Scott Matthew

Australian native and Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Scott Matthew is a wonderful mix of Devendra Banhart and Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons. Now that combination may sound like music which may be alienating to many people, but it isn't at all. As I stated earlier it's a 'wonderful' combination of these two artists; the otherworldly quality which Antony lives and breathes and pours out through his voice and that inexplicable charisma that new folk icon Devendra Banhart wears like an unselfconscious child. In Matthew's music these are brought together in a form much more accessible to your average music listener, but I may hear it this way as a result of my having tastes that could be termed 'slightly askew'.

Matthew gained much deserved attention for his contributions to the cutting-edge sex comedy/drama Shortbus (2006), both musically and on screen, but that film, like his music, lives in the sadly overlooked genre labeled 'indie'. It has surely gained him a new audience, but there's always room for more and so here comes his full length self-titled debut on Glitterhouse. Working with acoustic instruments (piano, guitar, violin, ukulele, bass, drums) allows the honesty of Matthew's voice to shine and float, within and above, the instrumentation, whereas electric and computerized sounds would simply weigh down his vocal gift, and therefore detract from the songs. Although that could possibly be gotten around by utilizing backup singers and or doubletracked vocals, although to me that wouldn't be the same Scott Matthew, the singer whose songs, and singing, remind me of Antony and Devendra. Two Matthew originals that appeared on the Shortbus soundtrack show up on this new record, with one, "Little Bird", being the same version, and I can't argue with his decision to include that one here, it's hard to imagine a better take. The record offers up a different take of "Upside Down" though, but sadly it doesn't include my favourite song from the soundtrack, "Language" (but if you go all out and purchase the vinyl version of the album, there are two bonus tracks, one of which is "Language"). What is most apparent, once you've grown accustomed to Matthew's voice, is his love of, and gift for, penning classic pop melodies and delivering them in his own quietly personal way. I recommend, highly, this album, this music, and this musician.

Wilco are currently thrilling the masses Down Under (does that sound really wrong, or not?), but they'll share some of that love beginning in late April with a flurry of dates in the US and one lonely date smack dab in the middle of Canada. This is one professional outfit, not many bands sound as good as Wilco do live, just download some of the tracks from this post, or this one, and you'll be a believer.

Sixeyes: The Raconteurs Reveal Consolers of The Lonely Tracklist

March 25th is the day, hell, that ain't long, is it? The Raconteurs announced the other day that their latest record, Consolers of The Lonely, would be released on that very day in every format. I'm betting that White and Benson have got at least one "Steady As She Goes" on this new disc. Now most of you are familiar with Mr White and his Striped work, are you not? You surely know he's got a way with a song, but his fellow Detroiter, Brendan Benson, can write and sing a catchy tune as well.

Here's a sampling of some solo work:

Wilco: The Riviera, Chicago February 19th: Part 2

Wow! Part 1 of this Wilco show was very popular with you guys, so that makes me very happy to offer Part 2 from the band's February 19th performance in Chicago. The band brings out the horn section for this half of the show, I'd love to see them live with horns, but have only had the chance to see them once and on that night they weren't... uh.... horny? Nah, that doesn't sound right, does it?

Destroyer: 'Trouble In Dreams" Lyrics

Destroyer's 9th album, Trouble In Dreams, is released today on Merge Records, you can buy the record here. Not sure if the official release has a lyric sheet yet, so here's an attempt I found to decipher Mr Bejar's lyrical treats on this album. Some parts aren't very clear and are represented by a question mark.

If you've got any ideas or clues as to what these parts are, please throw up a comment to enlighten us all.

Trouble in Dreams Lyrics
"Blue Flower/Blue Flame"
Okay, fine, even the sky looks like wine
And everywhere I turn there’s
a new face in town stuck inside the well
Fresh hells to attend to
Blue flower/blue flame
A woman by another name is not a woman
Don’t know why
Don’t know when
A cathedral sick of the sky again says to it:
“Oh please, not now, will you just look at the time.
It’s standing still.”
Somewhere applause falls dead on the hill-side
Blue flower/blue flame
A woman by another name is not a woman
I’ll tell you what I mean by that
Maybe not in seconds flat, maybe not today
Blue flower/blue flame
A woman by another name is not a woman
I’ll tell you what I mean by that
Maybe not in seconds flat, maybe never
A gray ashen sadness rises like the sun
Oh well, it was time I decided to try this hotel...
Tulip has an inner animal

