Lionel Neykov

Lionel Neykov isn’t afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve. Even when that sleeve is brushing against the wood grain of his acoustic guitar and his voice is drawing outlines around that visible heart. And it’s that voice which will draw people to Neykov’s music, although I can't pinpoint just who he reminds me of, so I'll leave it at this: I was extremely impressed by that voice. And yeah, although indie is what I like and Neykov and his music has a major label feel (albeit an indie sound), I can’t ignore the pure talent that Neykov possesses vocally. I have never been contacted by an unsigned artist, whom, after listening for less than five minutes, I could predict would be picked up by a major label. The music is kind of like Ray Lamontagne’s rawness if leavened by the dry ache of two of Neykov's stated influences, Brits' David Gray and Damien Rice. For the most part it’s simply Neykov with his guitar and voice on his first effort, Songs of Want and Loss, which he has released himself via the internet.

Ruby Isle Cover Dan Bejar's Hello, Blue Roses
Got a quick note from Dan Geller of I am the World Trade Center and Kindercore Records. He just wanted to point out a cover he and Mark Mallman of Minneapolis Rock God did of the new song from the new musical endeavour (Hello Blue Roses) featuring Destroyer's Dan Bejar called "Shadow Falls". This is the note from Dan explaining how and why their band, Ruby Isle, covered the song:Last Friday, Ruby Isle was in the middle of recording our new record and were looking for some inspiration so we decided to take whatever track was number one on elbo.ws and cover it. It turned out it was a song by Hello, Blue Roses called Shadow Falls. Hello, Blue Roses has that guy Dan Bejar in it from Destroyer and The New Pornographers. This is conincdental because Ryan and I had a friend named Rob that had a label called Catsup Plate that put out a Destroyer record. Then our friend Phil Waldorf put out another Destroyer record on Misra. Then things got all out of control and they signed to Merge and became rock stars. On to the song… It was a pretty easy song to cover because it is very simple. Basically a chorus with some verselike parts that go in and out. Our take on it is VERY different, I hope we don’t offend HBR because we mean no harm. It was just supposed to be a fun send up of a current indie fave. Keep in mind we recorded and mixed it in about 5 hours. So here it is: Ruby Isle - Shadow Falls (Hello, Blue Roses), ENJOY!!!

ALBUM OF THE YEAR 2007: The National's 'Boxer'
I did a post telling the world what the best album of 2007 was in October and I guess it was a tad early, but it's now November and in just over two weeks it'll be December, so I'll tell you again... The best album of 2007 is The National's Boxer. Upon first listening to Boxer I wondered 'Where are the screamers that the band's previous album, Alligator, had?' You know, like "Mr November" and "Abel", the songs that Springsteen should play with them when he makes his surprise appearance with the band (I'm just wearing my fortune teller's turban here... or have I been out of the loop and this has already happened?). But shortly I forgot that the screaming was missing and began to absorb the subtlety of the new songs. The BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR (BOXER) shows the band at the peak of their powers: the vocals (Berninger sounds richer than ever), the music (the two brother pairings of Dessners and Devendorfs conjure more dynamics on this record than previously, plus the band as a whole displays a growing confidence by enlisting even more outside help than before with Doveman's Thomas Bartlett and Sufjan Stevens being two of the more notable contributors), the lyrics (from couplets that catch like burrs in your mind's sweater to lines that echo in the part of your brain reserved for crosswords and word games). All these add up to give the band's latest record my nod as Best Album of The Year. And (and this is a big AND) don't forget these guys churn out one of the most thrilling live shows in music (check dates here and here), I know, I've been thrilled much more so than anyone named 'Claire'.And now an honourable mention, a resounding runner-up shout out, goes to Iron & Wine for the fantastic The Shepherd's Dog, but Boxer wins this dogfight.
Go out and buy these two records if you haven't already, or if you have, go out and tell someone to buy these records.

