Of Montreal and Shuggie

Does Of Montreal's Kevin Barnes (third from right) creep up on Beck Hansen and Prince on the band's upcoming new album, Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? Yes. Yes, he does. The song "Faberge Falls For Shuggie", sounds, not a little, as if Beck and Prince whipped up this number in a secret bunker somewhere. The track's opening synthed strings bring to mind old movies, for me, not one in particular, but it certainly stirs a nostalgic feel. The nostalgia continues with the corroded vibe of the keyboard chords and the reference, in the song's title, to west coast musician, Shuggie Otis, who recorded some very influential, but long unheard (until David Byrne's boutique label, Luaka Bop, repackaged some primo Shuggie), trippy funk music in the early 70's. This isn't the only funk on the new album, but I think it's the best. I rarely listen to music nostalgically, as in listening to old music to relive the past, but a great song like this one does get an added oomph when it can tap into the listener's memories. Don't worry if you don't qualify for this nostalgia, just listen, enjoy, and pass the word.

Here's a sample from the upcoming Of Montreal work, Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? [January 23rd, 2007 - Polyvinyl Records], and some Shuggie Otis, from the 2001 re-release on Luaka Bop, Inspiration Information.

THE SHINS: NEW MP3

It's been a while since my last post, been falling apart physically lately. At twenty that barely slows you down, but at my age it throws you down and kicks you in the teeth and in the gut. I'm a little better, for now, so here's some music. This is the b-side to The Shins single for "Phantom Limb" off the anticipated album, Wincing the Night Away.

Franklin Delano

FRANKLIN DELANO: All My Sense Are Senseless TodayI've always been attracted to contrast in music, from different guitar figures to the blending and unblending of two voices that shouldn't sound good together, but they do. This is what you get with 'Question' - from the guitar weave to the sweet and sour vocals of Paola Iocca and Marcella Riccardi.

It comes at you in waves... waves of guitar patterns - arpeggios, harmonics - electric, acoustic - only to be broken by the line, ' It's not a question...', right up against your ear - like Clint Eastwood in a spaghetti western, all breathy, like he's oddlly out of breath from climbing off his horse.

Some think of Italy when they hear the term 'spaghetti western', but they were most often made in Spain. Although Italy is where the band Franklin Delano is from - made up of Iocca and Riccardi, plus Vittoria Burattini and Stefano Pilia. A band self-described as the 'dark side of post-folk'... a christening which baptises them in the same moody Americana waters as The National and Okkervil River.

Lily Frost

Lily Frost's voice is beautiful. I haven't been as taken with a woman's voice since I happened upon Leslie Feist on some long forgotten record label site about five years ago. It's clear, smooth, well shaped, and that's just her voice! And yes, she's also Canadian, as is Feist, and there's even a connection with Feist, as Frost's husband, Jose Contreras, once pulled Feist into his own band, Toronto's By Divine Right. But it's Lily we're talking about here and she's just released a gem of a record called, Cine-Magique. And as I stated at the beginning, it's the voice which is the star here. It's a voice which cannot be buttonholed, shoehorned, or labelled... Frost effortlessly seguing between the coquette and the innocent without either vanishing completely. Her very recent release (September 19th in Canada), Cine-Magique, does not make any obvious attempt to nail the 'hip' sound favoured by today's indie kids. This is simply a talented woman (with a lovely voice) playing music she loves, not what's in vogue.

Now, the songs I love on this record are "Enchantment", "Secrets", "You've Shaken Every Part Of Me" and, surprisingly to me, "So In Love". The final song, in that short list, is a classic written by Cole Porter for the 1948 Broadway musical, Kiss Me Kate. It's a song which has attracted the attention of dozens of talented singers, but Frost does an admirable job in the many limbed shadow this song carries. And when you hear "The Priscillas's Song" you'll realize that Frost is the epitome of the '60s pop star. It's a Phil Spectorish 'sha-la-la' number which shines via Frost's clear commanding voice that swims just above the little girl from which it bloomed.