She’s in it for a good time
I was on the outs for a while, but now things are alright
I gave you a flower because foxes travel light
And a penny for your thoughts was never enough
Your head gets filled with that stuff
Your head gets filled with that stuff

"Dark Leaves Form A Thread"

Susan, the truth is
Sipping sherry, branded by moonlight’s
just a game people are playing tonight
Seriously, terror advances
So..
Sorry if you should find me
Thinking of only the things that I need
I’ve been living in America, churches of greed
It’s sick
Nah, it’s cool
You go
I’ll stay
Perfectly at home with this dread
Dark leaves form a thread
So, should you still want me
You can find me down at the café
A little bit too busy being served
Sworn enemy of the waitresses there
A late September sunlight travels through her hair
It wants to be... seen
Nah, it’s cool
You go
I’ll stay
Perfectly at home with this dread
Dark leaves form a thread

"The State"
The state cut off my arms, the state tore my eyes with her nails
Hell just put on this earth a bad wind to trash the sails
of all you evil men
You should know somewhere in the night
there’s a blue broken drum playing dead (?)
and that’s good to know
The state toured (?) our hearts and the state exposed our hearts
And wounded me, gave me this bad knee, tore down my baby’s favorite tree
You should know somewhere in the night
there’s a blue broken drum playing dead
and that’s good to know
????????????????????
Ah, but maybe you should know
somewhere in the night there’s a blue broken drum playing dead

"Foam Hands"
True love regrets to inform you
There are certain things you must do
to perceive his face in the stains on the wall

I didn't know what time it was at all
I didn't know what time it was at all
Foam hands

Since you've been gone
Since you've been gone
Me and the King have been steadily growing apart
He lives down the hall

I didn't know what time it was at all
I didn't know what time it was at all
Foam hands

I'm not the kind
To tell you what is true
And what is totally out of control

I didn't know what time it was at all
I didn't know what time it was at all
Foam hands
Foam hands
Foam hands
Foam hands

"My Favorite Year"
You in white and me in gray go well tonight
So let’s linger here
This used to be my favorite palm tree
I was starving in that shit-house, the world
But now it’s gone and the whole point of everything's the moving on
Well, let’s see a calm and a storm and
okay, a star’s born - now let me just sit here ‘neath these omens (?)
On three and four and...
Beware the company you reside in (?)
Nicole, she, blasting on ecstasy (?)
Some movie’s spent her harbor (???)
circa 1993
It was a good year
It was a very good year
And now it’s gone
You say the whole point of everything’s the moving on
And I can’t help but feel somewhat opposed to this
Like she had been --- by fascists,
or in some small way, we’re all traitors to our own kind (?)

"Shooting Rockets from The Desk Of Night's Ape"
"Caution: Hot Ashes!" -- the girl says to her first kiss.
They stuck eternity inside a bird's fist just to watch it fly!
Just to make it go!
Just to let things slip away!

Don't ask me how I know, I just do...
Night Surgeon dons his robes to take apart a fellow amateur!

You may have heard it said one gives what one gets
Well, I didn't go out into the world just to be stung by a rich man's hornets...

Who amongst us has left these things undone,
And who let these animals into my kingdom?

A blind doe learns to work the rig...
A once-thin man turns into a pig...

The endless groves wherein my soul pukes the night away...

The problem as I see it --
I was messed up on a tangent that was wrong.
They mix 'em strong and I was partial to the feeling.
It is a terrible feast we've been stuffing our face on...
A terrible breeze from the East comin' on...

It bears the scent of our one hundred first kills...

You love her. You leave her.
You try to achieve a breadth of vision that she has from the start.
I got Street Despair carved into my heart...
I got Street Despair carved into my heart...

My dear, didn't you hear, a chorus is a thing that bears repeating.
The problem, as I see it is girls stay away from that shit!

Saw you in Swan Lake -- you were great!
Saw you down in Strathcona Square, devouring an After Eight
(who cares! I didn't mean it!)

For the third encore, you saw yourself in half... It was just you and your raft and this
crummy requiem...shooting rockets

Run or fly --
At some point I had to ask why..
I had to show you
a world not tethered to
Disasters but this would prove impossible...
I snuck a look inside your skull
and said --
Don't look now but Gretchen's seeing red again!"

The truth is a thing to coax out of its shell...
The truth is -- "On this, you and I are going to tangle"
Off, treacherous bliss!! Off!

