Andrew Cash: "Sometimes Everybody's Got To Cry" MP3

A couple of days ago I was listening to a podcast of Grant Lawrence's show on CBC's Radio3 (I downloaded a dozen or more mp3s of the show the other day and I've gotta say that Lawrence isn't exactly made for radio, but he keeps the talk to a minimum and the music to the max) and this song came on that instantly caught my ear. I listened carefully trying to decipher who was singing, it's close to Jason Collett but without the drawl and a tad softer, and I can remember thinking this is either some new young turk who will be trumpeted from every corner of the indie music internet, or it's some guy who's been at the game of singing and writing for 20 years or so. And, yeah, I was kind of disappointed that it wasn't some newcomer whose rise to fame I could envy, enjoy, and endlessly praise, but what the hell, it's a Canadian (bonus points right there) who's 45 years old. So, I sucked it up (you should do the same) and listened again with the foreknowledge that the singer was almost as old as me. Guess what? I still liked it.

Here's Andrew Cash and his song:

Andrew Cash's latest record is titled Murder = and it offers the song I'm talking about... buy the album here.

The Mohawk Lodge "Heart of Lovers" MP3

Many of you may not realize that I am nearly half a century old. Not sure why I am even mentioning this fact, I guess it's because I think about it a lot... not for long, I don't dwell on it, it just crosses my mind more often these days. Well, perhaps it's this song that has me mentioning that fact, because when I was a kid I loved music that would get me moving, you know, physically moving. A good hard tune that had guitars which sounded like they were being sawed at rather than strummed, a chorus and or bridge that required a strong shout rather than a pretty voice. Don't get me wrong, I like Nick Drake, or Sufjan Stevens, but a song such as The Mohawk Lodge's "Heart of Lovers" would have had me bouncing around the room nearly 40 years ago and the fact that it can make me feel, just feel mind you, like doing that very thing at my age, tells me this is one fine tune. So, thanks go out to Ryder Havdale and the other Lodge members. You can find them, and more, on Vancouver's White Whale Records (like the superb Culture Reject).

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds: Live at Vorst Nationaal, Belgium May 1 2008

Nick Cave and band are currently touring Europe and they gave the crowd at Vorst Nationaal in Brussels, Belgium nearly two hours of entertainment last Thursday, May 1. The show was recorded by some mysterious person, or persons, and that recording has found it's way to me and what can I do, but pass it on to all of you. The sound could be a lot better, so this is more than likely of real interest to hardcore Nick Cave fans alone.

Here's part one of the show, part two will be posted in another day or two.

PART 1
night of the lotus eaters
dig, lazarus, dig!
tupelo
today’s lesson
red right hand
midnight man
nobody’s baby now
deanna
lie down here (and be my girl)
hold on to yourself
the ship song

PART 2
we call upon the author
papa won’t leave you, Henry
more news from nowhere
the lyre of orpheus
get ready for love
stagger Lee
into my arms
hard on for love

Tom Waits Live: Akron Ohio 2006 MP3s

Got a request to re-post this great live recording of Tom Waits after the announcement of his upcoming summer tour dates.

These mp3 links are now dead.

Go here for some mp3s of Tom Waits July 5th 2008 show in Atlanta.

This is the best 'bootleg' I've ever heard of Tom Waits, but it isn't a true bootleg, the show was broadcast live on NPR and subsequently the sound is fantastic. Since I got my hands on this I've listened to Waits much more than I have in years. He and the band are in top form and the version here of "Tom Traubert's Blues" is fantastic. Not sure if it's the performance, or the nostalgia it stirs, probably a combination of the two, but a tear easily comes to the eye when I listen to this (if I let it). I should warn you that he tells a few stories and if you want to listen at work you might not want everyone in the office hearing some of the more objectionable words.

1 Make It Rain

2 Shore Leave

3 Falling Down

4 Tango Till They're Sore

5 Tom Traubert's Blues

6 Eyeball Kid

7 Murder in the Red Barn

8 Trampled Rose

9 Bottom of the World

10 Til the Money Runs Out

11 Get Behind De Mule

The Child Ballads: Cheekbone Hollows Pop. ½ Life

The Child Ballads
Cheekbone Hollows (POP. ½ Life)
Gypsy Eyes Records

There’s a loose, slack groove that slides like slippers on a hardwood floor as soon as this fine 6 track EP starts up. Opening with the title track “Cheekbone Hollows (POP. ½ Life)”, former Jonathan Fire*Eater front man Stewart Lupton comes on like the best possible amalgamation of Lou Reed and Mick Jagger – while your feet are dancing to the shuffling groove your head is singing with the lyrical verse. There’s a lot of great shuffling on the record… and loosely strummed acoustic guitar, Lupton hadn’t wasted his time since the implosion of JF*E, he went to university where he studied modern art history and poetry, he even learned to play acoustic guitar. This final point may explain the bare, chord based songs, songs that benefit greatly from Lupton’s vocal and lyrical flair. Lupton can sound like ‘Jagger as New Yorker’ (even if Lupton is from Washington DC) which is fitting as a number of songs exhibit the loose limbed junkie shuffle that Keith Richards nearly owns. Give “Laughter From The Rafters” a listen; it shines with electric lead from good friend Judah Bauer of the John Spencer Blues Explosion. And speaking of guest support, the EP balances the aforementioned ‘shine’ with the grainy shadows drawn across several songs by Betsy Wright’s viola.

Cheekbone Hollows (POP. ½ Life) is the encouraging first step by Lupton towards the greatness expected of him in the ‘90s with JF*E. Now I’ve got to get some slippers, a hardwood floor, and some room to dance.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: North American Tour!

I can finally let those of you out there, who actually visit Sixeyes, know that Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds are coming to North America this fall. This isn't 'news', but I held off until I had some tickets to see him and the band 'up close and personal' in my own dirty little hands (I cannot believe how easy it was to get these tickets, now Mr Tom Waits has got to get his wrinkled ass up here to Toronto for Christ sake. Jesus, come on, Tom). So, I've got five months to wait for this Toronto show and it should be worth every second if Cave and the band are as good as The Abattoir Blues Tour double DVD shows them to be.