You've got to give this woman a listen and then spread the word because Frost is a surprising and special talent, and she warrants more attention.

Cine-Magique, her fourth solo record, is available on Aporia Records.

Stafrænn Hákon: MP3s

SHAKON1Stafrænn Hákon is a one man band, (Stafrænn Hákon translates as Digital Hakon, his real name being Olafur Josephsson), that harvests it's songs from a basement in Iceland. With over 5 recordings to date, you have much to discover from this artist. The sound is guitar focused, supported by drum loops and submerged keyboards. Imagine Iron & Wine raised in a vast open landscape of volcano and midnight sun, worshipping electronica as much as folk. While this is mostly instrumental music, with the odd soft-spoken bit woven into the framework of song, the upcoming album, Gummi, will be the first to bear vocals. Fellow Icelandic musician Blindfold contributes his voice and musical ability to Gummi... which, in my opinion has stengthened Stafrænn Hákon's music immensely. The very atmospheric music he has created all along has now taken on a warmer, more intimate tone, with the addition of a singing voice. The new recording will be released on Resonant Records (UK) and Nature Records (Japan) sometime this winter. These fellow Icelandic musicians and good friends, have worked together in the past... here's an example from Blindfold's self-titled album from 2005 on Resonant Records:

The Shins: "Australia" MP3: KEXP Session + Sunny Day Sets Fire

James Mercer's voice is the most melodic siren I've yet heard. It's so distinctive, and it's that distinctiveness paired with the doubleshot of bittersweet lyrics and sharp cornered melodies that make the Shins one-of-a-kind in the 'break the mould and throw it away' world of indie rock. This mp3, of a song from the band's upcoming release, Wincing The Night Away, is a very faithful live rendition of the album track. The album is great, if you love indie pop at it's best (and who doesn't?) put this one on your 'to buy' list.

Also worth a listen or two, is the band Sunny Day Sets Fire. Based in London, UK, the four members mix a little whimsy("Brainless"), sharp hooks ("Wilderness") and a solid beat (everything I've heard so far), to easily be labelled your new fave band.

Aaron Schroeder: Interview

Musician Aaron Schroeder is a lover of words and music. It's evident by listening to what he has crafted for his self-released debut album, Southern Heart in Western Skin. It's also obvious through the answers he gave in this interview he allowed me to conduct. Per usual, I lobbed some wishy-washy questions and hoped for some interesting responses... I got 'em, people. So, listen to the music, read his answers, then put his name down on some important looking paper (with an asterisk, star, or some such thing beside it), and stuff that scap of parchment in your wallet, or handbag. You'll gonna need it to prove to the skeptics that you knew of this talent all along.

====================

*SIXEYES INTERVIEW with AARON SCHROEDER

*Sixeyes: How difficult is it putting out a CD on your own without a label? Is this your first experience at promoting your own album?

Aaron Schroeder: When I put out Southern Heart In Western Skin there were simply no options for a label; so I simply put it out myself. Although I basically spent my savings account to get the disc made, a lot of other efforts went into it: a great friend of mine did the art, another great couple of friends produced it, a few more great people played on it. All I had to do was write the music, sit around and direct people, and then spend money to press it. I suppose that putting a record out on a label is pretty much the same way, minus the last step. Ultimately, it's really not too hard to release anything on your own, so long as you don't mind waiting for other people to work on it; I didn't have enough money to pay everyone for their time, so as hard as I worked on it there was no way I could have met any sort of deadline. As long as you're cool and flexible and are willing to bum some smokes to your lap steel player, it's fun as shit.

*SE: Well, that doesn't sound too hard, I guess it helps to have good friends. How about the recording of the record? Was it done in bits and pieces over time, or in one shot? Where did you record?