First you come in all sweet
And then on tiger's paws you retreat
into a darkened nether shadow region.

And It'd be true what they say, were they to say --
"Why, yes, I dig the scourge!" It'd be true what they say, were they to say --
"Why, yes, I dig the scourge!"

It's not that I quit...
It's not that my poems are shit
In the light of the privilege of dreams...
"Alive", she cried once. Now "Alive," she screams...

Shooting rockets

Praise be the delightful muezzin, tending his flock
And
Praise be those alabaster hands running amok on your body..
They love you in spite of your lame scene...
We live in darkness. The light is a dream, you see...
We live in darkness. The light is a dream, you see...
We live in darkness. The light is a dream

Shooting rockets
Shooting rockets
Shooting rockets
Shooting rockets
Shooting rockets
Shooting rockets

"Introducing Angels"
Common scars brought us together
Common scars brought us together
Common scars brought us together
beneath an idiot moon
It comes too soon
Just plant Tulip and watch her bloom
Introducing Angels
Introducing Angels
Common scars brought us together
Common scars brought us together
Prominent scars brought us together
beneath the light of the moon
It’s not too soon
Flower-girl stalks the groom
A degenerate drunk on war,
grace should guide me Misty Poets
Introducing Angels
Introducing Angels

"Rivers"
See the sun crawling over the sky
Keep an eye on the surf and the sea and the sand
Don't you know every night is a stand-off with the fucking horizon?
You had a real time of it staring off into the light
Hands tied behind your back (?)
Steel chair (?) giving you shivers
You've always had a problem flowing down rivers

See the rain falling down from the sky
To its death smashed on the street in despair somewhere over there I swear
You had a real time of it staring off into the light
Hands tied behind your head, go

Stranded on the carousel
A cripple from the wreck
I was ringing a bell's neck looking for a sign
"Three stars means I'm losing you", says the night to one of her romances
The plane lands, everybody dances, it's fine

You had a real time of it staring off into the light
Hands tied behind your head
Steel chair (?) giving you shivers
You've always had a problem flowing down rivers
You've always had a problem flowing down rivers

"Leopard Of Honour"
The leopard of honor speaks to a crowd of the dead, shouting out for more
Suspiciously formed of the fast ones, you must always leave them wanting, he said
So we went down to the store
I saw you at the store
Now, in this regards, where do I start to keep us free - keep us apart?
I wanted to speak up, but it was not my place
Just some little shit in love with your eyes - a brute adrift in space
Pirouettes across the sky’s faces where you’ll find me
I was dead on my feet
Asleep for days
A stranger to the sun’s brutal gaze, ah yeah
Mother Superior’s the only one who calls
She says, “Hey, when are you ever coming over?”
Remove that wretched writing from the wall
It’s just more pictures again.
Jenny fell like a ton of bricks
Jenny fell like a ton of bricks
These are characterized as special times, and these are special times -- oh
Jenny fell like a ton of bricks
She travels in and out of you like some shade whistlin' Dixie
I didn’t know why, I guess I was high
Sick mansions freckle the skies, saying, "For Christ’s sakes, inhabit me"
I was dead on my feet
Asleep for days
A stranger to the sun’s brutal ways, ah yeah
Mother Superior’s the only one who calls
She says, “Baby, when are you ever coming over?”
Enjoy the wretched writing on the wall
Enjoy!
Will the leopard of honor speak? Will the leopard of honor speak?
Please stand, open your mouth, put out your hand and say
“I saw you standing there singing for money”
Going dum da da dum (etc.)

"Plaza Trinidad"
I was caught in the middle of a world war
This time it was dense light vs. the azure
I was high as a kite, I was never coming home tonight
And I couldn’t believe how loud it was
What devilry the source of this screaming
You and your dress forgave the birds of Plaza Trinidad
and soon you can watch them go
I was stuck inside a river’s flow, a corridor’s glow
sad year of an ocean - okay, it’s agreed I wasn’t much to look at then
Known mostly for the whites of my eyes
I had fucking escaped from her torn surface
And I couldn’t believe how loud it was
What devilry the source of this screaming
You and your dress forgave the birds of Plaza Trinidad
and soon you can watch them go
I was stuck inside a river’s flow, a corridor’s glow
a world at war! the kind of thing we’d seen before!
dense light vs. the azure
I was high as a kite, I was never coming home tonight
And I couldn’t believe how loud it was, how loud it was
And I couldn’t believe how loud it was, how loud it was
And I couldn’t believe how loud it was, how loud it was

