Danny Cohen invented punk rock.

At least that's what is claimed in the promotional kit for his latest release 'Dannyland' - Anti Records. Well, it says he invented it with his band Charleston Grotto, described as a proto-punk outfit (it would have to be, wouldn't it?) back in 1961.

True or not, Cohen has at least invented his own unique vision presented in his twisted tunes. A mixture of psych-folk and arch night club numbers (often simultaneously) is Danny Cohen music - and it has earned him some heavy hitter friends - Tom Waits and Ray Davies among them.

The song Motel Sex was originally titled Motel Six, but the hospitality chain of upstart Holiday Inns didn't appreciate being immortalized in the 'land of Danny'.
