Shearwater began as an email collaboration between Okkervil River's Will Sheff and Jonathan Meiburg of Kingfisher. The result was 2001's The Dissolving Room.

Shearwater frontman, Meiburg, and Okkervil River frontman, Sheff, are ably supported by drummer and vibraphonist Thor Harris (who also plays with the Angels of Light and Devendra Banhart) and upright-bassist Kim Burke.