Christine Fellows: 'Nevertheless'

If you've heard of Canadian Christine Fellows it may have been when The Mountain Goats voice and brain, John Darnielle, included her in a mix of songs on his own blog, Last Plane To Jakarta, a year ago. Here's what JD said about her song "Vertabrae":
This is the song of the year by a country mile, and also by a city mile, and by a nautical mile, too. Nobody else is writing at Christine’s level.
Maybe he should have included kilometres, as that's what we use up here in Canada (and most of the rest of the planet), but you get the idea... he thinks she's fantastic. Darnielle also brought Christine out on tour as his opening act which no doubt snared her a number of new fans, but what this post is about is that you can glom onto Fellows and her music. She deserves a bigger audience and has just released a brand new record called Nevertheless, on which she continues to display an editor's, or better, a poet's touch, when penning her tight concise lyrics, a skill developed over three previous solo efforts: 2 little birds (2000), The Last One Standing (2002), and Paper Anniversary (2005). But it isn't just the minimalism that appeals to me, it's her voice, as well. It's not showy, or affected, it simply rings and chimes from her throat with honesty, completely unfettered, a perfect vehicle to deliver her lyrics.
An interesting aside, Fellows is married to John Samson, the leader of Winnipeg band, The Weakerthans, you might want to check out them, too.

VIDEO: Bob Wiseman "Who Am I" (featuring Feist:)
CMJ Magazine's online version has got it right by bringing us the premiere of Bob Wiseman's latest self-directed video (watch it here), but they got a few other things wrong. Wiseman was not the singer of the band Blue Rodeo (although he was my favourite part of the band, he handled keyboards) or The Hidden Cameras. It's OK, or easy, to mess up who he played with, or whose record he played on, he's helped out a lot of artists such as Ron Sexsmith, Final Fantasy, and Royal City to mention just a few. Also, CMJ, when you use the term Canuck to refer to a Canadian, please don't spell it 'Cannuck'.
Check out Feist playing drums with Wiseman in this previous Sixeyes post.

Doveman: "The Sunken Queen" MP3
"The Sunken Queen" from Doveman's most recent record, With My Left Hand I Raise The Dead, sounds like some of the new stuff that came to us from The National, the beginning at least. And with Doveman's main man, 25 year-old Thomas Bartlett, playing on that record, a record that I have decided to name the best of 2007, it makes me wonder for a brief second, '... just coincidence?' Probably, but does it matter? No. Because as the song begins to unfold around the tight straining whisper of Bartlett, it's stately beauty lifts you up and away from the petty comparison game. It's a lovely song, my favourite from the record. Here's the song, but don't miss the video below.the sunken queen [mp3]

VIDEO: Feist on Saturday Night Live
Yes, Feist was on Saturday Night Live last night. It was good, but the most interesting thing was that a little known musician like Sebastian Kruger, who records as Inlets, was playing banjo for her in her opening number, "1 2 3 4". Check out his music here, you'll thank yourself, if not me.
UPDATE: Feist's SNL appearance will be rebroadcast on August 30th 2008. Several Feist mp3s were also reposted on that date here at Sixeyes (including those SNL songs).

INLETS 'Vestibule' EP
Inlets Sebastian Kruger helped out Leslie Feist as she made her Saturday Night Live debut last night. He was part of a trio of banjo players who added a much needed organic weight to the nearly weightless, but enjoyable fluff of Feist's "1 2 3 4".
=============================================
(this is a re-post from last December)

If you love the beautiful and sad, such as November rocks huddled like abandoned eggs on the beach, then the music of Inlets may satisfy your craving. Another in a growing line of talented bedroom auteurs, Inlets' Sebastian Krueger works the same organic farm as fellow midwesterner, Sufjan Stevens. And he also summons comparisions to another young precocious musician, Owen Pallett a.k.a. Final Fantasy. Only twenty-four years old, Brooklyn based Krueger earns some scratch playing with the band My Brighest Diamond (asthmatic kitty), but he obviously would like to carve out his own creative niche as a songwriter and performer, although he needs your help. You know, you're the ones with the ears and the craving for new music. So, here are some songs from Inlets latest EP, Vestibule, and a link to the free download of that EP at Luvsound, plus the credits for this latest effort. All you've got to do is spread the word about Inlets and their music.
