Spoon: Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga MP3: "The Underdog"

Austin TX band, Spoon, are set to unveil their sixth full length on Merge Records this July 10th; and out of the ten tracks offered the best is "The Underdog", a song recorded in LA by the, nearing legendary status, Jon Brion. This track, like so many of Spoon's recent best, is once again driven by a chunky sounding acoustic rhythm guitar and the always welcome Spoon-ish hand claps. But what makes this one different is the punchy horn line that drives home the melody. Buried in the mix at song's opening, the brass then drops off completely to return beneath Britt Daniel as the chorus begins. But those horns stay in the background waiting their turn, waiting to punch their way to the foreground, where they serve to re-emphasize the hooky chorus line. Left hook, right hook, don't underestimate this 'underdog'. This song likely won't grab the listener as quickly as "You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb", but that track, "Cherrybomb", sounds like it's tailored for radio and will, like most everything on commercial radio, let you free of it's grasp suddenly, so you can discover the much better song, "Underdog". I know, I know, you're saying, "But Brion produced this song, not "Cherrybomb", doesn't that make "Underdog" the track tailored for radio?". And you're probably right, it's just that it sounds too damn good for what passes for radio. Ironically, "Underdog" ends with what sounds like a cherry bomb and I love that ending. I love how everything is building and rushing to that short, snappy explosion. Listen for that bang and then buy, well, PRE-ORDER (Pre-order through the link and also receive a FREE 7") Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga.

You'll thank yourself, if not me.

  1. Thanks for the taste! I can't wait for the full album. Nice blog. It seems like "Don't Make Me a Target" had been kicking around for a while because I've heard it live a few times. I had never heard "The Underdog" before. Spoon songs take root and grow on you extremely fast.