Aaron: This record was done all across the country. I recorded a couple songs here at home in Washington, I did a few in Boston and a couple others in Los Angeles. I never intended to release anything, so it wasn't ever like 'Hey dude, we need to finish the bass on track 5 of the record.' I just recorded with whoever was around in our spare time. It's interesting to see different people's ideas about production and how they shaped my songs. It was kind of like a hiphop album in that way, only no one working on it had any gold. In any event, the second record (which will be out in a few months) was all recorded with the same people, the same producer. If 'Southern Heart' is my hiphop record this is my rock'n'roll album.

*SE: What about influences? You have a decidedly traditional sound and yet you namecheck artists from several genres on your myspace, i.e. Kurtis Blow, Billy Bragg, John Darnielle, Otis Redding, Destroyer... quite a divergent group, but you fail to mention any country artists. So, I want to know which country musician has had the most influence on you and this record?

Aaron: Hank Williams - both musically and otherwise. I've read a few books about his life, I've seen that old cheesy movie and I love his approach to song writing. There are simply too many current artists who focus too much attention on interseting changes and complicated melodies; Hank seemed to keep everything as simple, direct, clean as possible. I've heard stories of him writing multiple songs in the backseat while someone from his band drove them to a gig. How many artists do you think can do that successfully anymore? Other than Hank, I also love The Delmore Brothers, Patti Page, George Jones, Neko Case (especially Furnace Room Lullaby), Paul Robeson, Johnny Cash.

*SE: From some research I have done on your background, I learned that you enjoy reading a great deal. What do you feel is the type of sway your personal reading has over your lyrics?

Aaron: Although I have certainly swiped a line or two from some obscure book, I think the books I've read really have a much less direct influence. The syntax I use in many of my songs wouldn't be as developed were it not for the influence of poetry - the same can be said for some of the stories I use in my songs. I generally learn what NOT to do in songwriting from authors. Working in a bookstore, I flip through a lot of terrible "popular" or "hip" authors and that really helps me guide my songs away from places where I might sound ridiculous. Any amount of exposure to other people's art has really helped to whittle away what I'm attempting to do with my music. Plus reading gave me something to do in high school.

*SE: Are there any songs you've written that came out of a mood which a book you were reading inspired in you? I'm talking musical mood here, not lyrical.

Aaron: This answer may be a bit more direct than what you're asking, but there is a song on the record called "Devil's Lake" which was inspired by a book called Rumspringa by Tom Shachtman. The book is very new actually and it goes into a period of time in every Amish teenager's life when they are allowed to sort go crazy - fuck themselves up, so to speak. The idea is that after they do this, they will return to the Church and be Amish adults. Another song I'll use is "Dead Rabbits" which has somewhat of a universal concept, but my version is based roughly on Murakami's "South Of The Border West Of The Sun." Both focus on accepting the fact that the person you love may not love you back.

*SE: From speaking of novels and reading, I wonder if you've ever entertained the notion of writing over music?

Aaron: Once when I was 15 I wrote this novel that amounted to about a 150 page journal with a few prominent characters other than myself. When I was a little boy a friend of mine drown in a swimming pool and I created a character based on how I think he might act. Needless to say, nothing ever came of that; it is really much better that it remain an embarrassing footnote rather than something actually floating around in the hands of the public. Lately, other than the songs I've been writing a lot of poetry, thanks mainly in part to my recent discovery of Stephen Dunn and John Ashbury's all-too-inspiring poetry. Occasionally I'll pop out a short story, but even that suprises me when I do.

*SE: How do you, or did you, get word out regarding your album (Southern Heart in Western Skin)? I know you've contacted music blogs, but have you tried any other avenues?

Aaron: I've got the album on iTunes, CdBaby, Amazon. I tried to take myself out of the thing and figure how I would, as a fan of some other artist, like to find music. Someone's also posted a torrent of the disc, so kids who are hip to that sort of thing can download the thing for free. It's really just been a lot of work and being practical and reasonable about what I want from my music.

*SE: Finally, what's coming up for you? More recording? Playing shows? Where do you play, for that matter? And when can we expect the 'rock 'n roll' record?

