THE SHEPHERD'S DOG Lyrics
1. "Pagan Angel And A Borrowed Car"
Love was a promise made of smoke
In a frozen copse of trees
A bone cold and older than our bodies
Slowly floating in the sea
Every morning there were planes
The shiny blades of pagan angels in our father's skies
Every evening I would watch her hold the pillow
Tight against her hollows, her unholy child
I was still a beggar shaking out my stolen coat
Among the angry cemetery leaves
When they caught the king beneath the borrowed car
Righteous, drunk, and fumbling for the royal keys

Love was a father's flag and sung like a shank
In a cake on our leather boots
A beautiful feather floating down
To where the birds had shit on empty chapel pews
Every morning we found one more machine
To mock our ever waning patience at the well
Every evening she'd descend the mountain stealing socks
And singing something good where all the horses fell
Like a snake within the wilted garden wall
I’d hint to her every possibility
While with his gun the pagan angel rose to say
"My love is one made to break every bended knee"

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

2.
"White Tooth Man"
Said the plain clothes cop to the beauty queen
“I’ve seen nothing but a spoke in a wheel”
So she gave up her crown to a kid with a crutch
And they both felt cheated after closing the deal
And the white tooth man, I ran with him
Got all cut up from pissing out in the weeds
And a fight upstate with a broken blade
And a wife whose finger never wanted a ring

Said the plain clothes cop to the Indian chief
“I’ve made nothing but an honest mistake”
The postman cried while reading the mail
And we all got trampled in the Christmas parade
And the white tooth man who sold me a gun
A map of Canaan and a government bond
Said, “I love this town, but it ain’t the same”
The ski mask ripped as he was putting it on

Said the plain clothes cop to the holy ghost
“I’ve heard nothing if it wasn’t the wind”
And we all got sick on a strip club meal
While the statehouse was frying all the witches again
So the white tooth man with his kids in the car
And a wad of money that was already spent
Said, “I love my dog but she just ran away
She’ll keep running like the world never ends”

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

3.
"Lovesong of the Buzzard"
In the failing light of the afternoon
Lucy in the shade of the dogwood blooms
Yesterday the solace of a poison fish
Tomorrow I'll be kissing on her blood red lips

No one is the saviour they would like to be
The lovesong of the buzzard in the dogwood tree
With a train of horses laughing through the traffic line
And the cradle's unimaginative sense of time

Springtime and the promise of an open fist
A tattoo of a flower on a broken wrist
Lucy tells me jokingly to wipe her brow
With a pocket map to heaven and the sun goes down

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

4.
"Carousel"
Almost home
When I missed the bottom stair
You were braiding your gray hair
It had grown so long
Since I'd been gone

And the perfect girls
By the pool, they would protest
The cross around their necks
But our sons were overseas
And we all know about the hive and the honey bees

Almost home
With an olive branch and a dove
You were beating on a Persian rug
With your bible and your wedding band
Both hidden on a TV stand

And the cruel wind blew
Every city father fell
Off the county carousel
While the dogs were eating snow
All our sons had sunk in a trunk of Noah's clothes

Almost home
We got lost on our new street
While your grieving girls all died in their sleep
So the dogs all went unfed
A great dream of bones all piled on the bed

And the cops couldn't care
When that crackhead built a boat
And said, "Please, before I go
May our only honored bone
Be the kinship of the kids and the riot squad"

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

5.
"House by the Sea"
There is a house by the sea
Two jealous sisters, they're waiting for me
And one is laid on the floor
And one is changing the locks on the doors
And I've been buying the time on my knees
And I've been selling their blankets to bleed (on)

Around the house by the sea
The scent of roses and raspberry leaves
And there is smoke in my clothes
Too much time with just smoke in my nose
And I've been making the meaning they lack
And I've been burning that book they come back too

There is a house by the sea
And an ocean between it and me
And like the shape of a wave
The jealous sisters will sing on my grave
And I've been living to run where they led
And I've been dying to rise from their bed
And I've been sparing my neck from their chain
And they've been changing the sound of my name
And I've been swimming to them in my sleep
And I've been dreaming our love and our freedom

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

6.
"Innocent Bones"
Cain got a milk-eyed mule from the auction
Abel got a telephone
And even the last of the blue-eyed babies know
That the burning man is the color of the end of day
And how every tongue that gets bit always has another word to say

