Bloc Party Mash Ups

These are from Vice Records (i found them on their blog), a couple of mash ups done by ToTom featuring Bloc Party (whose latest album, A Weekend In The City, can be found here). You've got to hear the improvement to Coldplay when mashed with Bloc Party. The Gwen Stefani mash up doesn't ring any bells for me, I've never heard the Stefani song before... plus you've got to endure her overdone, overwrought, over sung vocals (thank you major labels for foisting this stuff upon us all). Go for the Coldplay mash and Kele's vocals first.

Montag 'Going Places'

Montag is a Montreal artist, Antoine Bédard, who, unlike other more well-known Montreal artists Arcade Fire and Wolf Parade, creates his music in the electronic field. But this isn't the harsh over done electronic beats of a band like Justice, Montag has a soft touch, and this softness is echoed in the choice of collaborators on his latest effort, Going Places. Working with Beach House's Victoria Legrand, Final Fantasy's Owen Pallett, Anthony Gonzales of M83, Amy Millan of Stars, Québécois hip-hop artist Ghislain Poirier, the band Au Revoir Simone, and Vancouver-based singers Ida Nilsen of Great Aunt Ida and Leah Abramson, Bédard has expanded on the sound he created with 2005's Alone, Not Alone. Recorded at Montag's home studio, Micro Ohne Studio 3, in Vancouver, Going Places will hit shelves on June 5th through Car Park.

The song "Best Boy Electric" sounds like an upbeat Stars, while his boy-on-boy duet with Final Fantasy's Pallett, "Softness, I Forgot Your Name", is short and sweet melancholy.

The Veils: 'Calliope' Video

Here's the latest video by The Veils, shot by the Brownlee brothers. This video is great, so much better than any featuring the band in the past. In fact, speaking of the 'past' and 'great', Finn Andrews with his wiry frame, fedora, and dark jacket, and the silent film flicker present throughout the video, brings to my mind a giant of film, Charlie Chaplin.

The band will be heading to North America for a tour beginning in June. Please do yourself a favour, grab some tickets and a good friend and go see the band. Here are the dates.

Wilco Pissed Off

It seems that the multi-entertainment magazine Entertainment Weekly in it's review of Wilco's latest album, Sky Blue Sky, made a reference comparing the Eagles and Wilco... they didn't like it. Read what band members said while talking to Spinner about the issue.

The National: Black Sessions MP3s

The National's latest effort, Boxer, another 'grower' by the way, which is how I tagged Alligator in my review back in 2005, is finally, officially, in stores... and all over the internet (a good chunk of the album has been posted on blogs in the past two days) if you go looking here. But here at Sixeyes we're going to give you the band live, or to put it another way... FANTASTIC. This is one amazing outfit to see perform in front of you, you owe it to yourself and future generations (ok, that's a little over the top) to see this band of musicians.

These are mp3s from two separate Black Sessions (which are live radio performances) that the band did in France over the past four years.
Links have passed on...RIP.

Worth A Listen: Basia Bulat

Basia Bulat is from London Ontario, a medium sized Canadian city not far from the small city I spent many years living in (too many). I have since escaped to what has recently been named the world's most intelligent community and sometimes I wonder if they know I'm here. But enough about my intelligence, or lack thereof, this is about Basia Bulat and why you should give her music a good listen. Today marks the European release of her debut full length album on Rough Trade Records, Oh My Darling. I've tagged her as a 'rising star' in the past and will stand by my prediction, or my fortunetelling. Basia's music is intimate and almost lush in production, the voice and instruments seeming to press up close against the speakers reaching out to you. Her debut is only available as an import, but that should change soon, for now here's some music to tide you over until you get your hands on the disc... and here's her myspace where you can listen to some more and check upcoming tour dates.

THE VEILS: "Not Yet" Solo Acoustic Video

Here's The Veils' Finn Andrews performing a solo set of the first track off the band's fantastic sophomore effort Nux Vomica and a heartfelt reading of Bruce Springsteen's "State Trooper" from Springsteen's landmark acoustic work Nebraska. The Springsteen song is one of the best he ever penned in my opinion and Andrews shows his talent with this performance, a talent that is amplified by his charisma and ability to get lost in the song and in turn pulling the listener in with him.

