Harlem Shakes: Burning Birthdays EP: Review

harlemEP223Harlem Shakes
Burning Birthdays EP
[Independent - Feb. 6th]
*Sixeyes Score: 9.0 out of 10

The first time I heard the Harlem Shakes I was struck by how distinctive their sound was, and while Lexy Benaim's voice is the main focal point, the band churn up a great weave of a backdrop for that voice. In the past they've generated an excited burbling in some corners of the internet, but they should set things a-buzzing with the self-release of their first EP, Burning Birthdays on February 6th.

The new EP delivers five tracks, four new and the fifth a re-recorded version of "Sickos". That redone song is reason enough to buy the EP, a fantastic piece of pop music, "Sickos" used to stand head and shoulders above the rest of the band's output, but now it has a few friends to keep it company. Namely "Carpetbaggers" and "Old Flames". Also, track number 2 bears mentioning as well, "Red Right Hands" with it's sweet hook and whirling organ. This band can shiver and shake like The Walkmen, but without the near overpowering intensity of Walkmen vocalist Hamilton Leithauser; Benaim is softly seductive with a sugary upper register that often feels fragile. The sound is hard to pin down with regards to references, but then this is an indication to how original they sound on record. The music pours out of the speakers, Benaim's unique vocals wonderfully matched with Todd Goldstein's inventive guitar work, while both are bolstered by a tight rhythm section. These are five strong tracks, but the record closes with a taste of things to come, perhaps. That final track, "Old Flames", is trademark Harlem Shakes, the band harmonizing while Benaim and Goldstein put their stamp on the song, but this one stretches out over the final minute into a mini-epic with the harmonies riding a galloping guitar into a bright promising future for the Harlem Shakes.

SXSW: 2007 Comin' but 2006 Still Kickin'

Six, or seven, weeks to go until the music starts at SXSW (March 14th), I won't be there, but I guarantee you that the buzz that'll build in the indie music community will be like a pot of strong coffee to me. Last year SXSW had a massive amount of music and the same will be true this year. You may already know that the festival for the past couple of years has hosted hundreds and hundreds of mp3s of bands that were showcaseds at Austin, although this year's showcase mp3s aren't online yet, last years are still downloadable and here are about 50 free and legal mp3s.

You'll find more mp3s of any of these artists by searching the hype machine. Just punch in the artist's name in that great big search box in the upper right corner.

M. Craft (the M stands for Martin)

Without any doubt the singer/songwriter to watch this coming year is 30 year-old M. Craft.

That's what I predicted when I first posted on this singer and I still feel the same. It's simply stunning that he hasn't received more attention via the music blogging community. The Australian-born and London-based musician traffics in music that stirs comparison to Nick Drake, Simon and Garfunkel, Josh Rouse, and he even mixes some bossa nova shuffle into the pot. Craft began his musical career when he co-founded the famed Aussie band, Sidewinder, in 1991 at age 15. After the band dissolved in 2000, Craft wandered about, eventually settling in London where he released his solo debut I Can See It All Tonight in 2004. It drew some heady praise from the UK press and Craft was eager to get the next record done, but was beset by a number of disasters. The most serious being an electrocution suffered from a guitar amp, one that left him immobile for a couple of days. With all that and the release of a hard won record behind him, things should be looking up for the singer with the release of Silver and Fire last March 20th. Craft isn't operating in the same space as most in the indie field, he sounds to me like a curious mixture of Hayden and Josh Rouse.... at 3 am.

you are the music [mp3]

In this song, "Demons", (which isn't on the album) when he sings the line "... and I tried so hard..." and the chord shifts on the word hard, and his voice drops to match, that's the hook... the tiny, shiny, blue hook that will pull you into this song and tell you to seek out Silver and Fire, Craft's debut on British label, 679 Recordings.

Listen to the sweet and achy jangle of "Little Finland" and then get excited when I tell you that the tiny 3 song EP which contains this song is just one of many free downloads written and recorded by Louis over the past ten years.

Jack Adaptor

This duo, with the name that sounds like a Spoon song, has the knack of melding catchy with funny. Just give "Albino Alligator" a listen, with the singer continually pushing the line "... skin tight...", over and over and then, just once, drops in a quick "... well hung...". The song that really got me listening was this one, "Piano Hands". A sweet and simple melody upon a synthed string section is what will make this one stick. You may not notice that it has done that, stick I mean, but the sticky piece of ribbon which is this song, will get to flapping now and again asking to be played once more.