Cain bought a blade from some witch at the window
Abel bought a bag of weed
And even the last of the brown-eyed babies see
That the cartoon king has a tattoo of a bleeding heart
There ain’t a penthouse Christian wants the pain of the scab, but they all want the scar
How every mouth sings of what it’s without so we all sing of love
And how it ain’t one dog who’s good at fucking and denying who he’s thinking of

Cain heard a cat tumble limp off the rooftop
Abel heard his papa pray
And even the last of the black-eyed babies say
That every saint has a chair you can borrow and a church to sell
That the wind blows cold across the back of the master and the kitchen help
There’s a big pile of innocent bones still holding up the garden wall
And it was always the broken hand we learned to lean on after all
How God knows if Christ came back he would find us in a poker game
After finding out the drugs were all free but they won't let you out the door again

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

7.
"Wolves (Song of the Shepherd's Dog)"
Wolves by the road
And a bike wheel spinning on a pawn shop wall
She leaned on her coloured hair
Like a butterfly wing in a summer rainfall
And the roll on the kitchen floor
Some fucker with a pocketful of foreign change
Song of the shepherd’s dog
A pitch in the dark in the ear of the lamb who was going to try to run away
Whoever got that brave?

Wolves in the middle of town
And the chapel bell ringing through the wind-blown trees
To wave to the butcher’s boy with the parking lot music everybody believes
And then out like a dying bird in the ?? in the corner of the penny arcade
Song of the shepherd’s dog
Waiting around the jack call of the rooster
On the rooftop waiting for day
And ain’t nobody’s gonna say

Wolves at the end of the bed
And a postcard hidden in her winter clothes
She beat in the back of a truck
To the trailers when we trying to find the bullet hole
And then run down the canopy rows
Some mother and a baby with a cross to nail
Song of the shepherd’s dog
Little brown flea in the bottle of oil for your woolly wild hair
You'll never get him out of there

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

8.
"Resurrection Fern"
In our days we will live
Like our ghosts will live:
Pitching glass at the cornfield crows
And folding clothes

Like stubborn boys across the road
We'll keep everything:
Grandma's gun and the black bear claw
That took her dog

When sister Laurie says, "Amen"
We won't hear anything:
The ten-car trains will take that word
That fledgling bird

And the fallen house across the way
It'll keep everything:
The baby's breath
Our bravery wasted and our shame

And we'll undress beside the ashes of the fire
Both our tender bellies wound in baling wire
All the more a pair of underwater pearls
Than the oak tree and its resurrection fern

In our days we will say
What our ghosts will say:
We gave the world what it saw fit
And what'd we get?

Like stubborn boys with big green eyes
We'll see everything:
In the tender shade of the autumn leaves
And the buzzard's wing

And we'll undress beside the ashes of the fire
Our tender bellies are wound around in baling wire
All the more a pair of underwater pearls
Than the oak tree and its resurrection fern

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

9.
"Boy With A Coin"
A boy with a coin he found in the weeds
With bullets and pages of trade magazines
Close to a car that flipped on the turn
When God left the ground to circle the world

A girl with a bird she found in the snow
Then flew up her gown and that's how she knows
That God made her eyes for crying at birth
Then left the ground to circle the Earth

A boy with a coin he crammed in his jeans
Then making a wish he tossed in the sea
Walked to a town that all of us burn
When God left the ground to circle the world

:::::::::::::::::::::::::

10.
"The Devil Never Sleeps"
Dreamin’ again of a train track ending at the edge of the sea
Big black cloud was low and rolling our way
Dog at the barbed wire barkin’ at my buzz-cut friends
Friend with a switch blade shinin’ in the summer rain
No one on the corner had a quarter for the telephone
Everybody bitchin’ there’s nothing on the radio

Dreamin’ again of a city full of fathers and their white clothes
Chatterin’ boys and a chicken at the choppin’ block
All of us lost at the crosswalk waitin’ for the other to go
Didn’t find the field but boy you’re really waterlogged
Someone bet a dollar that their daddy wasn’t comin’ home
Everybody bitchin’ there’s nothing on the radio