Aaron: I am constantly recording music, be it demos or something more concrete. The next record is going to be called "Black & Gold" and I think it should be out early 2007. It's made up of some nice and cathy rock songs, the kind where you want to roll down your window and laugh at the all the idiotic shit around you as you drive past. I suppose it's somewhat victorious in that aspect. It's been influenced heavily by traditional rock (Dylan, Beatles, Stones era-'Exile On Main Street'), but there's all kind of intersting sonic shit on there too so all the headphone kids won't get bored. If someone reading this wants to support my home, girlfriend and my black dog while I'm on tour, please don't hesitate to reach me at:

Death Cab For Cutie's Chris Walla

Chris Walla has made a name for himself as a producer, as well as guitarist, for 'indie to major label' band, Death Cab For Cutie. Since around 1998, Walla has also been involved in a solo project he calls Martin Youth Auxiliary. But in the past seven years only one recording has been released, 1999's self-titled cassette on Elsinor Records. On his website is word that he will finally release, through Barsuk, a new solo work in March 2007.

Walla has a number of mp3s offered on his website. From covers, to experiments, to demos, they do give you a good idea of his sound... a sound I would describe as having the astringency of Pavement's Stephen Malkmus and the melodicism of John Vanderslice. Walla is a talented and tasteful musician worth your attention.

Music You Should Hear: Woolly Leaves

Woolly Leaves is a side-project of Constantines keyboardist, Will Kidman. A quiet lo-fi bedroom recording done with skill and talent, and none of the trepidation you might expect from one who spends their time in a band led by a powerful writer and performer like Constantines singer, Bry Webb, and who often does his work in the shadows of the stage.

Kidman's voice carries a slight quaver similar to fellow Canadian, Neil Young. His voice and music are intimate and endearing, giving up touchstones such as double-tracked echoes of Elliott Smith, to the rustic glow of Toronto's Hayden. Kidman's album, Quiet Waters [Outside Music], nearly whispers quiet tunes whose merits should be shouted (I am shouting!! Can you hear me?!!).

A favourite song is "Soft Place to Call Home", a track that ends on a brief, yet lovely, coda wavering from the keys of an organ... a warmer, softer sound I couldn't imagine.

Montreal's All Girl Band: Pony Up

With all the bands coming out of, or making their home in, Montreal lately (arcade fire and wolf parade for example), you might have missed the promising all-girl band, Pony Up. Touted by Ben Lee as a favourite of his, he put his money where his mouth is by signing the band to his fledgling indie imprint, Ten Fingers Records. Also found on American indie label, Dim Mak, where the fivesome (Lisa Smith: Bass/vocals, Lindsay Wills: Drums/vocals, Laura Wills: Keyboards/vocals, Sara Moundroukas: Guitar/vocals, Camille Ingr: everything else/vocals) released their debut, a self-titled 7 track ep, late January 2005.

These women seem the kind who would not back down from a challenge--they say what's on their minds, kisses -- or what's in their jeans, cream. They play close to straight up indie-pop with a moody edge, one created by the music and/or the lyrics. These girls are taking control and letting you know it at the same time.

Bee and Flower

It's no surprise that I found Bee and Flower on the Devastations myspace page. As soon as I heard Dana Schechter's voice I wanted to hear her sing with the Devs' Conrad Standish. She has a smoky husky timbre that lends itself so well to the minor key sorrow that she and the band offer the listener. And in fact, Bee and Flower do their pollinating in Berlin, Germany, where Devastations are also based, so there must be something in the water, or the air, or the wine, that provokes, or attracts, those with musical gifts and an affinity for the darker side of things. This is lovely music, not 'sunshine streaming through the open window while the white lace curtains flutter' music, this is more along the lines of 'the moon is beaming through the cracked windowpane while velvet curtains frame the glass... glass smeared with red, red lipstick'.