Worth A Listen: JIM BRYSON

I had never heard Canadian Jim Bryson's music before I came across a mention somewhere of his latest record, Where The Bungalows Roam (March 2007) on Kelp Records. Now first of all the record is good, but why I'm doing this post is because the guy is likely the most unsung singer who deserves to be praised by a chorus of music lovers across the internet. Well established as a star in his home city of Ottawa (Canada's Capitol), Bryson has attracted musicians who recognize his ability when they're putting a band together, namely fellow Canadian Kathleen Edwards and more significantly Giant Sand's Howe Gelb. The fact that Gelb plucked Bryson from the 'unsung barrel' will no doubt tell some of you of Bryson's latent talent. Gelb has for years used a keen ear to select the musicians he decides to play with, the most noteworthy being the fellas who left Giant Sand to form Calexico (a band that has earned a respectable reputation).

So, has that got you interested? Good. But it's describing Bryson's music that has made me put this post aside a number of times. It sounds so easy, well-worn and comfortable, like those old jeans you wish you still had. And it resists labeling, some have pinned words like folk and country to Bryson's music, but I think that's more of a feeling some songs inspire than the sound. On Where The Bungalows Roam he seems to have drawn everything inward, to keep the 'noise' in check, but that has only made the lyrics that much 'louder' and they are worth hearing for Bryson's pen is honest and humourous... his music hushed and homegrown (yeah, that's 4 H's but this is not the 4H Club, although some of the hats he wears could be).

After spending some time listening to the mp3 from WTBR and streaming the record through the link provided, give a listen to the song "Broken Fingers" from his 2003 release North Side Benches, it sounds to me like a long lost Jeff Tweedy gem. Enjoy Bryson, he's well worth a good listen.

"Either Way"
Maybe the sun will shine today
The clouds will blow away
Maybe I won’t feel so afraid
I will try to understand
Either way

Maybe you still love me
Maybe you don’t
Either you will or you won’t
Maybe you just need some time alone
I will try to understand
Everything has its plan
Either way
I’m gonna stay
Right for you

Maybe the sun will shine today
The clouds will roll away
Maybe I won’t be so afraid
I will understand everything has its plan
Either way

"You Are My Face"
I remember my mother’s
Sister’s husband’s brother
Working in the goldmine full-time
Filling in for sunshine
Filing into tight lines
Of ordinary beehives
The door screams I hate you
Hate you hanging around my blue jeans
Why is there no breeze
No currency of leaves
No current through the water wire
No feelings I can see
I trust no emotion
I believe in locomotion
But I've turned to rust as we've discussed
Though I must have let you down
too many times
In the dirt and the dust

I have no idea how this happens
All of my maps have been overthrown
Happenstance has changed my plans
So many times my heart has been outgrown
Now everybody’s feeling all alone
Can’t tell you who I am
When everybody’s feeling all alone
Can’t tell you who I am

I am looking forward
Toward the shadows tracing bones
Our faces stitched and sewing
Our houses hemmed into homes
Trying to be thankful
Our stories fit into phones
And our voices lift so easily
A gift given accidentally
When we’re not sure
We’re not alone

"Impossible Germany"
Impossible Germany
Unlikely Japan

Wherever you go
Wherever you land
I’ll say what this means to me
I’ll do what I can

Impossible Germany
Unlikely Japan

The fundamental problem
We all need to face
This is important
But I know you’re not listening
Oh I know you’re not listening

If this was still new to me
I wouldn’t understand

Impossible Germany
Unlikely Japan

But this is what love is for
To be out of place
Gorgeous and alone
Face to face

With no larger problems
That need to be erased
Nothing more important than to know
Someone’s listening
Now I know
You’ll be listening

"Sky Blue Sky"
Oh, the band marched on in formation
The brass was phasing tunes I couldn’t place
Windows open and raining in
Maroon, yellow, blue, gold and gray

The drunks were ricocheting
The old buildings downtown
Empty so long ago
Windows broken and dreaming
So happy to leave what was my home

With a sky blue sky
This rotten time
Wouldn’t seem so bad to me now
Oh, I didn’t die
I should be satisfied
I survived
That's good enough for now

With a sky blue sky
This rotten time
Wouldn’t seem so bad to me now
Oh, if I didn’t die
I should be satisfied
I survived
That's good enough for now

"Side With the Seeds"
Tires type black
Where the blacktop cracks
Weeds spark through
Dark green enough to be blue
When the mysteries we believe in
Aren’t dreamed enough to be true
Some side with the leaves
Some side with the seeds

The treetops nod
the rain applauds
The park grows dark
And the swings all slowly die
But you and I will be undefeated
by agreeing to disagree
No one wins but the thieves
so why side with anything