Dreamin’ again that it’s freezin’ and my mother’s in a flower bed
Long dead rows of daffodils and marigolds
Changin’ her face like a shadow on the ground
(can't tell what this line is - CAN YOU HELP OUT?)
No one lives forever and the devil never sleeps alone
Everybody bitchin’ there’s nothing on the radio

:::::::::::::::::::::::::

11.
"Peace Beneath the City"
Here’s a prayer for the body buried by the interstate
Murder of a soldier, a tree in a forest up in flames
Black valley, peace beneath the city
Where the women hear the washboard rhythm in their bosom when they say,
"Give me good legs and a Japanese car and show me a road”

Sing a song for the bodies buried by the riverbank
A well-dressed boy and a pig with a bullet in the brain
Black valley, peace beneath the city
Where the white girls wander the strip mall, singing all day,
“Give me a juggernaut heart and a Japanese car and someone to free"

Sing a song for the body buried like a keepsake
Mother of million mouths with the very same name
Black valley, peace beneath the city
Where the women tell the weather but never ever tell you what they pray
They pray, "Give me a yellow brick road and a Japanese car and benevolent change"

:::::::::::::::::::::::::

12.
"Flightless Bird, American Mouth"
I was a quick wet boy
Diving too deep for coins
All of your straight blind eyes
Wide on my plastic toys
And when the cops closed the fair
I cut my long baby hair
Stole me a dog-eared map
And called for you everywhere

Have I found you?
Flightless bird, jealous, weeping
Or lost you?
American mouth
Big bill looming

Now I’m a fat house cat
Cursing my sore blunt tongue
Watching the warm poison rats
Curl through the wide/white fence cracks
Kissing on magazine photos
Those fishing lures thrown in the cold and clean
Blood of Christ mountain stream

Have I found you?
Flightless bird, brown hair bleeding
Or lost you?
American mouth
Big bill, stuck going down

You've heard about this one haven't you? Journalist and friend Michael Azzerad's conversations with Kurt Cobain turned into a documentary that's getting raves from critics across the continent. Orba Squara

I heard of this New York based outfit as the unsigned band (actually a one man band) whose song, "Perfect Timing (this morning)", was on the iPhone commercial, a commercial that I had never seen (I don't watch a lot of TV), but after seeing the spot on Youtube, I don't think the song was prominent enough to have caught my ear in the first place (the ad ends before the vocal begins). That's not a putdown of the song itself, far from it, Orba Squara, or Mitch Davis, the man behind the name, has a lot of personality in his music and deserves any attention coming his way for the music he's written and recorded for his debut, sunshyness. You can hear him reveling in the chiming and ringing of the instruments, you can nearly see him smiling, if not hear him, when listening to songs like "Warm Fuzz" and "My Favorite Song". This joy in organic sounds may spring from Davis' abandonment of the electronic gear he was previously playing for the natural beauty of acoustic instruments, which move the air with wood and metal, plus the album's cozy, personal vibe surely emanates from the fact that he was recording these songs for himself. But we wouldn't be hearing of him if he'd kept them to himself, for he then handed out copies to friends and when a copy eventually made it's way to Universal Music Publishing, Davis found himself with four songs licensed by Universal well before the record's self-release date of October 9th. The four being the aforementioned iPhone jingle, plus a new song titled "Brand New Day" which appears in the film comedy "Wedding Daze", and another couple will appear in ads for Goodyear and telecom group Orange. This may all become a little dizzying for the 37 year-old songwriter who pens tracks with titles like "Sunshine", "Stay Around", "So Comfortable", and "Sky Cloud Winter Breeze", but I, for one, hope he keeps his feet on the ground and his music unplugged.

Here's an mp3 from the upcoming album, sunshyness, a song that will surely become someone's favourite song.

"Hey man, you’re singing my favorite song
Hey friend, you’re bringing back better times
Hey there, you know just what to say
Hey kid, that’s just what I needed today"

Bob Wiseman

With Bob Wiseman opening for Feist on her European dates, I thought I'd throw up this opening from my post on him from back in November 2005, with link to the whole post... along with a couple of mp3s, of course.