Below you'll find a generous offering of the band's music found as mp3s on their website, and on their myspace is another mp3 of a track called "Twin Stars".

The band's pedigree is impressive, as noted on it's myspace page:

DANA SCHECHTER: Vocals, Bass (Keren Ann, Angels of Light, Bertrand Burgalat)
RODERICK MILLER: Keyboards (April March, Pulver, Richard Ruin)
TOBY DAMMIT: Percussion (Iggy Pop, Stephan Eicher, Keren Ann, Swans)
JONI HEINE: Bass, Guitar (the Durgas, Undersink Organizer)

Devastations Continue Tour, Apologize to Toronto

When the band Devastations couldn't make it to their Toronto date due to circumstances beyond their control, the band's singer, Conrad Standish, felt compelled to explain and apologize to expectant Toronto fans. Here's what Mr Standish wrote:

hey there,

conrad from devastations here. basically just wanted to say how sorry we are that we now don't have the chance to play your fair city. unfortunately this was totally out of our hands. one of the headliners on this tour pulled out very unexpectedly after only two shows, leaving us all high and dry. this then threw the rest of the tour into question, thus, the gig was cancelled at the 11th hour.

we are obviously disappointed that this happened, and will endeavor to make it back to toronto as soon as humanly possible. there really was nothing that we could have done about this, nor could we have foreseen this happening.

again we will make it up to you next time in toronto, and we will be open to
playing requests. maybe.

with love,
conrad, tom, hugo and nigel
devs xx

Now, on behalf of Toronto, I accept their apology... and please come back soon, guys.

Viarosa

Viarosa, a British band, make good use of leader Richard Neuberg's voice, a rich instrument that never strays into excess. In fact its restraint displays Viarosa's obvious axiom (obvious to me) that the music comes first. The stretched out ache of Josh Hillman's violin (Hillman is also a member of Willard Grant Conspiracy) adds a bittersweet edge to the songs, like honey squeezed from a lemon. There's a vague Nick Cave vibe here, in that the music can deliver an odd mix of internal ache and external vastness, like sorrow haunting from the past, or from across the unforgiving ocean.

Viarosa, together for just over six years, will see their debut full length, Where The Killers Run, re-released on November 20th in the UK and across Europe. There are plans for the new record, Righteous Path, to be unveiled next year. You can stream four tracks from that upcoming record, Righteous Path, at one of their two myspace pages -- try this one for the new stuff and here's the other myspace page.

I like a term I found on a PR firm's site describing the band's sound as 'country noir'. That doesn't come close to capturing the band, but I like that term, it reminds me of Jim White. See for yourself through the mp3s offered below. This is beautiful music which melds elements of indie rock, celtic, and alt-country music... or, I could just say, this is major talent working in a minor key.

The band will be touring the UK later this month, check the dates here.

Barzin: My Life In Rooms

Funny, but I've known of Barzin for over two years, I think, and I'm pretty sure I haven't done a post on him, as of yet. He continually skips just below my radar, but that's not difficult to do... seeing how my radar is dusty and outdated... his latest creative effort is titled My Life In Rooms, a collection of songs which hits you like shadows, and yet somehow dazzles with the light casting those very same shadows. The opening track, "Driving My Car", ripples and shimmers like slate blue water under golden sunlight. A lovely song that curls up against you like campfire smoke, etching itself in your clothes and hair. This description befits much of Barzin's music, music he has been writing over a span of 11 years on two albums, 2003's self-titled debut (Where Are My Records) and this year's My Life In Rooms (Weewerk - CAN and Monotreme - UK). Barzin is a fellow Canadian and often enlists the talents of another Canuck, Great Lake Swimmers, Tony Dekker, to help out--this should make perfect sense to those who know the music of the Great Lake Swimmers. The supernatural creak of the pedal steel and the cool tension of the piano are both familiar parts of Barzin's music and that of the Great Lake Swimmers. Here are some sounds from Barzin's latest and his 2003 debut on Where Are My Records.