Together since 2002, Jack Adaptor has found itself compared to the humorously idiosyncratic outfit, Ween, but the only connection I see, or hear, is one of humour. From what I can glean from their website, they've released three albums with the most recent being Road Rail River in the spring of 2006 (earlier efforts being Jack Adaptor in 2001 and Right Royal in January of 2006). Jack Adaptor doesn't fit into any pigeonhole, or ape any sacred cows, this duo of Christopher Cordoba and Paul Frederick, have their own special cage at the indie zoo and this is where they can dig, in peace, their own 'jackadaptorhole'.

Bright Eyes: 'Four Winds' MP3s

Here's a little something from Bright Eyes upcoming EP, Four Winds, March 6th, which will be followed by the full length, Cassadaga, on April 10th. The track "Smoke Without Fire" shows us Conor Oberst without any vocal affectation, sounding warm and hollow not unlike Bob Dylan on Nashville Skyline, after he quit smoking. M Ward joins in on the song, lending his slow smoky rasp to this quiet lovely track. Ward isn't the only talent making a contribution to the album, also lending helping hands and throats are Gillian Welch and Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney, Quasi).

Ted Leo: "The Sons Of Cain": First Live Performance

The first legal mp3 available from Ted Leo's upcoming record is "The Sons Of Cain". And it is a great song, one of those that sound like it was written during band rehearsal, you know one of those songs that just jumps out at you right off the bat, or the downbeat. And it was, written that is, one August morning as the band toured the last album, Shake The Sheets. August 26th, 2006 was the day, according to this source, and he's the one to thank for the mp3 of Ted saying "We literally wrote this this morning" before slashing away at that already familiar and welcome riff that carries throughout the song. It's amazing how the song came into being that day and still hasn't changed much over the course of a year and a half. It even had the screams of Ted rage that are on the album version. Hell, it's even the same length, at close to four minutes.

This was recorded on a digital phone (i have been corrected by the horse's mouth, so to speak, it was a digital camera, not a phone), so don't expect much, but it is the 'live' birth of a great song, and how often do you get to hear that.

Sam Skarstad

SAM SKARSTADSam Skarstad makes fascinating music. Although he's just twenty years old (and his first release came when he was seventeen and still in high school, in fact Skarstad is now a student at Skidmore College in New York state), it's a shame that he has hidden the talent displayed here beneath the synthetic pop of NY band, Snakes Say Hisss. Skarstad's songs offer up sounds you've heard before, but the sounds you hear change as you listen. The guitar strings becoming pebbles striking water, or the synth-string section could be voices coming through walls, or birds screeching, or whatever your mood dictates.

Familiar music, or familiar patterns in music can be comforting even when they are stale; although all those familiar songs are playing, in your mind, the same video over and over and over. Listen to Skarstad and the curtain lifts on a new picture. You may see pictures you don't want to see, but those that do appeal soften them. This is music you have to grow accustomed to, like a new pair of shoes before you've broken them in. He plays all the instruments on the recording and those instruments were an interesting mix of guitar, violin, piano, low irish flute, bul-bul (pakistani banjo), accordian, and melodica.

Young artists are frequently tagged with the word 'promising', and those so tagged have made a promise with their talent. Sam Skarstad has made a promise with his new album Serkus and now you can expect to see his name in places with much more pull, savvy and prestige than this music blog.

DISCOVER: 'Patrick Watson' and 'Peter Adams'

Patrick Watson: upper left by Brigette HenryI can't imagine what it would be like to be the son of a legend, a musical great. To be following in your father's or mother's footsteps into the media limelight. Sean Lennon instantly comes to mind as a prime example of my failure to comprehend what it would be like. But I imagine that it's similar if you are a musician who just sounds uncannily like a singer whose voice is, or was, so spectacular and unique that it is, or was, a major part of their fame and allure as a musician. I slipped the past tense into that previous sentence because the singer I am thinking of here, and whose musical persona is resurrected by those who listen to the two living musicians in this post, is no longer with us, that being Jeff Buckley. Those who write about music always search for a starting point to help describe the music in question, and when that starting point is as iconic as Jeff Buckley, I imagine it could be as helpful, or harmful, as being the progeny of a musical legend.