Bob Wiseman, free and legal mp3s available below

Bob Wiseman almost seems 'too' funny for his own good or at least his music's good (but not too Canadian, how could that possibly happen?). I mean that he would likely receive more attention and admiration from that quadrant of the music media with hyperbolic tendencies if his eccentric, formidable talent were framed at all times in a downtrodden, serious urban light (a là the Godfather of eccentric urban hipsters, Tom Waits). But Wiseman, I believe, follows his muse (serious or lighthearted) from whatever or wherever it springs (He has even done some film and television scoring). But when he does put his talent to a serious inspiration what appears is often lovely and touching. That is not to dismiss the more humorous songs he has penned... Wiseman is a funny guy. A multi-instrumentalist, he obviously has an affinity for any instrument with keys, such as organ, piano, toy piano, accordion, melodica, they all sing under Wiseman's fingers.

Feist Adds Tour Dates + MP3s

Canada's latest addition to it's list of female superstars (Celine, Shania, Avril, uhh... Anne Murray. I think I might have missed a few between Avril and Anne), Leslie (Jesus Christ it's Leslie Feist!) Feist, has made plans to visit even more cities on her endless world tour. She'll bring her well-oiled The Reminder show to a city near you sometime soon. If you don't see your hometown listed yet, just wait an hour, Ms Feist is always on the move. Oh yeah, all her upcoming European dates will benefit from the always entertaining Bob Wiseman, who'll be opening.

The Seedy Seeds

The Seedy Seeds snagged me when I first heard "The Little Patton". It's childlike simplicity brings a smile to the face (where else would it bring a smile?) and it's sing-song melody will squeeze a song from the lips of most every listener. Mike Ingram and Margaret Weiner are The Seedy Seeds and they supposedly began a band to force themselves to learn to play the instruments they owned. Well, whatever works, they've got some fun stuff here on the record, Change States, and Margaret Weiner's got the kind of voice that I will continue to try and discover what's so appealing (okay, Mike sings too, and acquits himself quite well, so there).

DCFC's Gibbard Contributes to Cobain Documentary

Death Cab for Cutie's main man, Ben Gibbard, has contributed new music to the rock doc of Kurt Cobain's conversations with journalist and friend, Michael Azerrad, titled Kurt Cobain: About A Son. That film's soundtrack was released yesterday on Barsuk and on it Gibbard's covers "Indian Summer" by K Records band Beat Happening.

The About A Son soundtrack also features previously released tracks from Mudhoney, the Melvins, Mark Lanegan, and more, as well as Cobain faves like Iggy Pop, Half Japanese, David Bowie, R.E.M., and Leadbelly.

You can listen to a 30 sec clip of Gibbard's version below and here's some more Gibbard for you (from 2003's Home: Volume 5) along with the original song by Beat Happening.

Viarosa 'Where The Killers Run'

Viarosa, a British band, make good use of leader Richard Neuberg's voice, a rich instrument that never strays into excess. In fact its restraint displays Viarosa's obvious axiom (obvious to me) that the music comes first. The stretched out ache of Josh Hillman's violin (Hillman is also a member of Willard Grant Conspiracy) adds a bittersweet edge to the songs, like honey squeezed from a lemon. There's a vague Nick Cave vibe here, in that the music can deliver an odd mix of internal ache and external vastness, like sorrow haunting from the past, or from across the unforgiving ocean.

Viarosa, together for just over six years, saw their debut full length, Where The Killers Run, re-released last November 20th in the UK and across Europe and US indie, Tarnished Records, released the album this past May stateside. You can stream four tracks from an upcoming record, Righteous Path, at one of their two myspace pages -- try this one for the new stuff and here's the other myspace page.

I like a term I found on a PR firm's site describing the band's sound as 'country noir'. That doesn't come close to capturing the band, but I like that term, it reminds me of Jim White. See for yourself through the mp3s offered below. This is beautiful music which melds elements of indie rock, celtic, and alt-country music... or, I could just say, this is major talent working in a minor key.

BEIRUT: Takeaway Show #64

Zach Condon loves Paris. He would like to live there, so it's no surprise that he and the band would do a Takeaway Show. The Takeaway Shows are videos of, typically, indie bands playing live in odd places. They've got a great impromptu feel, check out the videos of The Shins wandering about Paris and singing songs. Go here to check out all the Takeaway Shows and go here to see Beirut play two new songs, "Nantes" and "Penalty". Oh, yeah, the Takeaway guys are now in New York shooting 13 videos with Beirut, one for each track on the upcoming release, The Flying Club Cup.

