Jens Lekman, who releases his latest record, Night Falls Over Kortedala, tomorrow, spoke to Pitchfork about his tour, bringing samples to life on stage, flying planes, and playing badminton to Christina Aguilera remixes. Here's an excerpt:
So, can you fly a plane? How did that video come about?
Jens Lekman: I didn't know that I could fly a plane but apparently I could. I was over in Iceland for Iceland Airwaves, do you know that festival? It's in Reykjavik in October or November, and I was recording with Benni Hemm Hemm. All of the sudden there was this noise coming from outside the studio. We were out in the country somewhere. Benni got up and went out and started yelling at this guy, and I walked out and there was this red propeller plane making loops above the house. And apparently he was doing that all the time and [Benni] was sort of pissed of at it. But it was really beautiful, this sight of a red propeller plane flying across the Icelandic landscape, you know?
I was going to Iceland to play at another festival in August, and I told Marcus about the idea. Would that be even remotely possible? He said "Yeah, well, let me check with my friend." He had one friend in Iceland, and it turned out that her uncle owned two propeller planes, one which was exactly the same as the one I had seen. So it was really destined to happen. And they would do it for just the fuel, basically, and some sandwiches. So we were up there flying, and, yeah, I was flying a plane, it was very majestic.