Montreal's Patrick Watson and Cincinnati's Peter Adams are both relatively unknown singers who have garnered vocal comparisons to Jeff Buckley. Adams was recently written up in Magnet magazine (a favourite of mine) in their 'Top Ten Artists To Watch For In 2007' piece. That article does include references to Adams vocal similarity to Buckley, or as Cory duBrowa wrote about Adams on his 2004 album The Spiral Eyes, "…Adams' voice is a dead Peter Adamsringer for Buckley's Grace era work…". I'll have to take exception to that description, there's a similarity, but Montreal's Patrick Watson gives me shivers when I listen to some of his work, for his vocals are much closer to the dramatic flair and verve of Buckley's voice. I want to say Watson is the 'true' dead ringer here, but again duBrowa's choice of words is unfortunate, so I will say Watson's throat is more gifted and the influence that Buckley has on his music much more pronounced. The music of these two also differs in that Watson's is much looser and open to improvisation, it sweeps and soars with the whims of his voice, where Adams follows a much tighter structure, finding it's drama more often in the instruments played than in Adams vocals. If you're more inclined towards the experimental then Watson is whom you should lay your money on, if not, then Adams is your man. Both are talented songwriters and without question you should investigate the music of each to satisfy your curiosity.

Peter Adams will release a new album later this year, as an email informed me recently, and I quote (cut and paste)...
"Peter and his band the Nocturnal Collective are currently working on the anticipated follow-up to The Spiral Eyes, due for release mid 2007. Writing and recording is currently underway in Cincinnati and Nashville with acclaimed engineer/producer Chris Grainger (Wilco, Viva Voce)."

The Arcade Fire: "Ocean Of Noise" MP3

Here is a limited time offer. This is track six from Arcade Fire's upcoming release, Neon Bible. This one kind of reminds me of early Springsteen from The River era... if the song "Point Blank" had been on the earlier album Born To Run. So, I guess it reminds me of early Springsteen, plain and simple.

Okay, maybe i'm not being clear enough, I mean that it sounds like The River's "Point Blank", if that song had been found on the earlier released album, Born To Run. If "Point Blank" had the 'wall-of-sound' which Born To Run is renowned for (thanks, onya).

Tobias Fröberg, Thank You

PHOTO of Tobias Froberg by KnotanI love this song. I f**king love it. It stirs feelings of longing and loving and warm hands and how one person can be alone, but two can be a tiny universe of secrets. It sure doesn't hurt that it bears a rhythm that gets you swaying back and forth, and a melody that makes you think you can sing (or me, at least). Tobias Fröberg, thank you for this song, it does what music has done for me since I was a child, it makes everything better.

I have posted on Swede Tobias Fröberg in the past, that post is right here. And now, so you can get closer to this song, here are the lyrics to "Grace"... along with an mp3 from his debut album, he has another record called Somewhere In The City [2006], you can buy both here.

i could kiss her in the dark,
we could kiss where all the freaks are

i don't think i'm gonna die,
i just want her to remember,
that i don't want to lie,
keep her and love her

she doesn't want to save the world,
she just wants to be remembered,
she's sometimes more than i have heard,
and she's nothing like november

and when we are alone,
and she washes away her makeup,
and she tells me that she loves me so,
i hope i'll never be alone

i don't think i'm gonna die,
i just want her to remember,
that i don't want to lie,
keep her and love her

i don't think i'm gonna die,
i just want her to remember,
that i don't want to lie,
keep her and love her

Uncut Magazine's 'The Best Of 2002' CD: Part 2

Here are the mp3s as promised last week, if you checked out part 1, you can just skip down to the songs... hope you find something you like.

I've been a fan of magazines since I was around ten or eleven years old. And most of my magazine money over the many years has gone towards music mags, my first subscription to a music magazine being Rolling Stone. But this was back when RS still had some bite, I think it was around 1974 when it began showing up in the mailbox. Now the last magazine to make a serious impression on me and my wallet has been British mag, Uncut. After finding it in the late nineties, I purchased around thirty straight issues, using the always good-to-great compilation CDs with each issue to make some interesting mixtapes. Yesterday I was looking through my dusty collection of Uncut discs and decided to post a few of them in their entirety. First up on the first day of 2007 is Uncut's 'Best Of 2002', a CD boasting 18 tracks from various artists such as Ryan Adams, The Streets, Tom Waits, Wilco, Warren Zevon, and Jeff Buckley. Today's post will offer the second half of the CD while the links for the first half have now been deleted.