The Flying Club Cup - Visit the website set up for the new album and watch the latest video shot September 8th of Beirut performing "Nantes" in Brooklyn. You have to see this video, the one done in Paris pales in comparison.

ARTS & CRAFTS SIGN THE STILLS TO WORLDWIDE DEAL

Montreal's The Stills have inked a worldwide deal with Toronto's ever expanding indie label, Arts & Crafts. The band is now set to enter the studio once more with Gus Van Go behind the board. The Stills, (Tim Fletcher, Dave Hamelin, Oliver Corbeil, Liam O’Neil, and Julien Blais) will celebrate the signing with two nights at Toronto's Lee's Palace on November 23rd and 24th. Get your tickets now, more dates below.

The band's Tim Fletcher posted this on the band's homepage: "It is with unrivaled joy, and with tremendous feelings of love that we, The Stills, join forces with friends and family as the newest members of the Arts & Crafts label. To each member of this family we would first like to say how proud we are to find ourselves at your sides; an honour, and a privilege. With so many of you already close friends for years now, it could not feel more right and natural. It might very well be impossible to find a warmer, more welcoming, inspiring home. And all is very timely as well. We are rejuvenated by this union."

Josh Mease

I wanted to title this post 'Josh Mease: "Start Over" (no, not really, just continue... please!), but that's a little long and convoluted for a post title, so 'Josh Mease' it is.

Josh Mease's sunny-go-lucky melodies can't be pinned down to one specific era, present or past, but when I listen I sometimes hear, or feel, an overwhelming golden glow from '70s AM radio. But it's of no consequence where the songs come from, or what they resemble, not when the music itself is so good. Mease has a soft relaxed way around a strong melody and that alone should be enough to spur you, the reader, to listen and then seek out more from him.

And as I stated earlier, please continue, Mr. Mease.

Susheela Raman: "Voodoo Chile" Cover

Susheela Raman has an amazing voice, so warm and flexible you will find yourself lost in it, although that effect may be better experienced by listening to something other than a cover song. But that's what I've got for you, her live performance on French radio of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile", a song which is found on her latest record 33 1/3, an album of studio recorded covers.

Between The Pine: "Shoot Me In The Spine"

I've written about Jim Diotte several times before, his music, under the name Between The Pine, has gone largely unrecognized by media and bloggers, so I've got to ask (okay, I'm asking all who've heard his music), "What the hell is wrong with you?". Out of the reams of crap that are shoved down the throats of bloggers like myself and those of the music media, by PR folk, record labels, and over ambitious bands, it's the stuff like this that makes the 'force feeding' worthwhile. I've been listening to Between The Pine's music for about two years and today it really struck me how well songs like "Shoot Me In The Spine" stand up (there's an unintentional pun there, although if it was a brilliant pun I'd surely say it was intentional). The sound isn't 'big studio 'polished, we're talkin' lo-fi, but the music outshines the limits of basement recording by a long shot.

Terry Lee Hale

I had never come across Terry Lee Hale's music before and that's a shame because I like what I've heard, so far. Now this fella has been banging away at his guitar and the craft of songwriting for some time, with eleven albums under his Texas belt, and just plain living with something close to 54 years of sun and rain beating down on his graying head. His latest release Shotgun Pillowcase, grabbed my attention simply with it's title, but it's what's imprinted upon the disc that you should care about and spend some time with. Hale's sound brings to mind a joining of two solo musicians I'm familiar with, Alabaman Jim White and Californian Chuck Prophet. Hale's music isn't country (and neither is White's or Prophet's). Although what you hear may be a faint echo of that genre which has been condensed and filtered through a writer whose vision has found it's target and whose writing is tight, concise, and highly personal.

Hale's a very talented musician whose songs on Shotgun Pillowcase (he does a couple of covers, one being Blur's "No Distance Left To Run") seem to breathe easily with wonderful arrangements and perfect flourishes such as Hale's handling of guitars, Dobro, glockenspiel, harmonica and more... plus additional musicians filling out the sound with trumpet, musical saw, melodica, clarinet and others.

Shotgun Pillowcase was produced and recorded by Chris Eckman (The Walkabouts, Chris & Carla, Midnight Choir, Shilf) and mixed by Tucker Martine (Jesse Sykes, Laura Veirs, Jim White, The Long Winters).
