The honeyed-warmth of Haligonian Jenn Grant's vocals will be enough to garner her fans wherever her music is played and she performs. A recent graduate of art school and sometime member of Halifax's contribution to the orchestral pop scene, The Heavy Blinkers, Grant will step into the limelight with her own music, her debut full-length, Orchestra For The Moon, in early 2007. Grant has two singles from the new album available to buy, "Britt n Kip" and "Dreamer".
"Britt 'n Kip" sounds like it's built out of an improvisation, because of the natural flow of images and rhythmic shifts. While this is interesting enough what makes Jenn Grant's songs truly stand out is her voice. It is simply stunning in it's effortlessness and one can only wonder at it's latent power if, and when, she cuts loose and really wails. In these two songs she trades in instrumental subtlety, colouring the tastful arrangements with her words that are twisted, stretched, and warmed by her singing abiliy. I think the only thing that will hold her back from reaching major stardom is how populist her songwriting becomes. But whether or not she appeals to the masses, she will be a star on some scale. She already appeals to musicians, which is evident by the roll call that assisted her in making her upcoming album, Orchestra For The Moon. Names such as Ron Sexsmith, Heavy Blinkers Jason MacIsaac and David Christensen, Jill Barber, and Tyler Messick. She is on the road this month with her band, The Night Painters, who are: Jason Burns - Drums and percussion, Sean MacGIllivray - Bass and backing vocals, Dave Christensen - Electric organ and Flute, Kris Pope - Slide and electric guitar, and Kinley Dowling - Violin.
