unmistakable European flavour, reminding me of many Swedish singers who record in English. And not surprisingly, perhaps, is the fact that he recorded this EP in a true studio setting in Sweden (all previous recordings were done at home). Maybe it's merely the sound of an accent being stretched and pulled, elongated to meet the demands of the melody. Whatever it is, it's appeal is evidenced by the many, many European artists finding success in North America today (in fact, his myspace page says he's moving to Canada in the near future, so he may join the swelling ranks of artists finding success). Julian Carax should be no exception, these two songs are strong pieces of indie pop that you should listen to and buy (the buy link is just below).

THE VEILS: New Tour Dates + Brand NEW Song!

While UK-based band, The Veils, have spent most of the past month discovering that a) the US and Canada is one helluva big place, b) some rattlesnakes are pretty nice guys (or Finn has a horseshoe up his arse! Btw, you guys should play the Horseshoe next time you come to Toronto... no, seriously), and c) just how addictive those damn caffeinated energy drinks can be, and even though Friday night was the final date on their tour, they've added MORE! IT WAS JUST THE FIRST LEG! THERE'S ANOTHER LEG!! This should make getting about much easier on the band (having two legs and all). And after a week and a half at a quiet house somewhere in Oklahoma they'll start touring again... yes, it's true, the dates don't lie. And there are more dates to come, so as soon as I hear anything, I'll let you know.

But now I've some bad news to pass on... Liam Gerrard (that's Liam in the pic above, shirtless with his finger up Henning's rear... don't ask) has left the Veils. It was on good terms and things will move on for the band, with recording and these upcoming tour dates filling their schedule.

THE DATES
Jul 11 - Dallas, TX - Club Dada
Jul 12 - Austin, TX - Stubbs Jr
Jul 13 - Houston, TX - The Mink
Jul 20 - Oklahoma City, OK - LIT
Jul 27 - Tulsa, OK - D-Fest w/ Flaming Lips/Shiny Toy Guns/The Format and more
Aug 1 - Lawrence, KS - Replay Lounge
Aug 3 - Oklahoma City, OK - LIT
Aug 13 - Phoenix, Arizona - The Paper Heart
Sep 10 - New York, New York - Bowery Ballroom

Here's a special bonus for all, this is a new song that the band has been playing during the tour. When they played it around two and a half weeks ago in Toronto, Finn didn't give a title, all he said was it was a new song, but in this live recording from their Seattle show at Crocodile Cafe he call it "Fearless Fly". And I loved it. Loved it live and love it still.