The streetlights glow
Comes and goes
When the sun comes back
As we all can plainly see
Embracing the situation
Is our only chance to be free
I’ll side with you
If you side with me

"Shake It Off"
Sunlight angles on
A wooden floor at dawn
A ceiling fan is on
Chopping up my dreams
What is left of them
I take to sleep again
Where I dare pretend
I’m more than I seem

Tears get triggered
Yours remind me
Of the ice melting in my glass
Finally full again
So
I listen for
Your lips to break apart
Into words

It definitely starts to spoil my heart
Somewhere there’s a war
Sometimes there is art

It definitely starts to spoil my heart
Somewhere there’s a war
Sometimes there is art

When I’m awake enough
I’m gonna shake it off

Shake it off

Hotels hold me
Thoughts horizon
So many hearts
Beating in one place
Like a giant
Beast with many souls
No
Just a body
Full of holes

When I’m awake enough
I’m gonna shake it off

When I’m awake enough
I’m gonna shake it off

Shake it off

"Please Be Patient With Me"
I should warn you
When I’m not well
I can’t tell
Oh, there’s nothing I can do
To make this easier for you

You’re gonna need to be patient with me

I’m this apple, this happening stone
When I’m alone
Oh, but my blessings get so blurred
At the sound of your words

I’m gonna need you to be patient with me

How can I warn you when my tongue turns to dust
Like we’ve discussed
It doesn’t mean that I don’t care
It means I’m partially there

You’re gonna need to be patient with me

"Hate It Here"
I try to stay busy
I do the dishes, I mow the lawn
I try to keep myself occupied
Even though I know you’re not coming home

I try to keep the house nice and neat
I make my bed I change the sheets
I even learned how to use the washing machine
But keeping things clean doesn’t change anything

What am I gonna do when I run out of shirts to fold?
What am I gonna do when I run out of lawn to mow?
What am I gonna do if you never come home?
Tell me, what am I gonna do?

I hate it
I hate it here
When you’re gone

I caught myself thinking
I caught myself thinking once again
Have to try to keep my mind out of this
Try not to pretend

I’ll check the phone
I’ll check the mail
I’ll check the phone again and I call your mom
She says you’re not there and I should take care

I hate it here
When you’re gone
I hate it
I hate it here
When you’re gone

I try to stay busy
I take out the trash, I sweep the floor
Try to keep myself occupied
Cause I know you don’t live here anymore

"Leave Me (Like You Found Me)"
That’s when I knew you
You might be lonely too
That’s what I wished for
Somebody just like you
To tell me what to do, honestly
And leave me like you found me

Can you believe it
I’m somebody just like you
Content with being blue, honestly
Leave me like you found me

I sit on the couch alone
Where you sit when I’m not home
And I feel so close to you

And down the city streets
People are climbing the trees
They’re finally up off their knees
Honestly
You leave me like you found me
Can you leave me like you found me

"Walken"
I’m walking
All by myself
I was talking to myself about you
What am I going to do

I was singing
This song about you
I was thinking about singing
This song for you

The more I think about it
The more I know it’s true
The more I think about it
The more I’m sure it’s you
Honey I think you’re just right
You’re just right

I was walking
Like I said by myself
I was talking
To myself about you
Like I always do

The more I think about it
The more I know it’s true
The more I think about it
The more I’m sure it’s you
Honey, I think you’re just right
You’re just right

"What Light"
If you feel like singing a song
And you want other people to sing along
Just sing what you feel
Don’t let anyone say it’s wrong

And if you’re trying to paint a picture
But you’re not sure which colors belong
Just paint what you see
Don’t let anyone say it’s wrong

And if you’re strung out like a kite
Or stung awake in the night
It’s alright to be frightened

When there’s a light (what light)
There’s a light (one light)
There’s a light (white light)
Inside of you

If you think you might need somebody
To pick you up when you drag
Don’t loose sight of yourself
Don’t let anyone change your bag

And if the whole world’s singing your songs
And all of your paintings have been hung
Just remember what was yours is everyone’s from now on

And that’s not wrong or right
But you can struggle with it all you like
You'll only get uptight

Because there’s a light (what light)
There’s a light (one light)
There’s a light (white light)
There’s a light (what light)
There’s a light (one light)
There’s a light (white light)
There’s a light (what light)
There’s a light (one light)
There’s a light (white light)
There’s a light (what light)
There’s a light (one light)
There’s a light (white light)
Inside of you