"Libby's First Sunrise"
Libby’s first sunrise
You’ve been wasted from the day
of wandering and boozing and sleeping outside
Now the light holds a terrible secret
And now you know-whoa
That this is what you get
You’ve been wandering around
You’ve been fucking around
You’ve been wandering around
You’ve been fucking around - ah
Libby’s first sunrise
You’ve been wasted from the day
of wandering and boozing and sleeping outside
Playing the idiot all of your life
and this is what you get
Master of all you survey, but today
You’ve been wandering around
You’ve been fucking around
You’ve been wandering around
You’ve been fucking around - oh
Libby’s first sunrise
You’ve been wasted from the day
and now you know-whoa
Suffering idiots all of your life
And this is what you get
Now the light holds a terrible secret
The light holds a terrible secret
The light holds a terrible secret
The light holds a terrible secret
Ah, the light…
Oh, the light…
Oh, the light…
Oh, the light…

Death Cab For Cutie: "I Will Possess Your Heart" MP3

Death Cab For Cutie have released the first single from May 13th's Narrow Stairs. "I Will Possess Your Heart" is over 8 and a half minutes long with Ben Gibbard's vocal not arriving until the midway mark and with the band slowing building in volume and intensity. Not what you'd expect and from what I hear this isn't the only mega-track on the record.

How I wish you could see the potential
The potential of you and me

It's like a book elegantly bound

But in a language that you can't read, just yet
You gotta spend some time, love
You gotta spend some time with me

And I know that you'll find, love

I will possess your heart

i will possess your heart

Jack White and Raconteurs New Album Out EVERYWHERE March 25th

Here's the gist of the Press Here press release (Press Here Publicity is the PR firm for The Raconteurs and The White Stripes): The band appears to be doing all they can to prevent any loss of revenue following an inevitable leak of the record (although they say that isn't the reason*) by releasing the album in every format, including digitally, at the same time!

Here's the press release in full as found on the band's myspace page:

The Raconteurs are happy to announce that in one week's time their second album, entitled Consolers Of The Lonely, will be available EVERYWHERE Tuesday, March 25th. "Album" meaning: full length vinyl, CD and digital formats; and "everywhere" meaning: local mom and pop Indie retailers, corporate superstores, supermarkets, iTunes, Amazon, the band's own website and any other location that could get the record up and going this quickly (some places couldn't move this fast, so they will join in as soon as they can).

It contains 14 new recordings and is being released globally on Third Man Records in conjunction with our marketing/distribution partners, XL Recordings and Warner Brothers Records.

The album was mastered and completed in the first week of March. It was then taken immediately to a vinyl pressing plant. Then to a CD pressing plant. Then preparations to sell it digitally began. March 25th became the soonest date to have it available in EVERY FORMAT AT ONCE. The band have done no interviews or advertisements for this record before this announcement.

The purpose: to get the album to the fans as soon as possible and as we promised. We wanted to get this record to fans, the press, radio, etc., all at the EXACT SAME TIME so that no one has an upper hand on anyone else regarding it's availability, reception or perception.

With this release, The Raconteurs are forgoing the usual months of lead time for press and radio set up, as well as forgoing the all important "first week sales". We wanted to explore the idea of releasing an album everywhere at once and THEN marketing and promoting it thereafter. The Raconteurs would rather this release not be defined by it's first weeks sales, pre-release promotion, or by someone defining it FOR YOU before you get to hear it.

Another purpose was to also allow people to have their own choice as to exactly which format they would like to hear the album in IMMEDIATELY, rather than having to wait for their favorite format to become available. The band are also not releasing any version of this record that contains bonus tracks. Musically this album will be the same as the band created it no matter what format it is purchased in (The sound quality of each format however, is a different story. The Raconteurs recommend hearing it on vinyl, but the choice is of course up to the listener).

The band also prefer that fans buy the album as a whole instead of breaking up the tracks, but until iTunes and other digital services allows bands to release their albums with the option of NOT breaking it up, it will be sold in that fashion on those particular sites. On the band's website however, the album will be sold in its entirety as an mp3 at 320kb bit rate. Also in Japan, fans will be able to download the record via their mobile phones, as that is how a majority of recorded music is consumed there.

