Devastations: TOUR DATES

devastationscolour

Things are looking rosy for Devastations, a band of long and lean Australians who have been calling Berlin, Germany, home for some time now. Their most recent release, Coal, is now out in UK/Europe on Beggars [Sept 26] and will see a well-deserved stateside unveiling on Brassland, October 24th. And it's fitting that they've chosen this city of long lost secrets, grimy old buildings, and smoky glass as their home away from home, as that description can also be applied to their music.

The band will soon set foot on North American soil for the first time and you can be there! Joining them on this inaugural trek will be fellow Aussies, The Drones. Interestingly, the Devs and Drones were both shortlisted for this year's Australian Music Prize which celebrates the "best album" of the year.

Princeton (the band)

Princeton is a California based trio of twin brothers Jesse and Matt Kivel along with Ben Usen. These fellas appear to be attempting to deliver the sombre beauty of Nick Drake, the peppy peppermint pop of the sixties, and the naiveity of those past times on their mini LP, A Case of the Emperor's Clothes. And with very little in the way of tools, as explained on their web site... "one microphone, one acoustic guitar, a cheap keyboard, six pairs of hands, three sets of vocal chords, and one small egg shaker"... they've achieved this perceived goal admirably. If you like shiny, sparkling harmonies glinting from the face of timeless melodies, you'd do well to focus your light upon this band. It'll be hard not to smile when they're smiling at you.

Don't worry your pretty little head, pretty little Nellie McKay [fan page] has a double album coming the end of this month, October 31st. Pretty Little Head will finally be issued on New York indie label, SpinART Records, after it had languished on the shelf since October 2005 when her previous label, Columbia, nixed her plans to release a full 23 song, 65 minute album by stating they wanted a cut down 16 song and 48 minute version.

Leeroy Stagger

Canada now has it's own Ryan Adams, his name is Leeroy Stagger. If Adams had kept toeing the line he drew with his acclaimed outfit, Whiskeytown, and swallowed enough hard times to grow a Steve Earle throat, well, hell, then Stagger would be American, but he's not... he's ours. But better yet, his latest and third full-length, Depression River, is everyone's.

Stagger delivers his songs in an incredibly familiar voice, ragged and warm it masks his youth (24) and yet it doesn't hide his sincerity. Although he does stir echoes of Earle, he recalls Wilco's Jeff Tweedy on the mid-tempo nugget, "Wish You Were The Trees". What stands out most of all is Stagger's ability to pen songs that seem like old friends. The album was released in Canada, October 3rd, but it won't be released stateside until February 2007. So, spread the word that rootsy alt-country has a new 'it' boy and you'll be able to say say you were a fan all along... when he's sitting up there with Letterman.

Woolly Leaves

Woolly Leaves is a side-project of Constantines keyboardist, Will Kidman. A quiet lo-fi bedroom recording done with skill and talent, and none of the trepidation you might expect from one who spends their time in a band led by a powerful writer and performer like Constantines singer, Bry Webb, and who often does his work in the shadows of the stage.

Kidman's voice carries a slight quaver similar to fellow Canadian, Neil Young. His voice and music are intimate and endearing, giving up touchstones such as double-tracked echoes of Elliott Smith to the rustic glow of Toronto's Hayden. Kidman's album, Quiet Waters [Outside Music], nearly whispers quiet tunes whose merits should be shouted.

A favourite song is "Soft Place to Call Home", a track that ends on a brief, yet lovely, coda wavering from the keys of an organ... a warmer, softer sound I couldn't imagine.
