Of Montreal and Shuggie

Does Of Montreal's Kevin Barnes (third from right) creep up on Beck Hansen and Prince on the band's upcoming new album, Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? Yes. Yes, he does. The song "Faberge Falls For Shuggie", sounds, not a little, as if Beck and Prince whipped up this number in a secret bunker somewhere. The track's opening synthed strings bring to mind old movies, for me, not one in particular, but it certainly stirs a nostalgic feel. The nostalgia continues with the corroded vibe of the keyboard chords and the reference, in the song's title, to west coast musician, Shuggie Otis, who recorded some very influential, but long unheard (until David Byrne's boutique label, Luaka Bop, repackaged some primo Shuggie), trippy funk music in the early 70's. This isn't the only funk on the new album, but I think it's the best. I rarely listen to music nostalgically, as in listening to old music to relive the past, but a great song like this one does get an added oomph when it can tap into the listener's memories. Don't worry if you don't qualify for this nostalgia, just listen, enjoy, and pass the word.

Here's a sample from the upcoming Of Montreal work, Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? [January 23rd, 2007 - Polyvinyl Records], and some Shuggie Otis, from the 2001 re-release on Luaka Bop, Inspiration Information.