Plush

There's this guy, see, his name is Liam Hayes and he lives in Chicago (i think). He creates music and records it and sometimes performs it.... wait... he records and re-records it, etcetera... etc. He puts out records once in a long while, his best effort to date, Fed, is only available on some Japanese label and was released almost exactly four years ago, December 23, 2002. Vocally, Hayes drifts in and out of Bowie territory, but never stays for long, he even draws brief comparisons to Bryan Ferry. Musically he drapes strings, horns, and baubles over the songs and he often warms things up with some welcome soul. This song, "Greyhound Bus Station" was an instant favourite, but then again, Hayes is the type of writer and artist whose work grows on you over time... so I get the feeling that my faves of this artist will shift over time.

Arcade Fire: New MP3 "Black Mirror" + 'Neon Bible' Tracklist

Merge Records franchise outfit, the Arcade Fire, will unleash a flurry of hype when their second full length Neon Bible hits the stores on March 6th in North America and March 5th in Europe. That album's first single will be "Black Mirror", a fitting choice as it bears the ornate framing of the best songs on the debut album, Funeral.

Rumbling with kettle drums and rising and falling with choral vocals, a hammered piano, and strings, this song will not disappoint those looking for more of what Funeral delivered at it's most accessible moments.

Here's a taste of the new record, the aforementioned first single from Neon Bible... and below is the tracklist for the Montreal band's latest.

Aaron Schroeder

I did a post on Aaron Schroeder's music a while ago here and have just recently been listening to some demos for his work-in-progress album, Black & Gold. One of those demos, "Between Drags" is very, very good, a song which at it's heart is apparently one of those damn burrs that get caught in your socks right up against those tender ankles. You'd most likely bend over and tear at those damn burrs, but not this time, after several repeat listens you'll discover that burr to actually be a seed... a seed which has begun to sprout. Any song that can remind me of a burr (which was the inspiration for the invention of velcro, by the way), or can slip under your locked door and take up residence so insidiously and yet begin with the epithet, "Fuck it...", has something going for it. Namely, sharply observed lyrics, a lovely understated lead vocal, and so-catchy-that-they're-damn-near-viral la de da de da's. Download, listen and make a note to seek out this young man's music. This guy will only get better.

Band To Watch: TRAVELS

TravelsAnar Badalov and Mona Elliot met while touring Europe together in their respective bands, Metal Hearts and Victory at Sea. Metal Hearts is a young band who released an album on Suicide Squeeze Records called Socialize in 2006, garnering the Baltimore band a couple of handfuls of postive reviews from across the US for standout tracks like "Socialize" and "Foothills". The fairer half of Travels, Mona Elliott, has been paying dues in the Boston band Victory At Sea since 1996, earning a reputation for fashioning music that creates it's own very distinctive mood. These two musicians, Badolov and Elliott, bring singular talents to a table already bearing food, like knives and forks they appear to belong together and yet serve to accomplish their own peculiar tasks. What I'm trying to say is this is good, good enough to hook your ear, and good enough to put down roots in both those ears. The songs have a prickly feel, as do the lyrics, although both are muted by the ear pleasing vocals of Mona and Anar, their voices sounding very nice against each other.

Here's one of the songs the duo have finished...

Visit their myspace for a couple more songs.

Here's where I've asked Anar a few questions to get a better understanding of the band:

When were the songs written? During the European tour, or were they all conceived since the two of you moved in together?
Anar: Most of the songs we're working on were written immediately after we got back to the US and moved in together. There's been a sudden burst of inspiration.

Are you two playing all the instruments?
Anar: Yes we are. As of now we're keeping the recordings kind of bare-bones, with just guitars/vocals/and programmed drums.

And is this a home-recording?
Anar
: Yep, it's a home recording. We decided to keep it as intimate as possible and do it from our living room by ourselves. It's quicker, cheaper, and more pleasant sounding to both of us.

Is there any label interest at this point?
Anar: We literally got back from Europe, SORT of tied up loose ends, kind of left everything and started this project. I'm already contacting a particular label I'm interested in, but we haven't really had the time to focus on that as much as the music itself.

Finally, are the songs on your myspace demos, or are they what you plan on releasing? I mean, I think they sound great... but I often prefer the barebones arrangements of demos.
Anar: These songs aren't gonna be demos. We're gonna keep recording from home, finish this record alone, and then probably get the songs mastered. We also prefer the barebones arrangements.