The reason we are announcing this release one week ahead of time is because of retail pre-ordering and stocking, information about this album's imminent release was bound to come to light and could be confusing to fans. *Also in the event that the record leaks, we didn't want this method of release to be seen as a REACTION to such a leak. It's not*. The actual worst thing about a leak is the usual poor sound quality, akin to watching a movie on a wristwatch instead of in a theater. Which for the album's creators is a bit of a letdown, but again, it is completely up to the listener.

There will be a video up on the internet for the first single, "Salute Your Solution", on the 25th as well, provided it gets edited in time. We just filmed it the other day!

We hope not to confuse anyone with too many options, or deny them the formats that they like best. The Raconteurs feel very strongly that music has worth and should be treated as such. Thank you to all those who respect music in this fashion, and thank you to our label partners for working with us to get this album to fans in as many formats as possible all at once.

Thank you, and we hope that you enjoy Consolers Of The Lonely.
Sincerely,
The Raconteurs

Wilco: The Riviera, Chicago February 19th: Part 1

Here's a treat for some of you Wilco fans out there. I say 'some of you' because a lot of you have likely got your hands on this already. The sound is very good, as this show, performed February 19th (the fourth night of a five night stand), was broadcast live on FM radio. The band played 31 songs that night and I'm going to break them up into two posts, the second will be put up sometime after Monday, as I'm heading into hospital for day surgery tomorrow. Here's the first half of the show at Chicago's Riviera club last month.

Enjoy it, spread the word and the music, and subscribe to my feed if you see fit.

Sixeyes Video: Modest Mouse: "Fly Trapped in a Jar" + MP3

Yes, it's been a while since Modest Mouse have appeared on this blog (the album was released almost exactly one year ago on March 20th), but they've got a new video for We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank track "Fly Trapped in a Jar"... and it's animated... and it'll be a helluva lot cheaper (and shorter) to watch this video then it would be to head to your favourite cineplex and watch Horton Hears A Who. So, you're welcome.

Throw Me The Statue: 'Moonbeams'

Throw Me The Statue may be an odd name, even for an indie pop band, but the name you should take note of here is Scott Reitherman, the driving creative talent behind TMTS's music. I've got to admit to taking a while cluing into how good their album Moonbeams is, a record that, although it came out little over a month ago, I've had a copy of for several months. There are 13 songs on the record just waiting to curl up in that part of your brain that soaks up music like a plant takes on water. These gems aren't standing up and waving their arms for all to see, they're more like that shiny piece of treasure glinting at you from a bed of sand under a foot of water. A discovered treat that you stand and marvel at while the summer sun wraps about the nape of your neck and across your shoulders, a sonic treasure that you can't not help but share with others. Great pop music for hungry fans... especially those stranded in the heavy, wet, grey snow of late winter.

I predict that the next musical work that Scott Reitherman puts his name to, will be recognized by many more people and you and your friends will finally talk about, and listen to, his music. Or you could be well ahead of the curve and do that now by running down to your local indie store and buying Moonbeams, or checking out this link to buy. So, do that, be a leader not a follower.

Hymns: 'Travel In Herds' March 11th

Hymns pepper their sophomore album Travel In Herds (March 11th Blackland Records) with touches throughout that recall The Band, Wilco, The Byrds, Tom Petty, and The Rolling Stones and those are just what comes to my mind when listening, your experiences will no doubt pull different references than I, although what most listeners will discover is that this album does not wear thin with repeated listens. The biggest difference between their strong debut, Brother/Sister, and this latest effort is singer/songwriter Brian Harding's improvement as a singer... he's more relaxed and, as a result, more confident, or is it the other way around? Well, they go hand in hand and give the band and it's new material a much stronger focal point to honk, twist, or sway about. A marked improvement their debut and one that you should seek out and hear.

Sandro Perri

I posted a review of Sandro Perri in early January and highly recommended his album Tiny Mirrors and now this post highly recommends Perri and his music. Yes, I know, that's pretty much the same thing, but no other music has impressed, appealed, and lingered in me as Perri's has since discovering it late last year. I am dying to see him perform live, he's got several dates in and around the Toronto area and I hope to get out to one of them over the next couple of months. Here's a chance for you to hear (over and over if you download the mp3) just how good Perri is; this song, "City of Museums", may be the best of the aforementioned album for it bears an incredibly lovely melody sung by a jazz trained, indie musician (Perri) who just may be a fan of iconic jazz trumpeter Chet Baker's tranquil, laid back, almost junkie-weary singing. There is something remarkably peaceful about Sandro Perri's music and voice in each and every song, so give a listen and spread the word about this artist.