"On and On and On"
On and on and on we’ll stay together yeah
On and on and on we’ll be together yeah
You and I will try to stay together yeah
On and on and on we’ll be together yeah

Please don’t cry we’re designed to die
Don’t deny what’s inside
On and on and on we’ll stay together yeah
On and on and on
On and on and on

One day we’ll disappear together in a dream
However short or long our lives are going to be
I will live in you or you will live in me
Until we disappear together in a dream

Please don’t cry we’re designed to die
You can’t deny even the gentlest tide
On and on and on we’ll be together yeah
On and on and on
On and on and on
We’re going to try

Please don’t cry
This world of words and meanings makes you feel
outside
Something that you feel already
deep inside
You’ve denied
Go ahead and cry

On and on and on we’ll stay together yeah
On and on and on
On and on and on

You and I will stay together yeah
You and I will try to make it better yeah

Wilco: Sky Blue Sky MP3

Today is the release date for Wilco's latest, Sky Blue Sky. A record which sees the band getting comfortable, a likely sign that Jeff Tweedy is much more relaxed as opposed to when he was making Yankee Hotel and A Ghost Is Born. A good thing for Tweedy, just not as interesting a listen for music fans. But this record isn't bad, far from it, I love "Impossible Germany" and it's chiming guitars and mini-epic feel. "Hate It Here" matches the level of the previous song making this one worth owning just for those two alone, but that's just me, you'll likely have other favourites... more favourites.

Spoon 'Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga' MP3

Spoon’s sixth full-length studio album, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, will be released July 10 on Merge. It has already stirred up mucho interest in those who love solid pop music. And this first taste from Ga x 5, "The Ghost In You Lingers" will surely add to that interest, but it's kind of tricky. It bears the choppy keyboard rhythms that Britt Daniel surely must have imprinted on his DNA, but it doesn't bring in the drums and guitars. This will throw many ardent Spoon fans on first listen, although subsequent listens will lead many, if not all back to the altar of Spoon. This change is a good sign, for it shows that Britt and Jim Eno are doing a little experimenting with their proven formula and it's working as far as I can hear. What do you say?

Sam Prekop "Something" MP3

Right off this song puts you on edge, makes you a tad uncomfortable with it's off-the-beat percussion -- until Sam Prekop's mellifluous vocal softens the anxiety, like a drink may take the edge off a 'fear of flying' air traveler sitting out on the runway. And the voice is mellifluous, harmonious, make no mistake about it -- Prekop, a member of band The Sea and Cake, is almost a crooner, he makes it sound too easy. But continue listening and the contrast of the two, the percussion and voice, create a tension found in the most interesting of music -- although most often the tension is released and the listener is rewarded with the chorus. Not here... in Prekop's, "Something", we get a juggling act, even when Prekop steps back and a muted trumpet enters the ragged shimmer of this song, the juggling act continues until it just fades out... like dying sunlight on water.

I thank all the loyal Sixeyes readers in advance for this prestigious award (and of course my Mom and Dad and my Supreme Being of choice... and that Black Lab puppy we got when I was 12 or 13 and I slept in the basement with to stop her crying when we first got her. My brother Pete, seven years-old at the time, named her Blackie -- I miss you, Blackie).

Feist: The Reminder

Feist's latest work, The Reminder, is a vast improvement over her last disc, Let It Die. While Let It Die wasn't a bad record it lacked the aching emotion of her debut album, Monarch, but that may have been intentional in that she was trying to sing in a detached fashion. The Reminder seems to have struck a happy balance between those two records and will no doubt make an even bigger star out of this Canadian woman. Favourite tracks include "I Feel It All" (with it's bouncy melody and great sounding drum track), "The Park" (with an endearing demo-ish sound and chirping birds), "Past In Present" (a classic pop song), and "Limit To Your Love" (bearing a strong piano sound straight out of a Bill Withers song). A great record by an outstanding voice.

Shatner MP3s

It's been a while since I've seen Mr Shatner on a blog. Why I thought of him now? Not sure. My Dad went to McGill University in Montreal at the same time Shatner was there and I can remember thinking it was pretty cool that Captain Kirk's picture was in the yearbook my Dad has (even though it is now split in half). So, I guess that's reason enough to post the music of a fellow Montrealer and that there may be some of you out there who haven't heard that guy from Boston Legal singing with Henry Rollins. And I also found this great picture of The Shat with his toupee collection.
